To be fair not many people legitimately dropped eubank, Chris took this fight at short notice towards the end of his career. Macchirpy PLEASE. Roy Jones has already been KOd by Tarver and Glenn Johnson Knocked him thru the ring. Right after fighting Calzaghe he was KOd in the FIRST ROUND by no name Danny Green. Jones prime ended in 2002 by 2005 he was washed up. The Trinidad fight was meaningless. Trinidad moves up 5 weight classes above his prime class and had been retired for years before taking that fight for money. And please stop with the hands crap. Frank Warren exposes Calzaghe for faking hand injuries to avoid fights. Joe Calzaghe fans are the most ill informed people in boxing. Nice try with Jones having 18 more fights. Anyone with a clue can see he didn’t beat ANYONE. Who was remotely good. He lost 3 in a row before fighting two tune ups before Calzaghe and then he lost. 3 of 5 AFTER fighting Calzaghe. So after going 50 -0 Jones LOST 7 fights in a span of 12. And that’s not washed up to you ?????? What is washed up buddy ?? I watched Calzaghe as an amateur when he boxed my mates lad, You could see even as an amateur that he was a skilfull boxer.i wish people would give Boxers more respect regardless of if they like them or not, every boxer can,t fight every boxer in their prime, its a ridiculous arguement anyway, A Boxer can only fight the Boxers of his era, of course Eubank was in the twilight of his career but then you could say that about alot of Fights, Boxers should,nt be slagged off because of the year they were born.

I still don't think Jo, to this day, is given the credit he deserves, especially by American's. One thing they often say is he couldn't punch...look at his knockout record and he floored the granite chinned Eubanks...twice. For me he had it all. He's as near to perfect as you can get.

Always liked Chris Eubank and his personality :) A great fighter (elusive) and a gentleman that brought some flair to the proceedings. The only time he wasn't a gentleman, was if you faced him in the ring ..then, it was all business And the fact he has all his 'marbles' today, shows just how great an elusive fighter he was (considering he would get in close). So many punches, either avoided or skilfully slipped.

@michaelthomas84395 жыл бұрын
Thats because they wouldn't fight him earlier as he wasn't considered a big enough name, he did try
@checkandbalance29035 жыл бұрын
According to Frank Warren he didn’t try. Trying would have been taking less of the purse and going to Vegas to face Bigger name fighters.. he didn’t do that. He figured he could beat up on WBO mandatory B level fighters and wait until guys like Jones were good and shot. Jones was KOd badly twice already. That’s called waiting until the waters are safe !!
@michaelthomas84395 жыл бұрын
@@checkandbalance2903 if you were offered a low ball offer and you've been the champ for years, would you sell yourself short just to fight a big name when they are not willing to compromise, and want an overwhelming majority of the purse, they gave him a throw away offer not a serious one, jones and Hopkins did not want that fight at all, until they had no other choice but to take it
@checkandbalance29035 жыл бұрын
Michael I appreciate your thoughtful comment. But your missing how this whole thing works. To answer your question YES. I would. Every fighter who wants to break into the big time needs to take a short purse to ge there first big fight. It’s how boxing works. Canelo took short money to fight Mayweather but the fight put him on the map and he’s now the most popular fighters the sport. And let’s be fair and honest here bc you seem like reasonable guy, Calzaghe wasn’t really “the champ” for years. We all know that there are multiple sanctioning bodies and Calzaghe was holing the lightly regarded WBO. That wasn’t one of the big 3 titles that people generally recognized. He wasn’t unified champ. The WBC and WBA were much more sought titles. So no one (and Frank Warren knew this) was going to go to Wales and take short money to fight for a title that no one really seriously cared about RIGHT ?? That’s why Calzaghes title defenses were against a string of poor fighters. Guys like Charles Brewer who had already been vanquished from the top went to Europe and were willing to make some money fighting for an alphabet strap. No big name had the slightest interest in the 168 lb WBO title. Its absurd to think Jones or Hopkins would split a purse with virtual no name when they were making lots of money on US PPV. Not withstanding he was a good fighter. I don’t deny him that. Clearly it was up to Calzaghe to come to Vegas, fight a few good fighters and establish a name. They he could have gotten a big money fight circa 2002 or so. Instead we all know what he did...he fought the Pudwell and Omar Sheika and took the lions share of a smaller purse. It was Frank warrens business model. It’s smart but it means the 46-0 is not really all that special when 49 of those fights were against really truly pathetic opposition. Go to boxing rec and calculate the win percentage of the average Calzaghe opponent. It’s 69 percent. Compare that to others, like Ward who’s was 89 percent. Calzaghe fought a lot of cans and there is no way around that.
@mizofan3 жыл бұрын
@@checkandbalance2903 Warren was simply having to excuse his own failure to secure bigger fiights. Hopkins avoided Calzaghe, wanted much more money (risk-reward certainly didn't suit him), Jones had other fish to fry. Hopkins' late career showed up fighters who it was claimed would beat Calzaghe. Joe was clearly the best at his weight during his career.
