Hi Jocko & Echo, i just want to say thank you for this episode, i did initially write a whole paragraph on it, however i think a simple thanks will suffice, but i will say that you guys are doing a grand job & your advice has been really constructive, the way you suggested how to tackle the ego in the work place was brilliant, life is easy it's people that make it harder, so i appreciate your advise in this grand world of chess playing. Again thanks guys & looking forward to the next episode.

FIRST 5 MINS (give or take). When I was working as a mudman on drilling rigs, you could tell the rigs that wanted to keep working. Each crew would try to one up the other crew and achieve more than the other. The drilling rigs that were doomed to fail and lose contracts were the ones that would fight each other, and their crews would be always leaving something for the other person to pick up.

Lived a lie of a life for ever to feel better about my pathetic nature/lifestyle etc. It was a rough set of years to tell myself the truth more and more to have a honest perspective on where I was in life, very depressing etc. Was worth the pain because I know I am a honest person now.

At 35 minutes in, about the young lady at high school and bullying, the fact that she is at one of your seminars or gatherings speaks volumes to me, to have the notion to attend shows that she is way ahead of the rest and i take my hat of to her and i would like to say that school is just a moment in your journey that will pass just like when you run up a hill, once done it's done

So, I started going to the gym 4-5 days per week. I think this is end of week 4. Well yesterday I was stricken with strep throat; tonsils the size of golfballs, sore and throbbing. I was really excited to do arm day today, but I am convinced that my body needs rest. My level of ownership here is playing the game where my body has made an executive decision. I can't go run, and I can't do the arm exercises I had planned. I cant go to the gym and risk infecting others, but I can psych myself up for the day I am able to resume exercise. I can feed my body good, hearty, healthy foods. I can absorb useful, wholesome information and keep my brain as sharp as possible. I can plan for the week ahead and develop a strategy to mitigate the risk of getting sick or injured when I can get back to work. I'm subordinating my ego and giving my body the time it needs to heal, instead of worrying about the gains I'm missing. The dumbbells will still be there when I return, and I'll be in a better vantage point to make those gains. Right now, my immune system is getting some, and next week, my body is gonna get some.

Be on time and washed up fresh (since I do live a slightly different lifestyle by running to work i need time to perhaps rinse my face) I get that. Something which I must plan for and show up earlier. But there seems to be within my perceptual understanding an authority struggle, that is just within my reach when I go to increase my mental toughness by using "Infantry" self talk and remembering being courteous, yet the moment I go to perform slightly better, by washing at the beginning of my shift, dishes which are not yet washed but could use a fresh start, the authority struggle begins. It was not with the intention of outperforming, but rather going "Infantry" on the front line of food safety WITH my team, yet the assessment is that "I am too worked up, I have too much "energy" which at least was an answer to what I must think about. I do want to fix it and have it not be a power struggle, but rather a "hell yeah" response, which maybe I am shooting for the stars on that, but you get the point.

There’s such a delay between being able to listen to it on the Jockopodcast website and KZbin. I listened ta 2/3rds a this two days ago. I spent like 23 minutes earlier trying to find the vid thinking of course it’s out on KZbin somewhere, why wouldn’t it be out? Echo doesn’t lag that hard, but alas... anyway it’s out. Finally. Mr. Echo. Thank you

Slapjack, also known as Slaps, is a simple standard-deck card game, generally played among children. It can often be a child's first introduction to playing cards. The game is a cross between Beggar-My-Neighbour and Egyptian Ratscrew and is also sometimes known as Heart Attack. *Wikipedia*

Ahhhh STA-21. I was an alternate on my first 2 packages. My third was pure gold, the best I could’ve asked for, topped off with recommendations from the MARFORPAC Commander and Surgeon. Submitted it and wouldn’t you know, during Obama-Era sequestration they abolished the Medical Corp (Doctor) option. Man I was crushed. But happy it didn’t happen, wouldn’t be where I am today.

I've said it before but I'll keep saying it. Guys, it would be great if you brought David Goggins on the podcast. We would all go nuts! I suspect there is some tension between Goggins and some of Jocko's old Team guys but there is much common ground in discipline, overcoming issues and getting after it overall! Either way though, no factor!

Blackjack or sap are the most common terms for the impact tool in question. Slapjack I don't know, might be another common name for it among some people also. Laws on possession and use vary depending on the state--everything is illegal in California, which is one huge reason I don't live there.

I'm getting more and more of a sense that "ego" in these examples means false, shallow pride. As opposed to the pride you get from truly being the best at something. I don;t get that. Don't people get bored not being challenged? Isn't boredom worse than breaking a sweat? Plus working hard together is a positive way of building workplace relationships.

Regarding the fellow who is working extra hard to get ahead: he has taken his eye off service and became self serving. When dedicated to the goal of keeping people safe, and doing it to the best of one’s ability all the energy of the universe is at his disposal. When serving self, it’s serving man (EGO) instead of GOD . It becomes hard work rather than pure joy and honour.

Ok, real question: How do I appeal to ego in such a way as to get people to do what's best long term even tho they might be sacrificing an ego trip in the short term? For example: trophy hunting. One way to go on an ego trip is to just shoot everything big and awesome insight, BUT that means the population will decline and become weak, small and sickly in the long term which will result in: no more trophies. BUT if you focus on long term, and shoot the smaller, weaker ones instead: the species will get more and more awesome. Thus you hunts could very well go back to being the stuff of songs and legends ;). When I talk about this with people one on one almost everyone agrees, but how do you translate that into unanimous consent where ppl really get it and support it? And are excited about it. Rather than just thinking you're trying to take away their trophies and make their lives less interesting. Real predators get this. Human hunters are more ego driven.
