One of my favourite sayings is "it's okay to do something wrong, as long as you know that it's wrong and why it's wrong". Doctrine is a best practice, leaders can build a culture where when we break a rule we assess the risks being taken by doing so. It's about taking a disciplined approach to risk.

Culture is an area I work in. Culture is how people are expected to behave. They get those messages explicitly and implicitly. They are told, and they observe. That’s where organizations go wrong … they have nice sounding values on the wall … but they way they actually do things doesn’t reinforce that message. For instance organizations say they want innovation. BUT people aren’t clear on what they’re trying to accomplish, they aren’t included in decisions, good work goes unrecognized but mistakes are punished, they don’t have autonomy in their roles, leaders aren’t open to ideas anyway. So the message they actually receive isn’t to innovative… it’s to keep your head down and just do what you’re told. Whatever behaviors you want to encourage - you have to make sure you don’t just say it but actually reinforce it through ‘how we do things around here’.

Wrong. Jocko literally goes in detail on what you explain and says the same sentiment, that culture is not rules on paper but what has already developed organically from the bottom up. You must have gotten triggered and made this comment to project before listening the whole way through. Know there's a difference between good and bad leaders. How does complaining benefit you? Is your situation better after complaining? No one here works for your company. As Jocko said, lead up the chain of command, consider what appeals to them.

From Proud Beginnings Warrant Officers, Chief Warrant Officers, and Limited Duty Officers are Specialized Officers. Their specialty is achieved through technical experience. Specialized Officers are as old as navies themselves. Long before the seagoing rank of Captain or Lieutenant, it was the Warrant Officer that commanded ships. In the 1200s, the first to command ships had the title of Boatswain and were appointed by Warrant. Boatswain is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word “Batsuen,” meaning boat’s swain (ship’s husband). As ships and naval combat became more complex, the creation of Sailing-Master, the ship’s pilot and tactician, was appointed via Warrant. The titles of Sailing-Master and Master are synonymous. The Master succeeded the Boatswain in command and the Boatswain became the Second Officer. The Boatswain and the Master were, without question, the first true Officers of the Navy. In the 1500s, larger ships were built and they sailed far away to foreign countries. Royalty placed a Commissioned Army Officer, Captain, in command to act on behalf of the state. These Commissioned Army Officers would later become Navy Officers and the title of Captain became synonymous with Commanding Officer. The title of Lieutenant was given to the person that commands as a “tenant in lieu” of the Captain. The Captain and their Lieutenants continued to employ Specialized Officers to assist with managing programs and seamen. As Navies developed, other Specialized Officers would be added and the community expanded.

I worked for a construction company that worked mainly on really large projects. High rises, army base projects, parking garages, DOE projects. It's mainly concrete, structural steel. Everything is big and heavy. You wear 50lb of safety gear, tools, harness etc and shifts are at least 6 10hr days or 7 days a week. I was on a job that was running behind so they put the hardest most productive guys on one crew then split the rest into other crews. We were the "A" team and you can guess what they named the rest. Long story short we smoked these guys in production. I think the idea was to create competition.

You’ve studied the fighting arts, typically a knightly or sword style, in order to win duels for profit. You champion moneyed folk who wish to settle affairs of honor with blood - just not theirs. You’re adept at remaining cool enough to strike not necessarily first but best. Dueling attracts hot-heads, may be illegal, and often leaves corpses behind, so you must stay on the road to avoid those who would seek glory, vengeance, or justice at your expense.

Lemme preface by saying I'm not military. From all the stories I have heard, it seems like seal/buds training cheating is discouraged heavily when it's about doing your part and putting out physically. But cheating seemed to be somewhat encouraged at least a little if it was about getting around bureaucratic rules. That is to say, to get more sleep, more or better food, to go out and get back before inspection or accountability role calls etc. I think the point of that is just how Jocko said. How can we complete the mission.....but you have to be physically and mentally on top of your game to do so. Figuring away around obstacles is good. Not doing your part for the team is bad.

Milo of Croton (6th Century B.C.) Milo was born in the 6th century B.C. in the Greek colony of Croton, in southern Italy. A prodigiously strong wrestler, he rose to prominence at the 60th Olympic Games (540 B.C.). He won at least 32 major wrestling contests - including six Olympic crowns - over a career spanning more than two decades. His attempt to win a seventh crown failed when his younger opponent (also from Croton) made it a contest of endurance and refused to close with the more powerful Milo. Despite his age, his rivals still feared his massive strength! Milo was famously strong and large - it’s said that he car- ried a bull calf around on his shoulders daily to strengthen his muscles, finally eating the bull when it reached adulthood four years later. Due to this feat, some credit him as the father of progressive resistance exercise. Milo also performed feats of strength and balance. He challenged people to move him from a precarious perch atop an oiled discus, or to bend his fingers or arm, and could burst a band stretched around his temples by inhaling. Legend has it that Milo himself carried and placed the great bronze statue dedicated to his Olympic victories. Detractors made Milo out to be a buffoon, a glutton, and a man who thought with his muscles. He wasn’t simply a wrestler, though - some sources claim that he was a disciple of Pythagoras (and once saved his life by holding up a falling roof), a man of political influence, and a brave warrior respected by his fellow soldiers. According to legend, he died of hubris: finding a partially split tree stump held open by wedges, he tried to tear it apart with sheer strength but the wedges fell out and his hands were trapped. Helpless, he was devoured by wild beasts. This legendary death features prominently in the many statues and paintings immortalizing Milo.

The corporate world isn't the SEAL teams. Unless you have a direct stake in the company, such as stocks, you're crazy to sleep at work.
