Joe Bussard talking about recording a young John Fahey for his Fonotone records 78s, this was later re-issued as Your Past Comes Back To Haunt You: The Fonotone Years 1958--1965 by Dust-to-Digital ( www.dust-digital.com/fahey/ )
Excerpt from the Desperate Man Blues documentary ( www.dust-digital.com/dmb-dvd/ )
These are both highly recommended
I don't own any rights
Prior to his discovery in 1958 by a Takoma research team Fahey had played as a guitarist for a bluegrass band. Sometime in 1956 he was smote to the ground by a bolt of lightning. Upon awakening he heard Blind Willie Johnson singing and from that time onward he ceased playing hillbilly and concentrated upon blues. His first recordings were made under somewhat mysterious circumstances for the Fonotone company - a pioneer in the folkfield.

Joe Bussard also has one of the most extensive collections of 78's in the world. I hope someone protects it.....

Maybe he said 17 because maybe Fahey seemed a little bit younger and more innocent ... ? I would have liked to have heard him talk a little bit more about him and exactly what he meant by weird ... not just getting wound up at 4:00 a.m. ... but anything else about him .

"Play it like you mean it, boy..." So if '62 was the last time Fahey worked w/ Bussard, can we assume the titular "Days Have Gone By" was cut then, if not earlier? It certainly sounds earlier than its 1967 release date.

theres some amazing reverb and phasing effects on that record. Very innovative and ahead of its time, especially considering their budget
