My grandfather is Sargeant major Lawrence William Smith, he has 22 years of service in the Marine corps from the 50s to the 70s under his belt. It's always good to see the Vietnam guys finally able to speak.

Wow years ago I got a letter whilst abroad, explaining that my grandfather had passed after being identified. We were then told the funeral was covered for his service in Vietnam during the Vietnam war. We were under the impression he was in the air force, I believe that's what he'd say. Years had passed before we were then told he had served in Cambodia and were sent a document of awards and citations. We didn't know he was MACSOG infact we didn't even know it existed. We have family friend same experience. Colonel William Bill Rhodes Green Beret served 1963-1970 started on 12 men recon, late MacV-Sog. Many missions in Cambodia & Los. But he couldn't speak of it. So his family and us never knew until some 30 years later.

Absolutely amazing gentleman ,leaders, warriors ,and human beings . I have been so massively depressed etcfor over 20 years. Went through phase 1 in April/may ‘69. I remember SFC Torrez, his nickname was “terrible torrez”. A friend of mine on another E&E team was caught crossing st mereglis dz by torrez. He made the whole team lowcrawl across the dz with packs and weapons. They all had raw skinless elbows and knees when they got to the other end of the dz. rumor was that torrez trained and possibly took part in getting Che in Bolivia. Torrez was hard as a hickory knot. I became SF medic.

My recollection dealing w/the Chinooks hook and its charging during flight was to ask the pilot to discharge the build-up of static electricity. Never had or knew of such an incident as a Pathfinder.

57 minutes in, this guys rattling off names and unit numbers and ranks of people he's dealt with over 50 years, then he can't remember the name of a luitenant colonel and says "I'm terrible with names"!? Interesting. In 2005 I was a DoD Civilian monitoring the performance of KBR at Camp Arifjan, Camp Victory and the Geen Zone. Camp Victory had the best DFAC. General Order No. 1 said “no alcohol” for the military so we went over to the State Dept side of the house to drink. Good memories,

I grew up with his son. When you Google him it gives links to the story about how he got the medal for what he did in Vietnam for macvsog. He was just awarded I think a silver star in the early 2000s. It was when they gave medals to the guys from sog. I just thought I'd throw that out there for anyone interested. You gotta get with Jack Carr and Antoine Fuqua.....this is a project I would pay to watch. These SOG Stories are amazing without any embellishment. Perhaps they aren't feature length worthy.....but mostly what we get are B.S. America hating Vietnam stories. These men are in their twilight, and for decades were not allowed to share these stories. My uncle served at an A camp up north, he only talks about the war when he wants to share something funny that happened, "Fang" the camp dog, shooting rats in their tents with wax plugs in a 1911....the pics of the poor monkey they captured and tired to shave. Point is, these stories are IMPORATANT, the funny ones, the brutal ones, the heart wrenching ones, the absolutely valorous ones where men went on these brighlight insertions and didn't come home. Im also interested in the strories from our enemy, men with loved ones who were told to go and defend their country ....as they saw it. The story where Hal Moore met his oposing commander decades later is amazing or the guy in one of your SOG casts who said he was shot 3 times by one of our troops in an LZ....

Marcus, you mention a William Davis. We had a SGT Davis transfer into B Co 3/8th 4th Div in Dec 68. It was said that he came from SF. Carried an NVA pack instead of the standard pack all us 11b carried, and he traveled light. Had his S**t together. Always wondered what happened to him. Bill B Co 3/8 4th Inf Div 68-69
