That's how it always goes. It's why the word has lost all meaning. Same with words like misogyny. I got called misogynist yesterday for the following statement: "The Rings of Power are a pale imitation of the Lord of the Rings movies" These days, ANY criticism of something, no matter how valid, immediately equates to that person being some sort of ist or phobe. Because of this, sadly I now think "I doubt it" when I hear someone say someone else is racist, misogynist, etc. Actually, it's even worse than that. Typically the person calling others these things over milquetoast statements are far more likely to be the racist than the person they're accusing.

They oppose bigotry in all its forms, one of their life's goals is to live in a positive way that promotes a less biased society. But they never understand the most fundamental ethics in the battle against bigotry, One, you can't blame an entire group for the actions of one member, and two, you can't condemn people for how they were born. You can judge them for their choices, but you can't judge them for their identity. Bigotry is wrong, but they act like bigotry is ok, it was just directed at the wrong people. I think most fans would actually say that Fin and Poe were the best part of TFA and most fans would have been much happier if TLJ was actually a buddy cop type film between the two but sadly fin was sent off on a random filler episode that had no bearing on the plot of the film.
@YegRonАй бұрын
@@permeus2nd And everyone seems to forget that it was Disney that took Fin’s face off the poster for the Chinese release.
@Axterix13Ай бұрын
I personally wouldn't say that about Finn. Instead, I say the opposite, that his character suffers as much from bad writing as Rey does. He's used for comic relief. And let me repeat that, the guy trained from a very young age in a very strict way where he'd have to constantly hide his feelings, where he'd be desensitized to all sorts of things, is the comic relief. His backstory doesn't fit his character, as we're expected to believe someone raised inside this harsh system is as cowardly/transparent as Finn is without it ever having been noticed. He'll know anything the plot needs him to because they used these elite, trained from a young, young age soldiers as janitors. And somehow, someway, the First Order, with its vast military complex, makes this one grunt, a guy they put on janitorial duty, a bit of a big issue. It is all so bad. But he doesn't use the Force, so he's spared from Abrams breaking the established rules so they can cram in all the fancy Force and Lightsaber stuff. Therefore, despite being written even more poorly than Rey, people overlook it. Now imagine if he'd been written as having been Phasma's aide, now doing an obligatory combat tour. It would heighten the connection and consequently the stakes between the two. It would explain why he knows things. It would provide a reason for why the First Order would make him a target. It would help explain how he managed to hide his cowardice. TLJ at least improves his character somewhat, by having him leave his puppy dog love of Rey behind and become a true hero... but this good arc for his character is done through some of the worst writing in the entire movie, and given that's TLJ, that's saying something. And then the third movie reverts him back to puppy dog love comic relief guy. And that said, not the fault of the actor. They manage to make the character pretty likeable despite the writing.
@permeus2ndАй бұрын
@@Axterix13so I’m sorry I’ve not read your full comment I’m having problems focusing at this min but I know what your saying, ied say the character of Fin needed his own film/show/book preferably the first one to set up his character and it’s defection, what little we saw in TFA just dosnt make sense it should take more than that one incident to turn him or break him or it should take longer. I usually agree with 99 percent of what you guys say and I do on this situation too EXCEPT I don't agree with the idea that someone shouldn't say anything in defense of something just because it probably won't lead to positive change. Small steps are not to be ignored, nor is the psychological boost it gives those you're trying to defend. If everyone had the mindset that saying the right thing probably won't change people's minds then we'd never progress in our society. Change for the better always begins with ideas and small actions that don't by themselves lead to direct change but over time more and more people echo the sentiments, if they agree, and it CAN lead to major changes. Just look at how African Americans or women were viewed by the majority barely 100 years ago. Women couldn't even vote until 1920. What if in 1917 someone who thought they should be allowed to vote just said, "Why bother, it won't lead to change, so why say anything." Ps I hated this show and both of these actresses were horrible lol. So what I'm talking about isn't about defending them and their warped way of deflecting criticism by calling all critics racists. I'm just stating generally that even if you don't think your idea or statement will immediately change others minds it doesn't mean you shouldn't say it still. All major movements begin small and with ideas that won't immediately lead to change.

They’re responsible for writing mediocre shows and wasting their talent. For the most part, the writing of the show is what sucks not the actors lacking talent. They convince the actors that the world is against them, but really it’s an excuse for their own shortcomings. Fans will watch your shows if they are well made. The problem is that the actors in the Acolyte were going to use that show to request more money and to get more gigs, and that’s not going to happen since the show was garbage and was canceled.

Neither her nor Stenberg really do much to dispel the notion that they are entitled and privileged, yet are seeking to use claims of racism as a shield. Both got preferentially hired for the show because of racial and gender identities and yet racial and gender identities were not at the heart of most criticism of it. But Turner-Smith herself seems to have thought that this alone justified the existence of her character and made her interesting.

Well I mean doesn't it show that Disney didn't care once they actually started to see the dwindling viewing numbers for each episode of the show? Also I think maybe they realized after Amandla dropped that stupid dis-track, early too, like it was only after the 2nd or 3rd episode, she didnt even wait until the show had finished. I don't think she had much racism thrown toward her, I think she was just simply "dogpiled" with people telling her straight, because it's funny how Jodie-Turner never shows any receipts. I think they're just twisting things here constantly, trying to completely divert away from the FACT most fans and the audience simply didn't like the show and shared their valid criticisms WHY they didn't like the Acolyte. And Disney and actors like her keep ignoring that and spin this whole narrative, that somekind of large group of the fans are RAcists. Meanwhile their acolyte show descends further and further into oblivion.

I notice that so many of these activist types fall back on appeals to authority to solve their problems rather than relying on themselves to deal with issues. Personally, I think it's the result of helicopter parenting where Mom or Dad or the teacher was always around to stop other kids from being mean to them, so they expect Disney or the government or whoever to fulfill that role, now.

Yes, she says “POCs are a large percentage of buying power” and in *the same sentence* says the “people with the money” (meaning Disney) need to put their foot down I actually support banning those few horrible tweeters from Twitter, and from Disney Plus, but she specifically asks for a “public” stance, rather than any concrete action.
@originaldarkwaterАй бұрын
@@ian-flanagan Well, they know that what they really want entails people having no privacy online and the police paying you a visit if you're mean to someone on Twitter, but that sounds terrible, so they're not going to come out and say that, assuming they've even thought ahead far enough to realize that's what they are asking for. They just want Mommy to fix it and they don't care how.

No need to over analyze these actors statements, they're deflecting from a badly performing show and shifting blame to a couple social media posts to paint all the people not watching their show with that brush. Do the HotD or Dune actors talk about this stuff, no.

You can tell me all about the elaborate headcanon you have for your story or characters, but if it isn't in what it shown, it doesn't matter. For all I know, Imperial Goon Number 658 had a complicated relationship with his father and sailed hover skiffs on the weekends with his adorable lizard-dog Scruffy, but it all I saw was him shooting at the main characters, I won't be sad if they shot back.

To be fair, hardly anyone will ever come out and say they hate a show because of its diverse cast. For many, it may be anything from an unconscious objection to an overly critical series of bad faith arguments enhanced by the fact that deep down, the person is against the diversity of what it means for media as a whole. I personally think the acolyte was a miserable series that deserves to be canceled, but I just don't want to understate the very significant group of people who are opposed for the wrong reasons and simply don't come out and say it.
@adriandenton6637Ай бұрын
Yea i've always hated Twileks, Mon Calamari and Wookies, especially the female ones. Seriously though Rey wasn't even a character, she was just a one dimensional inspirational avatar for young girls so they could play dress-up.

I believe the Acolyte was diverse “by force”, i.e. not by equal meritocracy, but deliberately favouring certain immutable characteristics which I think should have no impact on employment. If I’m proven wrong, I would apologise massively. But if I’m right, isn’t that a very valid reason to be against the Acolyte’s “diversity”? Isn’t it actually r-ist and s-ist and s--uality-ist to hire people tokenistically? I have always supported natural diversity from meritocracy, but in the last 5 years, DEI put the doubt in my mind that “positive” discrimination is always happening. If my attitude is as common as I think it is, the kind of unconscious bias you’re talking about is made *worse* the Acolyte. That’s *why* we’re so angry at it, and the pompous actresses crying wolf despite being on the positive end of discrimination.

This is just a small note, but when you guys are talking, could you try not to talk over each other. There were a number of times in this video when one person started to talk and the other person talked over the first person. It got rather annoying to listen to. As for the topic at hand, it's a difficult balance. Obviously, Star Wars wants to protect its actors, but it also wants to stay out of unnecessarily controversy and mudslinging. As Thor said, once Amanda returned fire with her video, it just fed the trolls even more. And I would agree that people should not be saying rude or racists things to the individual playing a character, but it's tough when the actor then decides to wade into the discussion after those rude things are said. Disney, then, may be more likely to stand on the sidelines and watch things blow over. At a certain point in time, it's not worth the company getting involved every time there's an internet spat with one of its actors.
