I never had a gym or anything like that I could only workout at school. So I’d fill the laundry detergent bottles up with water when empty. Have those for my curls till failure then I’d find the heaviest crap my book bag could handle then got into form for squats till almost failure. Weighted lunges for a bit after that id end it off with about 30mins to an hour of cardio.

This video made me start rucking and it single handedly changed my overall fitness. I was overweight. I had strength as my primary training was powerlifting, but zero conditioning. I was too out of shape to run consistently, but consistent walking wasn’t intense enough. I needed something in between. I saw this video, strapped a heavy ass pack on, at moved at a steady pace for much longer than I could have run, and got an insane workout. My unweighted run times have improved and I still have muscle size and strength. Thank you for the inspiration.

There is an optimal weight for rucking that is actually good for your spine. The 100+ lbs you carried in the military is NOT optimal. For most grown men it's about 45-50 lbs. It's enough to suck and be good for you

I use rucking to train for ultras and it complements my training. Preps my feet for the many km's of pounding and its soul crushing which is what happens while on the trail when everything hurts and I start feeling sorry for myself. I don't run to get faster. I do 2 ultras a year between 50-100 km and the purpose is to strengthen my mind. I loved the military because it taught me to never give up and in the moment life may suck, but there's always an end.

For anyone who doesn’t ruck… the fact he has his weight that low is insane. In the military they teach you to put the heaviest items as high as possible, like up by your traps if possible. I'm a retired Army guy. I am 49 and dug out my old OD green ruck, packed it and went out for ruck. I stay in shape but haven't rucked in years! It was like a long-lost friend and buddy it felt so good. Heaving it up over my head and strapping it on. I rucked in the morning down the sidewalks in town, rush hour traffic and school buses going by, I went for a full hour. A dump truck driver honked his horn at me in approval. I am going to make a regular routine. But the memories flowed through my mind and great feeling afterwards.

This is the difference between the Navy Seals and the British SAS. The SAS stopped using dead weight in the rucksack years ago as the weight needs to be useable so if there’s an emergency or problem you’re carrying the kit to deal with it. Also you learn how to deal with awkward shaped kit and how to pack it so you’re balanced and less likely to suffer injury. Even if you don’t want to mess around packing tents and sleeping bags carry water, food and a first aid kit as a minimum.

What is that ruck set up called? every ruck sack I've had has ripped into pieces when I stick weight in it. Or the straps and buckles give out or continue to loosen.

That's the eberlestock f1 mainframe pack, it's designed for hunters packing out meat, so it'll easily carry a hundred pounds or more no problem

Jocko talking about rucking and read8ng Marcus Desuax writings about the legs of a soldier helped get me into ruck running. I'm 5'7" 150lbs. Still rucking with 35-45lbs 8-12 miles at 8-12min/per mile pace. Preparing for appilacian trail run. Goal is to get up to 40lbs pack traversing 30-50 miles per day alone. Or with dog. Self-supported, for 2 weeks.

I have been rocking for just over 2 weeks now for just under an hour every day. The results are incredible, however I do recommend using a weighter vest were the weight is distributed across the front and back of the upper body rather than using a backpack.
