It’s interesting. This made me think immediately of Ben Roberts-Smith, a former Australian SAS operator who won the Victoria Cross and is Australia’s most decorated soldier (and who is also embroiled in accusations of war crimes but that’s by the by). He is 2.02cm tall or 6’7. He is still an absolute unit now but by all accounts he was similarly large while in the service. Obviously SASR is not a direct comparison to SEALs in terms of how they operated, but it still gives a sense that every so often these freaks of nature kind of defy all precedent when it comes to the physical requirements for the job. Years ago he came to school as part of our ANZAC Day commemorations and I distinctly remember thinking “that is the largest person and the widest shoulders I have ever seen”

And I was amazed at how the big guys always had more problems than the smaller guys. Hand problems, knee problem, back problems. That mass puts a strain on things I think. I saw way more big guys with hands that looked like they could crush your skull, getting carpal tunnel surgery than I did the average size guys. I'm not saying this necessarily would cross over to military operations, but I wonder, since both are very physically demanding. I wonder if there is a size that balances out strength vs mobility.

I'm guessing he was lighter during his initial training on the way to earning his trident. After my service I went through college, got into lifting and eating a lot, taking supplements but never juiced. After building muscle and bulking up between 21 and 25 in college, it was like a totally different person looking at the old photos. I'd be interested to learn how "J" looks a couple decades after serving. At one point I ended up at 345# before I decided it was time to cut the extra chubby stuff.

Similar experience here man. Marine 1371 2009-2014 here 2 deployments OEF. 6'3" 186# at beginning of recruit training. Biggest I got was 246# in college after I got out. Couldn't imagine being 300# plus under a ruck. Beat tf out of my knees when I was around 225# as it was. My father is 6'9" 295# I'm glad I stopped at the size I did.

Hazing : For men who can't grow up. A friend had to suffer it in the French Foreign Legion. He said that hazing just drove resentment ( obv ) and he said that the sense of "team" broke down to the degree that some of the recruits thought that if push came to shove in a life/ death situation, they would not put themselves on the line for a someone who had hazed them. It's just sociopathic, narcissistic, immature nonsense and there is nothing "bad ass" about it.
@mightymikethebear3 жыл бұрын
I never had time for hazing. I am an Army vet. I have been hazed in the past and all it did was piss me off. Hazing did not feel more like a team member. My first two years in the Army I threw a lot of fists and feet. Knowing the people you are with will do their jobs effectively and professionally gives me a feeling of confidence and respect for the "team".

That size and weight is an advantage only if he's fighting with big axes and hammers. When was he a SEAL, 75 AD? He's slower, less agile, a bigger target, and consumes more resources, just by definition. Not to mention if he got wounded they'd have to bring in a backhoe to haul him out. Three 100-lb soldiers would be more effective than that lumbering giant any day. Makes for good movie fodder though.

I'm sure the top tier military guys are bad ass. After all, you can't make it there without the grit and determination. I do feel that the everyday military member, the core of the force is leaning further and further away from that kind of person. It's scary.

Still don't get how beating the shit of new guys helps or teaches anyone anything lol I guess it may weed out some of the ego from thinking your already a seal but I imagine most of these guys post training are already super respectful and dialled in on what their role is as a newbie. Guess there is always a few personalities that get through who aren't meant to be seals aswell
@johnleong40963 жыл бұрын
Helps with integration into the Teams I suppose. If everyone before you had gotten hazed while they were newbies, then it just feels like a rite of passage that helps build stronger connections to the guys who’ve been in your shoes. Aside from that, it also could be used as a way of testing how you react to stuff, and giving your new Team a good look at the stuff you’re made of.
