'Joe Biden's decline will deliver Donald Trump': A James O'Brien analysis | LBC

Күн бұрын

As more and more call for Joe Biden to pull out of the 2024 presidential race, James O'Brien tries to fathom 'how Joe Biden's stuttering could push people into the hands of the repeated sex-offender Donald Trump'.
James O'Brien gives this analogy: 'It's like if someone stood against Hitler with a decent chance of winning, and there would have been a significant amount of the population saying they aren't going to vote for Hitler, and then the other guy falls over or eats a bacon sandwich badly, and then they all say 'oh, actually I am going to vote for Hitler.''
Movie star and lifelong Democrat George Clooney is the latest to have added his voice to calls for Joe Biden to leave the 2024 presidential race.
The actor said in a New York Times opinion piece that he loves President Biden but the party would lose the presidential race as well as any control in Congress with him as the nominee.
The President has insisted he is staying in the race and even challenged Democrat 'elites' to challenge him at the party's convention in August.

I am72. I do not have dementia. I write and record songs using complicated computer programs...BUT....sometimes I forget words. I forget names. I now walk with a stick and often fall asleep in the afternoon. Even at my (relatively) young age I would be a liability as leader of the free world. And if Biden wins he will still be in the job 4 years later and be 4 years older. That is worrying and even more worrying is that his candidteship will lead to the return of the worst President in history.

My Grandfather was 95 when he died. He was more lucid than Biden appeared and he had so much energy he involved himself in local politics and park engineering as a hobby. he would intricately explain things without stumbling over words, forgetting things or names or anything like that. People age differently, an 80 year old *can* be a leader. but Biden seems ill-suited to it.

This is precisely where I am as well as an American. I geniunely wish Biden would have passed on the torch to Harris. @@nonyabisness6306 This is the core problem with Biden. And if I was American I'd vote for him regardless with Trump as the alternative. His age should have meant that he and his team exercised better judgement about the debate. Get rest beforehand. Make it clear he had a cold (if he had one) before the debate. Prep Biden with soundbites, not facts & figures. Develop effective tactics for Trump. None of this appeared to have been done. Which raises further questions about how his team are dealing with wider matters, or if Biden is over-ruling them. None of this is satisfactory and all of it is worrying.

Regardless of what convinces you, at least one of them IS running for president, and if Biden drops out, then Trump will probably win. And the "free world" will be less free. All this talk of age should be a consideration, but it really should be secondary to the fact that Trump is a convicted felon who admires dictators around the world and has no respect for all the other leaders throughout the "free world". Biden should be judged by the past four years, not a disastrous TV debate with a pathological liar / bully / conman / criminal who wants to be a dictator "on day one". Twelve months from now, perhaps my green card could be revoked for this kind of comment. And age is your concern?

Most people didn't watch the debate (only 50 million out of 150 million voters watched the debate). Those that DID watch the debate actually didn't interpret Biden's performance the way the media did. And this is where the crux of the problem lies. The media has been pounding the drum since the night of the debate. Breathless articles and commentary, repeated questioning of everyone who comes on the air, and the incessant coverage about getting Biden off the ticket has dominated the conversation. Rather than talking about Trump's obvious mental decline, lies, and danger to democracy commentators, paid pundits, and "well meaning" journalists have just fed into the panic, clickbait mentality, and horserace framing of the narrative. Democrats, who are always worrying about their moral purity, have played into this narrative, and we have a repeat of 2016 and Hilary's emails. If Biden loses, it won't be because of him, it will be because we engaged in yet another circular firing squad.

Bit of a weird take given the election we just had over here where, apparently "Labour didn't win, the Tories lost." What makes you think the situation in the US is that much different? Most democratic voters would vote Democrat even if they had a Capybara as a leader at this point. Biden needs to sway independent voters, sure, but the election is still far away and the choice between the two parties is so distinct that it supercedes the small matter of who the figurehead is. Biden's debate performance probably wouldnt have mattered in the grand scheme of things until it started getting constantly talked about in the media.

The Tories didn't lose the election from opposition or in the campaign arena though, they lost it as an incumbent administration with fourteen years of uninterrupted failure fresh in everyone's minds, whereas America has had four years to forget exactly how bad Trump was. The title of this video has occurred to me too. The ironic thing is that part of his appeal to the Democrats in 2020 was that he was polling as the Democrat best-placed to beat Trump. That now seems to have reversed. I thought his plan in 2020 would be to serve a term and then hand it on. He's had a great career and could continue to be influential from the sidelines in an advisory role but it's not the sort of job you want to tarry too long in. Your pluses can become minuses and you don't want to be analysing an election loss afterwards and seeing that.

Maybe it’s the hint of cinnamon or the sweetness that makes it so appealing. I can already imagine enjoying a warm bowl, perhaps with a sprinkle of nutmeg on top. It’s not something I have often, which makes it feel even more special tonight. So, instead of the usual choices, rice pudding it is. An important thing to remember is that a lot of people do prefer Donald Trump because the politics of spite are incredibly powerful, and there are a lot of people who will actively vote to hurt themselves if it also hurts someone they disapprove of. It's been happening in the USA for decades, back to the '50s and '60s where municipal pools were all closed because white people would prefer they didn't exist at all than share them with black people when they were forced by law to desegregate. It's why the rural poor so consistently vote against any sort of government assistance that would help them because the "undeserving" city folks would get it as well. The extra special irony with MAGA is that it is mostly people who do actually have more to lose, because the MAGA heartland is exurban middle class tradies who moved out of the suburbs when the "wrong sort of people" moved in but still rely on everyone else having enough money to pay for a plumber or electrician or whatever they are.

Thanks James, catching up a bit late with your views on this topic, but absolutely agree. Just an hour ago watched a Michael Steele interview on Ari Melber's programme - would recommend it to anyone who agrees with James. It is sad that so many people seem to be doubting, when it's crystal clear. That said, American media have been absolutely vicious (re: debate, absolute hyperbole), even the left leaning channels, and though they have posed the same question as yourself, they've done it with little conviction, like they might be scared of sticking up for the guy. The agressiveness of the Trump style, has become so normalised, it would seem, that unless you are a bully, you are no longer respected in USA.

I think Biden should relinquish to someone younger, personally i favor Governer Whittmer in Michigan. However I dont know if there is the time and the leverage to move Biden out. That being said i still put Biden's odds at 50-50 aginst Trump. Its my belief negative motivation will determine this election, and there are enough Americans who would vote for a scarecrow over Trump to keep this thing competitive.

Yeah.. I think it was a mistake to not have primaries and for him to not retire and take the baggage with him (earned as well as undeserved). There is a risk in any replacement having some major past issues/poor performance aspects because none of them have been pressed that hard. One of the weird aspects is that people will, generally, take Biden and know he probably won't serve the full term and that's fine. It's the continuance of the current form of govt and gears turning etc. For the GOP, if Trump went away, everything would fold immediately. His cabinet was a dumpster fire last time and that was with the best people. This time it will be with the most loyal people (capability isn't a top consideration). People would suddenly have to accept that they are for those policy planks (and a lot of them don't want to do that). I think the numbers just have to decide this. Project 2025 is a disaster. The risks after recent SC rulings is too high to hand the keys to someone like Trump. The legislature under Trump would be awful. They can barely figure out lunch time as it is. I think that "govt that at least tries to work as it should" rather than "the strongman will fix everything" likely decides the election.

It will be a hard decision for Biden and Democrats to make the change but the upside of a late change is a major momentum shift. Trump knows this, which is why he is reacting to the situation right now.

Biden being a bit doddery isn’t an existential threat to life. A Biden White House is better than that. But Trump slithering in because voters lack confidence in Biden is an existential threat to all of us. That is the concern. Vote for Biden or get their act together and support an alternative candidate. That is the choice and time to make that choice is very limited.

Americans will not vote for weakness - "we" think it's a reflection on us. It's pathetic, but that's who we are. So with Biden on the ticket, they'll either stay home or vote for the "stronger" candidate.

Yes, your linkage of stuttering with cognitive decline is unfortunate. Maybe you could word that better and not use a speech impediment to make your point about someone dithering and confusing words. That's not stuttering. You moved past that comment quickly by describing it simply as 'unfortunate'. I have a stutter and a PhD and I found the comment ignorant in the extreme.

The answer is that all that Trump is and has done is factored in. Anything he does loses its impact within a few weeks and just gets added to the pile. Even Jan 6th on the day people said ‘it’s over for Trump and even the Republican Party, they can’t come back from this ever.’ And now it’s ‘oh are people still going on about Jan 6th? Get over it it was years ago now’.
