TactlessPanther AKA DR T because he slapped his whole career. And didn’t fight anyone worth mentioning. Couldn’t even beat a old Hopkins. And fought them when old. No wonder he was forgotten by his own country

You just gotta love that Eubank's reaction to getting knocked down was congratulating Joe for the punch. "Good shot! Good shot!" Pure class in both skill and demeanor from these guys over their careers.

To be fair not many people legitimately dropped eubank, Chris took this fight at short notice towards the end of his career. If they had met 5 years earlier calzagies career may have took a different path? That being said I love calzagie, he fought whoever was put in front of him and had one of the best chins on the planet.

I’m an American and I think Joe Calzaghe is one of the greatest fighters I’ve ever seen. The Kessler fight was so intense. BTW... I don’t like to admit it but Chris Eubank was phenomenal as well… His wins against Nigel Benn were impressive. Benn was a killer. Boxing is universal like music and math

*Calzaghe is the longest-reigning super middleweight world champion in history, having held the WBO title for over ten years and making 21 successful defenses before relinquishing the title to move up to light heavyweight. As his super middleweight and light heavyweight reigns overlapped, he retired with the longest continual time as world champion of any active fighter.*

Earl Of Somerset unlucky he wasn't around when the greats were at there peak. A prime Jones beats calzaghe. Eubank gave calzaghe a good fight way past his prime and took fight a short notice. Calzaghe him self said eubank his toughest fight of his career. Calzaghes words. Calzaghe great boxer not denying that. Could a prime Lennox Lewis beat a prime Tyson. Lennox career similar he never really thought any greats the division wasn't that great then.

my favourite champion ever never prepared to loose infinite stamina and peppered opponents into submission. although if anyone followed calzaghe earlier on in his career and it shows in this fight calzaghe left hand was formidable he knocked down eubank and if anyone knows eubank he had a face of stone. calzaghe suffered with hand injuries from the sheer power and the amount of punches he landed on an opponents head. he was forced to switch style and unable to throw those venomous punches that could put a man out cold. truly an underrated champion. the best in Europe ever I believe and top 10 of all time. also please those who say about Joe fighting older fighters he just fought who ever they put up in front of him. look what happened to the next Mike tyson jeff lacy that is the display of a true boxing genius I've never seen a display like that. a true champion Joe calzaghe.

Jeff Lacy got KOd by complete no names like Unberto Savienge and Sullivan Berrera DESTROYED him worse than Calzaghe. Calzaghe couldn’t even stop him. I love how Calzaghe fans have to throw in that he was never the same to try to justify how bad Lacy Sucked. There are literally hundreds of worse beatings if you actually follow boxing. Go watch JC Chavez destroy Greg Haugen...go watch the St Valentines Day Massacare (Robinson v Jake Lamotta) !! Joe Calzaghe was a over rated fighter with a padded record of bums.. and no real boxing historians rate him anywhere in the top 100 of anything.

@macchirpy 5 жыл бұрын
Would hardly say RJ jnr was washed up when he fought Joe, not his prime but certainlynot washed up. RJ jnr had beaten felix trinidad earlier that year and he was a decent boxer. And jones went.on to have another 18 fights, winning 14 of those. Just wish people would give Joe the credit he deserves. Imagine what he would have been like if his hands weren't smashed up!
@checkandbalance2903
@checkandbalance2903 5 жыл бұрын
Macchirpy PLEASE. Roy Jones has already been KOd by Tarver and Glenn Johnson Knocked him thru the ring. Right after fighting Calzaghe he was KOd in the FIRST ROUND by no name Danny Green. Jones prime ended in 2002 by 2005 he was washed up. The Trinidad fight was meaningless. Trinidad moves up 5 weight classes above his prime class and had been retired for years before taking that fight for money. And please stop with the hands crap. Frank Warren exposes Calzaghe for faking hand injuries to avoid fights. Joe Calzaghe fans are the most ill informed people in boxing. Nice try with Jones having 18 more fights. Anyone with a clue can see he didn’t beat ANYONE. Who was remotely good. He lost 3 in a row before fighting two tune ups before Calzaghe and then he lost. 3 of 5 AFTER fighting Calzaghe. So after going 50 -0 Jones LOST 7 fights in a span of 12. And that’s not washed up to you ?????? What is washed up buddy ?? He went on a farewell tour in Russia and Europe fighting complete bums for money. Meaningless.

@checkandbalance2903
@checkandbalance2903 5 жыл бұрын
Michael I appreciate your thoughtful comment. But your missing how this whole thing works. To answer your question YES. I would. Every fighter who wants to break into the big time needs to take a short purse to ge there first big fight. It’s how boxing works. Canelo took short money to fight Mayweather but the fight put him on the map and he’s now the most popular fighters the sport. And let’s be fair and honest here bc you seem like reasonable guy, Calzaghe wasn’t really “the champ” for years. We all know that there are multiple sanctioning bodies and Calzaghe was holing the lightly regarded WBO. That wasn’t one of the big 3 titles that people generally recognized. He wasn’t unified champ. The WBC and WBA were much more sought titles. So no one (and Frank Warren knew this) was going to go to Wales and take short money to fight for a title that no one really seriously cared about RIGHT ?? That’s why Calzaghes title defenses were against a string of poor fighters. Guys like Charles Brewer who had already been vanquished from the top went to Europe and were willing to make some money fighting for an alphabet strap. No big name had the slightest interest in the 168 lb WBO title. Its absurd to think Jones or Hopkins would split a purse with virtual no name when they were making lots of money on US PPV. Not withstanding he was a good fighter. I don’t deny him that. Clearly it was up to Calzaghe to come to Vegas, fight a few good fighters and establish a name. They he could have gotten a big money fight circa 2002 or so. Instead we all know what he did...he fought the Pudwell and Omar Sheika and took the lions share of a smaller purse. It was Frank warrens business model. It’s smart but it means the 46-0 is not really all that special when 49 of those fights were against really truly pathetic opposition. Go to boxing rec and calculate the win percentage of the average Calzaghe opponent. It’s 69 percent. Compare that to others, like Ward who’s was 89 percent. Calzaghe fought a lot of cans and there is no way around that.
@mizofan
@mizofan 3 жыл бұрын
@@checkandbalance2903 Warren was simply having to excuse his own failure to secure bigger fiights. Hopkins avoided Calzaghe, wanted much more money (risk-reward certainly didn't suit him), Jones had other fish to fry. Hopkins' late career showed up fighters who it was claimed would beat Calzaghe. Joe was clearly the best at his weight during his career.

One of if not the best British boxers of all time. Americans will always say that Joe fought Roy Jones and others when they were old but so was Joe.

I forgot Joe beat all the greats of his era, criminally underrated that guy.
