Cool video. I've had both over the years. First was a 9x12 Camel.. 70s! They told us not to touch the canvas during rain. We had a little water come in through a seam, but it wasn't bad. I've done tons of backpacking too, in typical full rainfly little tents. I'm now shopping for a "car camping" tent and probably will go with a synthetic for the reasons you suggested. Plus, a tent like the TNF Wawona 6 has a massive vestibule, but is much smaller than say a 16' canvas bell tent. Tough choices.. Longevity, yes, the synthetic ones can delaminate in a few years, ending the life of the tent. So, for dollars per year, canvas could win. Again, tough choices!

Took a kodiak canvas 12x12 cabin tent camping and it started pouring just after we rolled it out. Tent was drenched, we set it up anyway, opened the door and the inside was completely dry inside. Every one else's plastic tents were all wet inside. I'm disappointed that I never thought to switch to canvas tents years ago

I'm considering a 5m bell tent and the Kodiak 12x12. Are you enjoying the Kodiak? Would you have rather gotten a bell tent? I hope you're well.

Hi Jodi, just watched ur vid. I want to buy a good tent. Been lookin at the Whiteduck bell tents. Then there is a cheaper danchel bell tent. Do you have a good brand we can count on for high quality materials and workmanship? Honestly want to do a nomad sorta deal with my bike and trailer. But for work. Im not homeless. Just never owned a car and prob never will in north america.

This was a great video. I do Civil War era reenacting and I have ordered my first canvas tent, which is a 6x6 A frame with double doors. I liked your round Sibley tent. I’m hoping my a frame will be easy to put up by myself. I am going to rig up a clothes line in my basement to dry it if it gets wet (which I’m sure it will). If the canvas loses its waterproofing, do you have any suggested treatment to add it back? Also, a video on repairing canvas would be awesome! Thanks,

Can’t you spray on the water repellent on the canvas tents?

Hi there!! I have a question for you hopefully you see this message. My husband and I bought canvas wall tents two years ago and the bottom of them I treated for mold and stopped it but it looks stained. You cannot see it from the outside of the tent but the inside it looks dirty. Can I use a canvas paint to cover up the stains? Thank you!!
@jodimiddendorf2 жыл бұрын
Good question! Every canvas tent is a bit different. I would contact the manufacturer of your tent and see if they have advice. I have not used canvas paint before.

Does anyone have recommendations on how to air dry these after a camping trip? I live in a city and park in the street, so I don't have a backyard to lay them out. I was thinking that I could drape it over my vehicle and attach it somehow to the vehicle.

Speaking of rain and canvas, do they have to be made waterproof ish? I recently got a canvas bedroll, and it doesn’t appear to have any type of wax or visible coating on it. So I’m concerned that it won’t handle any amount of rain at all. What can you tell me about that?

If water is your concern, look into making waxed canvas

Has condensation been an issue for you? I plan on using a canvas tent and stove in Alaska as early as this spring. Great vid btw

No, it’s usually very dry with the stove running. Have fun!

picked up a 5m bell tent and it came in today, oh lordy its heavy :D any thoughts on movement methods for transporting it around? dont get much snow in the south so sled probably not as viable. really looking forward to using it though :D
@jodimiddendorf2 жыл бұрын
Yay! I’m stoked for you! As far as transport, depending on where you plan on taking the tent, a large and sturdy wagon, like heavy duty…. That would probably work well!

I have an aluminum, collapsible mini-forklift for wheeling stuff (tent) out to my campsite. Ties hold stuff on.
@RabidHotMan Жыл бұрын
@@elizabethbalise9779 i ended up picking up a collapsible aluminum dolly that came with bungie cord hooks, haven't gotten a chance to use them yet but should do the job well as long as i don't ever need to use them in bad terrain. dolly wheels aren't exactly all terrain. Ill pick up a heavy duty wagon if it comes to that :)

Why cannot canvas be cut to the dimensions of one of 2-3-person tents that you find at REI?

Hi Jodi, like the way you talk! I'm a big fan of canvas tents, using a CC 400 all season. The pro's I support! Some con's I don't. Weight: choose a fitting tent. The 400 gives ball-room space already! Saves a lot of weight even using the heavy floor. Packing the poles seperately is a good way to handle the tent. Not easy to set up on you own? See above about the size! Using the floor makes it very, very easy to pitch the tent. Even on your own! Some advise: please pitch your tent tight. on 0:09 it is so loose, looks like it lost all it's energy. Rightly pitched it looks like a castle. Please.....

So a canvass tent is definitely more of a pain to clean? (For one the drying times that you mentioned, and also because canvass is more absorbent so it seems like synthetic would be easier to wipe clean)
@jodimiddendorf2 жыл бұрын
Canvas tents will likely require more “work” in lots of ways. Cleaning, care, physically moving the heavy canvas, setup, etc.

I’m surprised that this tent was difficult for you to set up. First time, it took me a couple of hours. The second, 15-20 minutes. Easy

Most tent take 5 mins to set up. This one was much longer as you said. It’s relative.

It’s probably more healthy to not breathe in a plastic tent.
