I am an Army Combatives Master Trainer…just wanted to explain in a bit more detail the way the courses are broken down. The Basic Combatives Course (BCC) is 5 days (40 hrs) and covers all the basic techniques discussed. The Tactical Combatives Course (TCC) is 10 days (80 hrs) and refreshes on the BCC techniques and then covers all the intermediate techniques discussed. The Master Trainer Course is 20 days (160 hrs), where you actually spend a month at FT Benning, GA and covers all the BCC and TCC techniques. The CMTC also has more of an emphasis on teaching and running a program and doing all the administrative stuff that goes along with conducting a course to certify both BCC and TCC trainers and running tournaments.

This is one of the best, no bs, discussions about martial art/ self defense training I've ever heard. Even the goofy stuff like horsing around and escalation between bros. Objective, fair, open minded, but also critical and skeptical. Very informed. I've been training since the 80's. The Arts are a wasteland of bad ideas, ego and quackery - this discussion has NONE of that. This podcast is amazing. Keeping it real. Thank you!

Hey Jocko! Great podcast as always! I would love to you see you discuss MCMAP and it’s philosophy, techniques, and it’s short comings. As a former practitioner of it, I believe the biggest issue with it is a total lack of sparring. We used to just learn enough to take a test and then wouldn’t practice anymore. We would grapple but it was mainly just backyard mud wrestling with no technique. MCMAP wasn’t taken seriously by many Marines or their commands and the joke was and probably still is that MCMAP teaches you enough to get your ass kicked and you can’t rely on it. I did MCMAP back in 2009-2010 so idk if there has been a change to training but I certainly hope there has been. Thanks again

18:25 - I think what it’s trying to say is that with “Combative training” the main goal is to focus on combat and actually producing better combative results. When it comes to other forms of “Martial Arts” not every person who trains is necessarily training to be a better fighter or to be able to combat more effectively, there are some people who do it simply for health benefits or a more spiritual outlook, not to say that they may not also consider the combative benefits but moreover that the handbook was specifically designed to address the goal of producing better combative results from users and that being it’s main or ONLY goal. Cheers Jocko, Echo.

Ah yes, MILES gear! I remember doing a “training evolution” with that stuff back in like 87 maybe? Anyway, my platoon was given the chance to be the “defenders” first and, even though my mos was 0331, I had also turned down the chance to go to sniper school (because as soon as I heard I had to go to jump school FIRST, I passed, due to my extreme fear of heights.) Yeah, I figured being a grunt meant I would be ALWAYS on the ground, no helos, no C130s, yes, I regret that decision these 35+ years later) So I HAD won high series shooter at PI, shot a 243 on “pre qual” day, and then a friggin 239 on THE day. Anyway, I had my marksmanship instructor, who was an ENORMOUS Samoan marine, placing bets with other instructors that I was gonna take high shooter. (I did, but he still lost a case of beer I think because I had been shooting “high expert” all week, high 230’s and one or 2 240s, up till I choked on Qual Day, and he’d bet another coach I would shoot over a 240 and I came in 1 point shy. I still was awarded the Leatherneck Marksmanship Award and was meritoriously promoted to PFC and was a “co-honor man” on graduation day. (I stood out front with the actual honor man and another guy from my platoon who was the series high PFT dude. We were both in our dress greens while the honor man wore his dress blues.) lol My coach was an amazing marine and all around great dude and he’d been in my corner the whole time. Damn, sorry I went off on THAT tangent. I’m old. I do that shit now. Just ask my kids! 🥱🤐. Anyway, the weapons platoon I was attached to, promptly handed my M-60 to another guy and yelled “Where’s my other DM!?” He let me and Corporal Chitwood go find a forward position(essentially an OP/LP) a few hundred yards from the rest of the platoon and we found an abandoned hunting cabin that was still standing “mostly” upright, and we waited for several hours before we could hear the “attackers” who were still at least 6 or 7 hundred yards off, and radioed back that they were headed in. I had all my laser crap attached to my M16A1 (yes, an A1 and it was the only one left in Hotel Co. I don’t know if they gave that to me on purpose or not but I had it. It meant nothing to me that it was capable of full auto, except for the occasional “We have to get rid of all this old ammo” days and then it was fun to empty my mag out in like 4 seconds. We 2 designated marksmen finally got a visual on the “enemy” approaching and the FIRST thing I saw was their radioman and his 10 foot long “whip antenna” probably 450 yards off. I asked my companion if he wanted to take the shot-remember, he was an E-4 and I was only an E-3-and he said “Can you hit him?” I said I could so I braced my rifle against the side of the broken out window frame, took a deep breath and released most of it, and gently squeezed the trigger. My “blank” round shattered the long hours of silence and we both watched the radioman start flailing around himself, looking for the source of the beeping or squealing coming off his body. We couldn’t actually hear it from how far away he was. He sat down and was a “confirmed kill.” Lol. The other platoon opened up on us but, since these new-fangled lasers couldn’t penetrate the “concealment” of a couple inches of wood, Chitwood and I kept picking these guys off like ducks in a shooting gallery. Chitwood was finally hit and we were both nearly out of blanks, so he slid me his last magazine and I got maybe 6 or 7 more “kills” before someone just thrust their M16 into the doorway to the cabin and “sprayed and prayed” and took me out. Perhaps an hour later as the opposing officers were breaking the “battle” down, the opposing platoon’s captain asked “Who were the two little fu-rs in that “Shack of Death!?” Both of us raised our hands and he said “You 2 shites killed almost 65% of my entire platoon!!” Everyone laughed except the captain so the laughter died down pretty quickly. The two of us remained silent until he said “Which of you dipsheets shot my radioman!??” I raised my hand and he just said “Good shot. Immediately took out my source of communication.” Then shook his head and walked away. We both knew that if that had been ACTUAL combat, our little “shack of death,” would have been blown to smithereens by a mortar or an M72 LAWS rocket, or even a heavier machine gun-like my M-60 Echo 3. Still lot’s of fun for a couple 20 year old kids who had grown-up hunting the woods for squirrels and deer, etc…back when the only video game I knew existed was Pong, in our local bowling alley. I know by 87 there were new video games and even “home video stuff, I actually paid nearly 1100 bucks for a Sony Betamax VCR! I still had never seen anything like this MILES gear, and never did again for reasons no one told me. (Perhaps because it was so limited in its capacity to come anywhere CLOSE to simulating actual combat?”) Sure! This sheet of drywall is PERFECT COVER! Lmao. The 1980s were definitely interesting! 😂👍Semper Fi!

I'm a struggling army veteran, and I've recently found myself struggling with PTSD again. This happened to me before, and I didn't reach out, and ask for help because I was to dang prideful to burden others. I dug my own hole without anyone's help, so why should ask them to throw me a rope. "Pride cometh before the fall." Pride is the deadliest sin, and that's not an opinion, it's a fact. It's not just a faith based belief, and I learned that the hard way. I became malnourished, sick, homeless, jobless, and I completely lost myself for a few years. I don't know who the person I became was, but I know who the person I became wasn't, and that's me. During that time, I'd lost my faith in Jesus, I abused alcohol, and almost drank myself to death. I avoided human contact, I was dishonest, and hid things from people who loved, and cared about me. I was fully consumed by hate, paranoia, sadness, self pity, and self hatred. When it was at it's worse, I was so far gone that I believed, the world would be a little better off without me, and I felt pathetic for not having the nerve to make it happen. Nothing about who I became, is in any way, who I was before, and who I am now. My Dad, my Mamaw, and my Papaw found me, and pulled me out of the mud. They saved my life. They got me back in a home, helped me find work, and got me to see a therapist. I still struggled for a long time. The doctors tried just about everything. Medication, breathing techniques, meditation, physical exercise, yoga, and even hypnosis. In the end, I learned that, medication made me worse because, I'm not mentally Ill, I'm mentally damaged, I'm mentally injured, and I eventually learned, a healthy brain should be traumatized after experiencing war, and it's those who come home without PTSD, who are mentally Ill. Just leaning that helped me feel better, but I wasn't 100% until I found purpose. I needed to do something that I cared about, and I needed to do something that I knew, provided value to others. The people who saved me before aren't around to save me now, and they made me promise, if I ever find myself in a situation I can't get out of without help, that I would bury my pride, and ask for help nomater how humiliating it was. I am in bad financial situation, and don't have much time. I owe 3 car payments that total around $1000, my registration is expired, and that's around $300, I'm a door dasher, so If my car gets repossessed, I'm gonna really be in trouble. I'm almost 2 months behind on rent for a total of around $1700. If I get evicted. I have absolutely nowhere to go, and I really don't have much to eat, but I'm so used to it, I don't really feel hungry anymore. I've managed to fight the anxiety enough to finally get myself up, and out, but now I feel the walls closing in on me, and that's making it pretty difficult to maintain. As far as charitable organizations go, in my experience, no matter how many qualifying factors I've met, not a single one has ever provided me any assistance. The only thing they've ever done with me, is take my donations. Besides, I'm not going to wait around like a goon waiting for some organization to do all of the work, marketing, and collecting donations from people to maybe help me out. Most of the money they received has to go towards maintaining the organization anyways. I'll market myself, and 100% of whatever anyone who donates will go directly to the cause. I have a venmo account, and debit card for that account. The hard part is getting enough people to see this. I made a video, and posted it on KZbin, so people can see who they're helping. It's a terrible video, and I stuttered nervously through the whole thing, but I still did it. Please, if you can, anything is better than nothing, and if you can't, or don't want to. Just passing this along for others to see would help out tremendously. My venmo username, a link to the video I made are down below. Thank's to all who took the time to read this, and God bless y'all.
