I always test fit pieces as I go. The rear bumper can have issues as well. Here's how I test fit the bumper on the 66 convertible.

Thanks Berry. Its awesome to get a sneak preview of some bling, and like always, i cant wait for the next video. When you finely get to the point on a project that its time to actually start putting on the chrome and dressing her up, its amazing to see it all come together. just putting on that bumper changed the whole look of the car I'm sure you agree . I'm also sure the owner appreciates the videos even more than we do. he/she has got to be getting anxious to see it complete. i would imagine it like being a kid on Christmas even waiting for the morning to come but having to wait a whole year. I COULDN'T DO IT THEN AND I SURE COULDN'T DO FOR THIS LONG!!!!. Keep up the excellent work and thanks for taking the time to bring us along for the ride. seriously i mean that. you could just as easily spend all the hours working on the car and not spend just as meany hours afterwords editing all the video just so we could see. Waiting as patiently as possible. Cliff

Very good points when making sure everything aligns before welding in those brackets Barry, I installed my new trunk floor almost a year ago as well as the new tail panel and have yet to weld in the brackets. Hopefully in the next couple months I will be in a position to install the bumper and then line up the brackets and weld in. As always, thanks for the videos

At a round 21:07... Cutting the bumper to fit. I'm working on a 1968 and to gap that bumper to the body would be days on top of the work I have done, which was welding up the bolt holes and welding the brackets to the bumper. I'm going with painted bumpers, because I thought my build would look better that way from the start. I have seen some builds where they are eliminating the bolt holes and chroming them. The front bumper by the nature of the mounting, will have studs welded to the bumper where on the rear bumper I just welded the brackets right to the bumper. At some point in time once the car is done maybe I'll build a bumper for the car if something happens to this one, or I wind up with way too much free time. Chasing perfection is usually throwing money away unless you can appeal to that top 1% and they will pay anything to have it, or your build it for bragging rights and willing to lose time and or money.

Big Tip: Never Use a Power Tool to tighten bolts on a Bumper or Bumper brackets. (Especially a '65-'66 Mustang Bumper). You will warp the bumper, ruin the chrome (Spider it where the bolt is) or both. Only use a wrench or Socket and make it snug. That's good enough. Tony K. 1966 Sprint 200 Registry, MCA#70001.

loved watching your work truck build. I was curious if i could get your opinion on how to fix a rusted frame. if I could send you some picture and get some advice that would be great.
5 жыл бұрын
The purpose of the wave washers is to allow the bracket to flex side to side a little so that they sit flat on the tail panel when tightened down. In my case, the aftermarket brackets were so far off that I had to slot the holes in the brackets where the bumper bolts up just to get the other set of holes in the brackets to line up with the holes in the tail panel.

Nice tips, but shouldn't the bumper bracket welds penetrate through to the rear frame rails? I liked your demo on the seam sealer. I trim the brush down also when applying it. You seem to end up with a neater job than i have. I must need more practice i guess or masking tape.lol.
@JoDaddysGarage

You could, but not going to gain much. Remember, these bumpers are mostly cosmetic. I do plan on making a seam sealer video wher I tape things off.

QUESTION:: When you received the complete floor pan. Did you measure for square. I was just wondering if the unit came racked a little from Dynacorn, and thats why the passenger side was shorter and if you could have compensated for it if you had known. So that if I ever do a full frame pan like this, I would be interested in measuring to see if the rear frame rails ended at the same point.. just curious if you know.. I'm going to go look for that video now
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 5 жыл бұрын
The pan is attached to a metal frame for shipping. No evidence of any damage. I did some measurements, but I don't know that I checked for square, or if that would make much difference. These are built on a jig, and I'm sure the tolerance isn't extreme. Even being off a little, it is probably within spec of an original. I'm still satisfied with these pans, but I have heard of someone building another version and selling them. They buy individual pieces and weld them together. Not sure who though.

Barry, is there any advantage to using brushable seam sealer as opposed to seam sealer in a caulk tube? On a second note, can epoxy primer work as well as the self etching primer you used? Great job!
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 5 жыл бұрын
I like brushable for that reason, it can be brushed. I'm not against caulking types though. You could spray epoxy in gaps. it would work great.

Thanks for that lesson in fitment, I'm to that point on my 65 and after watching that I don't want to weld my brackets in place without a bumper now. Time to order one I guess. I aslo noticed the brace is different on a vert compared to a fastback or notchback ?

The reason that you are having problems with the Bumper Bolts is that you are not using the "Correct" Concours Bumper bolts. The correct '65-'66 "Concours" Carriage Bumper bolts can be bought through NPD... but it looks like you made your own fix.. Tony K. 1966 Sprint 200 Registry, MCA#70001.

Hi Barry, another great video and timely for me. Love the details on alignment and modification. This helps me to think outside the box when restoring my car. Looking forward to your next video. Curious to know how you will handle the lower rear valence. I never liked the fitment as it wraps around to the lower quarter. Will you modify it for a better fit? I will stay tuned. Gary
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 5 жыл бұрын
Gary, I already did some test fitting of the valence in a previous video. If I remember, it fit very well. I had another car I did years ago that had fitment issues. I actually sectioned the valence for a precise fit.

I live in north GA i think you have said in previous videos that you do aswell. Ive started tearing down my 1965 mustang and I'm going to be replacing panels soon. I was wondering if you source your parts from mustangsunlimited and if so would you shoot for the budget parts or the dynacorn branded (fenders, quaters, doors)? Thanks in advance! Keep up the good work!
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 5 жыл бұрын
I normally buy from MU, but they left the state. I preferred to go t their store, and hand pick my panels. As far a parts, the budget quarters and fenders are fine. Doors, i would likely use dynacorn. Stay away from goodmark stuff.

Great video. I wondered what had happened to this project car. I had to slice the horizontal flanges on my bumper brackets to get the holes to line up. I did that before I saw this video so I had to figure out what to do the hard way since I have never done any of this before. I have a situation now which I thought maybe you have some ideas on. I fitted the new rear metal on my car to go with the Maier tight tolerance rear fiberglass bumper which doesn't use the stock bumper brackets. I decided to weld them back on anyway though. Well, when I went back and test fitted my old chrome bumper, both bumper side edges are proud of the quarters by enough to be noticable. I may someday decide to go back to the chrome bumper. If I do, I would rather not have to take a chunk out of the middle, weld it back and then have it re-chromed to fit my car but then is this something people are typically having to do? I see a lot of photos of chrome bumpers on these cars and it is fairly evident that they had to make them fit because they look much better than how the Ford people originally installed them.

Unfortunately, cutting is likely the only option. I've seen other cars beyond mustangs where they cut the bumpers in various ways to make it blend with the body.

I wanted to ask where you suggest I can find a car like this, I don't mind doing some repairs which it will most likely need but I don't want to get something where I have to completely fix and redo the car.
