My Grandfather was there. As I understand it, he was part of the frogmen who reconned the beach over the days before the D-day landing. When some were critical of how hard he and his team worked he said "that's their right". He died at 93 with a silver star for his work around d-day and he will always be a hero to me. Commander John Allen RIP.

CITATION: The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Ensign (CEC) John C. Allen (NSN: 0-282188), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action during the assault on France on 8 June 1944. Ensign Allen was Officer-in-Charge of a Naval Combat Demolition Unit which was assigned the hazardous and difficult job of blowing a fifty yard gap in enemy beach obstacles. When enemy gunfire dispersed and wiped out members of his and adjoining units, Ensign Allen directed the reorganization of remnants of the other units and proceeded to clear gaps in spite of intense enemy gunfire and heavy loss in members and material of his unit. When his mission was finally completed, he took the responsibility of directing the clearance of adjacent areas and areas to which crews that were completely wiped out had been assigned. In carrying out his duties he exposed himself to enemy gunfire and displayed a high degree of aggressive and fearless leadership to inspire the men under him. The gallantry in action, skill and devotion to duty displayed by Ensign Allen on this occasion were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

I like how Echo and Jocko are usually coy about the last question. They say, "Do we have time for one more" "I think there's time for one more" etc. like Jocko hasn't been rehearsing it in his head just waiting for the time to come to say it. You'll even notice that he seldom looks at, or references his notes for that last question because he's so fired up about it, I love it.

Just finished Extreme Ownership. New strategy for getting after it at work and in my personal life. I recall seeing Sgt Slaughter on a documentary from years ago. His account, which he told while on the beach that had been designated Omaha beach, has stuck with me. I love the podcast, love the interaction between Jocko and Echo.

thank you Jocko. before this podcast and before you I was being strong because i wanted to be a soldier, so i tried to be strong during workouts and mentally robust in general, but i had no reason - no justification or validation and therefore no motivation; so whatever strength i had was weak and phony. Now that I've realised that discipline = freedom, and now that I've realised the actual reasons why it is worth being strong, I've had an epiphany and i have a motive to be strong other than "I want to be a royal marine and i need to be strong to do that".

Having lived in Roanoke VA as an adult for 13 years, I wasn't aware of the high Roanoke death toll from D-Day. Bedford, VA lies just east of Roanoke and is an even smaller town where 24 Bedford men lost their lives in France on D-Day. Bedford had the distinction of having the highest death toll of any US town. Bob Slaughter, the author of this book, was a driving force behind the creation of the National D-Day Memorial, located in Bedford. President George W. Bush dedicated the memorial on it's opening day of June 6, 2001. Bob Slaughter was hero till the end.

Sad part is the German soldier who was being interrogated and gave only his name and number, likely only said that because it was the only English he spoke. Most of the Wehrmacht soldiers on the Atlantic wall during D-Day were Czech conscripts. Germans have always spoken decent English, in those days the Czechs didnt.

I went to tech school with a guy who was intimately familiar with hedges. He told me that when you assaulted a hedge with a chainsaw, literally sparks would fly as if one was cutting steel. I can't even begin to imagine fighting through hundreds and hundreds of meters of the crap.

Amazing to consider that you could be fighting the Nazi ideology in a World War but when you get up in the enemy's face, he's just a young guy born somewhere different who is cut from the same cloth.... No one wants to kill each other, the two guys on opposing sides might've been great friends if circumstances were different...makes you think about why war is fought ...makes you respect even the Nazi soldiers who weren't necessarily evil as we think .....but it seems there is no parallel to modern war against radical terrorists, who don't wear a uniform and respect life even on their own side....crazy times...crazy life

Nazis were not the ordinary soldier. They were evil through and through.

DevilFrog61 some of the Wehrmacht and much of the SS were ideologically committed. Some of the ‘terrorists’ are dumb kids paid by the Taliban. And some are hardened ideologicals.

The story about the German soldier that was interregated and Jocko says the German and Japanees was brainwashed. The same goes for the Americans, dont belive otherwise.
@joecermak76497 жыл бұрын
Oldmaz the amount of brainwashing cant even compare to that of the nazis and japanese. Sure american soldiers are broken down and rebuilt but dont mistake that for the genocide of millions and the capacity for self sacrafice by the japanese. America has a lot if dark history but your comparison dilutes the sheer evil that was done.
