I met Joe in Times Square in New York soon after he retired he was walking around with his wife and nobody knew who he was but I’m a huge boxing fan my whole life . I approached him and they were very humble and seemed very happy to be noticed , He will always be one of my favorite fighters

Same here with British boxer Kirkland Lang, a former WC. I used to live in Hackney East London. I got on the train at Hackney Station and sat down. Directly opposite me with his wife and kids was former world middleweight champion Kirkland Lang. He was a great fighter he even beat Roberto Duran. I sat there amazed!😱

Eubanks recovery after being clearly dazed is possibly the most impressive I've seen in any boxer, his final two fights at cruiserweight both losses three months apart... the punishment he took in the first fight you'd have thought he would be put of action for years but he came back exactly three months later, my favourite fighter from my childhood and that generation.

In his "prime"? No, but he was reaching his apex. Joe was a pup here. The commentators even say "is this Calzaghe gonna be a force in the supermiddle division?" LOL Meaning they barely knew his game. This was one of those "test" fights a young up an Comer tests themselves against an old veteran.

The confidence and charisma oozing out of Eubank here is amazing. The man knows how to put on a show, for sure. Calzaghe is of course also one of the greatest of all time. British boxing was in a great spot at this moment in time.

You know what though? This time period was UTTERLY FRUSTRATING for a young boxing fanatic back then. We KNEW how good the middles-supermiddles were across the pond (with Benn, Eubanks, Watson, Graham, McCallum) then our side (Jones Jr., Toney, McClellan, Hopkins etc) but How Many of those high number of great matchups did we get in their primes?!?!?! Wanted to see like Toney-Benn, Watson-Jones Jr., or hell even like Eubanks-Toney or Jones. Any of those myriad great fights never happened except a few later on. It was almost like Destiny that they never happened after the Benn McClellan tragedy and Watson-Eubanks tragedy. That sucked so fkn bad. It was like an era destroyed after those two fights. Hate it to this day.

Eubank did change somewhat after Watson but only when he was dominating a fighter .. here he wasn't holding back at all because he was fighting for his life because calzaghe was was all over him

@@KevinKilgorepage yes I remember seeing Eubank waving the ref in during one fight because he had a fellow boxer on the ropes who wouldn't go down but was taking multiple big hits to the head off Eubank so it was very evident that Eubanks didn't want another Watson on his hands which is understandable.. as for calzaghe he was brilliantly elusive incredibly fast hands very accurate and could go the distance .. also after all those fights amateur then 46 undefeated as a pro there's not a mark on his face and no flat nose which shows just how good his defence was .. the lacy fight was Joe at his very best giving lacy who was the out and out favourite to beat calzaghe pre fight the boxing lesson of his life leaving lacy in hell of a mess at the end.. Pound for pound for me one of the very best in the world and a the best by a country mile ever produced from Britain

​ is it ? was it ? I agree with all of what you said. Joe was passed over in the US because they ALL knew, imo, He was the longest reigning champion and had to wait 8 years for Lacy.... It is obvious why. And Lacy's camp made the claim Joe was a washed up fighter on the decline and this is the reason they took the fight. They thought they had waited long enough for Joe to slow down. Apparently NOT ! :) . Just like in his fights, they waited for Joe to slow down and it never happened. And for me, because of the pre-fight build up, I really enjoyed watching Joe destroy the guy. The first time I watched the fight I felt sorry for Lacy, But after I had seen all of the pre-fight nonsense of the Lacy camp I did not feel sorry for him at all. They actually believed they had waited him out and that they were fighting an old man. And OMG did you hear Lacy's girlfriend shrieking thoughout the fight ? "Fight Jeff Fight ! Fuck him up Jeff" Wow ... talk about no class. And she was also popping off in the build up to the fight. "Oh , my man is READY, They better be ready !" ... I thought she was going to climb into the ring more than once. And one more thing, The ref in that fight and commentators clearly had Lacy love going on. They all probably had money on the fight. The ref literally walking Lacy to his corner after every round, and stopping the fight in the 12 th for Lacy's tape, look closely at that, there was NO reason to give Lacy that break in the 12 with less than 1 minute to go and Joe had put him down in that round...

People saying Eubank past his prime lol, he was 31 years old. With age comes experience, he had 5-6 year on Joe, whatever 'losses' Eubank had for being oh so old at 31, his experience would have made up for it. joe never got the respect he deserved cos he was welsh. End of story. Dont get me wrong, I love Eubank as a boxing icon, he reminds me of being a kid and he was a little crazy, but you can never forget him and I respect him massively, but lets not pretend Eubank was 40. A 31 yr with his training and physical abilities would be equiv to someone MUCH MUCH younger anyway. credit where it due, joe was just a bloody good boxer with some amazing boxing stats that rival or beat most of the greats.

Eubank wasn't as deadly and hungry as he used to be when he was at his prime at the point when he took on this guy, else it may have been a bloody ring that night, this guy was also much younger in this fight. Would've been very bloody in his prime, he even had some other bouts after this lost out, that was when I knew his time was up and he had to leave thecene for the younger and fresher ones.

One of the more entertaining 👏 bouts I've seen in my home country, the good old 🇬🇧. I believe in my humble opinion, Chris Eubank was a more dominating opponent for Joe, then Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. Joe did later on in his life admit that Eubank was his toughest opponent. Not by any means taking anything away from B Hop or R.J.J. If they were in there prime they would have made Joe work even harder then he had to,to beat them.

jow was definitely pressing the fight first round, but chris appeared to avoid the worst of his offense and after chris got knocked down, he kind of seemed to have the expression on his face of "congratulations, but what's nextly important is i'm ready to go at it again." chris seemed like at times he mayve had potential to turn the fight around, but joe kept his arms prepared to be launched pretty steadily throughout the match.
