I’m joining the Air Force due to the pressure of responsibilities at home and constantly living pay check to pay check working two jobs and still feeling broke. Don’t force yourself to do a full 20. You can get out at 4 years. I got out at 11 and haven’t looked back. It was a great experience but it is an easy way to get burnt out. Most get burnt out at 15 years. I heard they might be bringing back 15 year retirements. I would have stayed in for that.

I was stationed there in the late 1980s and volunteered for a remote Alaskan tour to escape that hellhole. That place was the worst assignment during my 20 year career mainly due to the hostile local community (including Columbia) which as whole was anti-military. I hope the situation has improved over last 30-40 years.

Yeah, I have to agree about the relationships over performance. I was looked over for awards and decorations because I did not have the relationships with SNCOs and Officers but I made sure to hit the marks for PME, Education, Volunteering and Deployments. But, it didn't matter if leadership did not recognize you as a hard worker and someone who can excel at the next rank. I also retrained from aircraft maintenance to intelligence. Intelligence seemed cool but it was difficult at the same time especially dealing with people. However, intelligence most definitely opened more doors for me and allowed me to travel for TDYs and deployments. Another great video...

Are you going to active duty air force and if so, how? And also if so, are you only given security forces as a job? We always hear that it while it may not be so impossible to go Air guard/reserve if you are prior service, it is darn near impossible to go active duty Air force and if you are able to get in, they would only allow you to be security forces. Can you elaborate a little bit on it?

I agree---wish I would have went to the doctor more often. I would often run and for no reason, ran out of breath and to stop...turns out I had ventricular tachycardia. We didnt discover this until 2 years after I retired.....its been deemed not service connected, so I have gone 20 years and 4 internal defibrillators with no disability payments.
@Jodywithawhy2 ай бұрын
Damnnnnn. That sucks man. My wife works for the VA, and she said people can get a service connection if they can find a witness who knew them while serving. You would get them to write a character letter stating they witnessed you deal with this issue while serving. If you can get a couple of these from reliable sources, there’s a chance to get service connected. I hope that helps.
@locknload4691Ай бұрын
I retired (20 years of service) a few years before you started your first enlistment😉 I've had hit-and-miss experiences with different VA VISN's (regions) since my retirement. I quickly learned, after initial interactions with VA administrative personnel, that representing oneself was generally futile. So, I authorized, via power of attorney, local county veterans service officers to argue/communicate concerns with the applicable VA personnel/sections, and the outcomes were usually favorable to me. Lastly, I haven't utilized the VA as a healthcare provider in any situation, but instead rely on TRICARE since access to healthcare in my area was excellent and more convenient.

I never respected those who "bought relationships"...another reason I did not respect STEP promotions. I saw how STEP worked early in my career when we had a Sgt make SSgt through STEP and 13 months later was STEP Promoted to TSgt! This individual worked at the White House whereas I worked at the SAF level in the Pentagon. Most in the USAF do not respect these types of promotions or stratifications. I was proud to know my job, do it well, and retire as a MSgt.

It wasn’t pride in the Army, there’s senior NCOs and officers that talk down on people seeking medical treatment. Thankfully none of that bothered me, and to be honest up to my third year I always thought disability was only for combat injuries. It wasn’t until a soldier fell off the rappelling tower, and got a medical discharge for his wrist that I grasped the concept. Looking back I would tell my 20 year old self to get a full body scan and sleep apnea test on my time off instead of going clubbing etc. That way the only people that would have something to say would be your inner circle.

My son wants to join the USSF. He has gone through MEPS and has sworn in. He went in to the recruiter today and he told him to pick 10 AFSC's. He wants Cyber, which is what he told the recruiter before swearing in. I retired last year as a Shirt, (23 years total svc...8 of those in the USMC). I believe I know better, as in I know about filling a slot based on needs. Is it possible for him to go through another recruiter? I want to lead him correctly because this is his career. What should I tell him? Thanks in advance for taking time to respond. ◇Shirt ◇
@JodywithawhyАй бұрын
So every recruiter is going to make people list 10 jobs. That’s a normal practice. But if he strictly wants to join the Space Force, he needs to identify to the recruiter he only wants space force. That way the recruiter doesn’t make him list Air Force jobs too. This should’ve already been established before. Since he’s in the DEP, if he were to try and jump to another recruiter, it would do more harm than good. So I’d recommend just having a talk with the recruiter.

My recruiter told me I can’t go security forces because I have 2 misdemeanors from when I was 15 years old which was 7 years ago they were both technically dismissed after completing 6 months probation and paying a $125 fine and everyone I’ve talked to that is in or recently got out of the air force says that it sounds like he’s bsing me. Would you have any insite whether or not he’s being honest he’s a new recruiter so I figured it’s possible he might not know he’s only been doing it for less then 3 months.

Security forces is a field in the airforce that’s not popular so it might be false, but if you have Reddit the AirforceRecruit sub can answer this best. Misdemeanors can be expunged by 18 though depending on where you are id file a petition to have this sealed.

I used to rap when I first joined. For the first 6 years, I was killing and even got offered a couple of record deals. Nothing big enough to commit to, but I had enough time to pursue it harder than I did before I joined (mainly because I was making more money). I eventually ended up having to move to a new location, and I didn’t feel like starting over building my presence in a new city, so I gave it up. I will say this, it’s tough balancing Air Force and music because at the end of the day, the Air Force is more important than your music career. So there will be opportunities you miss because of the Air Force. But you will also make more income to invest in your dream so there’s pros and cons.
