I love Pratchett's take on Tolkien “J.R.R. Tolkien has become a sort of mountain, appearing in all subsequent fantasy in the way that Mt. Fuji appears so often in Japanese prints. Sometimes it’s big and up close. Sometimes it’s a shape on the horizon. Sometimes it’s not there at all, which means that the artist either has made a deliberate decision against the mountain, which is interesting in itself, or is in fact standing on Mt. Fuji.” ― Terry Pratchett

The crazy thing is that I got recommended Joe Abercrombie through watching Brandon Sanderson's lecture videos. When he talks about breaking in and the notes he received, he pretty much says "They really wanted Joe Abercrombie, but didn't know it yet". To add to the magic, I was broke but had an audible credit at the time. Now I've got everything of his on Audible, which a lot of people think is the best way to consume them. 🤘

i wanted to say this very thing. Some interviews you learn to just let the subjects talk. Good interviewers are there to facilitate and get people talking. To guide. So when it's going well you get out of the way.

Just one little criticism though: The couches as background appears to be too ambitious. It might have been a lot better if it is a plain simple background like one color and Daniel is either on the center with the two authors on the left and right or on the top or screen. I mean, this is still a Daniel Greene's Channel, right? We still need to see his appearance even if he only asks questions. We seem to have lost the brand image of Daniel by resizing him on the right side.

Not sure if audiobooks are your thing, but you'd be doing yourself a massive favor if you listened to all of Abercrombie's work vs reading it. Best writer/narrator duo in all of fiction imo. His work stands among the top of the fantasy pantheon in its own right, but Pacey's narration is what elevates his books (particularly the Age of Madness trilogy and the stand alones) into some of the greatest tales ever told. Enjoy!!

What Sanderson said about burning out on fantasy in 00s, I hit a slump for exactly the reasons he stated. I stopped reading fantasy for years and gravitated towards comics/manga. I've rediscovered my passion for it in the last few years, there are so many great authors and series with so much diversity, I feel like a teenager dipping my toe back in. I've a TBR that's going to last me years. Both these authors have contributed to this. I loved this interview, thank you

The difference between the two author's styles are immense but I enjoyed them both equally. Moved onto the Powdermage Triliogy and am really enjoying that too. Sorry for rambling. Just wanna say this is kind of surreal for me seeing two authors who recently affected my understanding of the genre so much chatting together. They have both inspired me to start writing.

As hard as it is to accept it brandon is right about animation. Do i think you can often tell a better story capturing all the beauty and nuance of a world with animation? Yes. But then i get to someone like my sister in law. Mid 20s, huge kpop and kdrama fan. Shes watched a ton of shows with me and my brother on reccomendation and loved everything. Has watched 1 out of the 70 odd animated shows and movies we reccomended. A lot of people still hold the idea that animation is for kids. And that needs a decade or more to begin to change

I do think that despite a live-action adaptation having more credibility/oomph in the industry, a series like Mistborn and Stormlight feel like they are better suited for animated works because there is a lot of action and motion that goes into the magic systems of those worlds, and I personally find that animation can capture that better than a heavily VFXed movie.

That said, the man that got me BACK into fantasy reading after 10-12 years away was Sanderson when I kept seeing/hearing about Stormlight Archive and gave it a go and fell in love. For a bit there in 2020-2021 Sanderson was my modern fave. Then Abercrombie has completely and utterly taken over my life since. The viewers often forget how much latency is involved in these 3 conversations both from a network perspective but also from software perspective and whatever audio chain everyone has. That said this was handled very well. What people are coding as “interrupting” or you being talked over are actually just symptoms of the medium and excitable loquacious people having a fun conversation. Exactly what I’d hoped. Nice :)
