My older brother's high school girlfriend bought Leon's Shelter People LP when it came out and brought it over to our house. Like my brother's girlfriend, that LP became part of the family! Man, that album digs deep. I still get chills listening to certain songs on that LP (Stranger in a strange land, Hard rain) it it so good. And Claudia Lennear just kicks ass on Crystal Closet Queen! By 1978, when I started seeing Leon live in New York with my own high school girlfriend, his long hair was already all white but he rocked out as hard as ever. He was the glue on so many seminal recordings from that era. And Claudia Lennear's voice ... spine tingling!

About 20 yrs ago i got invited to a Leon Russell concert in Phoenix Arizona, I had no idea who he was, I was completely melted away with the awesomeness, it was a small theater and he walked right past me to leave the stage, I know i was gaping at him like a idiot, I saw so many muscicians in concert, from my first of Cat Stevens, to Dylan, Peter Gabriel Tull Stones the list goes on, but Leon Russel was the BEST show, I was so awestruck, I dont know what it was but he HAS IT!!

Saw Joe Cocker and Stevie Ray Vaughn. In Hamilton not too long before SRV died. Was not a huge fan of either before the gig, but knew enough about them. Needless to say I left with a new addition to my musical education and an admiration for both. Great gig. Show started with SRV then Joe then together. Almost 4 hours later it was over. Feather in my cap to say I saw both of them. What a voice.

Dan Beal Leon had a house on Grand lake in NE Oklahoma . I understand the Beatles visited that place at one time as well as many others. Our family had a camping spot near by where we went several times every summer . I was just a kid but me and my uncle paddled our inflatable raft just off shore and heard the music and saw the party . I had no Idea at the time who I was hearing and seeing . I do now .

A lot of the concerts I have been to over the years it seems like they never do my favorite song. I saw Joe about 21 years ago and I will never forget all the way into the concert I was hoping so bad he would play my favorite song of his. The concert started and out walks Joe and he opens with Cry Me A River! I was so happy. I don't think a band has ever opened with my favorite song except Joe!!! (I guess I should of posted this on the Cry Me A River video) LOL

Great musicians take a so-so song and make it great. I miss the days of collaboration between folks from different groups; just getting together for the music, not the money, and creating magic. A buddy and I are going to see Leon in Chicago in April and I can't wait.

Look at that crowd. They had no idea that they were witnessing what I will put forth as the greatest live rock and roll recording ever! They had to hack, cut add paste for the movie, but the album version of 'The Letter' is the best live recording in history. [What do you all think?] It's no accident that these guys sound SO good together. Check out Leon and Delaney Bramlett's videos from the old Shindig TV show. Most of these guys, including Leon from time to time, were the core of Delaney and Bonnie' "Friends" touring group, which at various times included Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Dave Mason and Dwayne Allman. All of music since the Beach Boys (who had Leon play all the hard keyboard parts...) can draw a DIRECT line of influence back to Leon Russell and Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett. Leon made the Hall of Fame: it's HIGH TIME to get Delaney and Bonnie in there too!

@judecreek2 Just read the latest Rolling Stone issue, interview with Elton John and noted how Elton thought of Leon as one of his great heroes and how Leon had kinda fallen on hard times music and money wise, Elton took him on tour, recorded with him, bought him a new Baby Grand and now Leon has a brand new tour bus and Leon has been lifted up quite a bit. Quite a nice tribute to Lean on behalf of Elton. Elton came off as very respectful and generous to Leon. Leon wrote a song for Elton.

@schwibert In 1972 during his "Leon Live" tour, I was 16 and saw the show in Detroit. I made my way to the front of the stage, got Leon's attention by waving a hat that I had bought for him. He came over, took the hat, smiled at me and said "Thanks, darlin;" That was as close as I've been to him. There are 3 vids from that tour here-Stranger in a Strange Land, Alcatraz, and Dixie Lullaby. For the last one you have to type in Dixie Lullaby Now and Then, and watch all the way thru.
