Harry Redknapp was being linked with some dodgy financial dealings at the time. It came out in the press that he had money stashed in foreign accounts under his dogs name that he couldn't/wouldnt explain. They were trying to keep themselves away from any association with corruption and under the table deals. But then they hired Big Sam...

Joe was one of those players who had all the potential in the world but never pushed on for whatever reason. All the tricks and flicks in the world but the physicality just didn’t seem to be there for the grown man’s game. Remember watching him come through at West Ham and scoring his first goal at Upton Park against Bradford and thought this is the moment he’ll properly take this on, he never did. His shot always seemed powderpuff (with the notable exception of that goal v Sweden in ‘06). I think he was always on the fringes because he just didn’t develop from that outrageously talented youth player whereas players with lesser natural ability like Frank Lampard outperformed him through hard sheer work and self belief.

The question Jake needs to ask Joe after that, is why then did he sign for Liverpool on a free when Spurs, managed by his favourite Harry were odds on to get him? The answer can only be that he took the better wages option, over having a manager who knew his game and might have extended his top flight career.

Interesting that Harry Redknapp was so convinced that he had the job. From what I can see he said literally everything that would stop him getting the job from mocking and offending the individuals making the decision, laughing at and mocking the long term aims the FA set at that time, etc. How did he think he would get the job?
@choppy249

Because he was the best manager by far and I assume that like the rest of the footballing world , he thought that common sense would prevail . But it didn’t .
@carlybishop6160
@carlybishop6160 2 жыл бұрын
@@choppy249 But the criteria changed for Manager. I think England have proven that a good club career means nothing. Which is why I am sure the bookies are well off the mark for next time round: Don Revie (1974 - 1977): Back to back titles with Leeds United, didn't even qualify for the 1978 World Cup Graham Taylor (1990 - 1993): Got Watford promoted 3 times in 5 years failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup Sven Goran-Erikissen (2001 - 2006): Got Lazio from mid-table to winning Serie A in one year. Yes, England reached 3 quarter-finals but no semi-final and this was with the "Golden Generation" Steve McClaren (2006 - 2007): Got Middlesbrough to a European Cup final, England failed to qualify for the 2008 Euros. Fabio Capello (2009 - 2012): Seemed to have won everything he touched but England then failed to get past the Last 16, failing to beat the USA or Algeria and then got slaughtered 4-1 by Germany. The only 2 Managers who 100% records of reaching semi-finals are Terry Vennables and Gareth Southgate. Neither of whom have had good club records. With this there has been a quiet revolution behind the scenes at the FA since 2010. They identified the issues and started changing everything from the grassroots up to the senior team. The fact, that as early as 2012 Sir Trevor Brooking predicted if there were right they would expect "2018/2020 to be when we will have the depth of talent needed to be on a regular basis" and thus why the aims in 2013 were: win the U20s World Cup in 2017 (which they did along with 3 other age groups), reach the semi-final of the 2020 Euros and win the 2022 World Cup. Which they are on track with. And while this has been going, Harry Redknapp has been laughing at them, mocking their ideas, criticising some of their changes. Plus, it would all be based at St George's Park. Somewhere he made clear would be really boring. He also says he was never interviewed but just read the relevant chapter in his autobiography. He was, he just didn't realise he had been. I would love to know what he was asked. I can take a guess though.

Why is he surprised not getting games for england when he couldnt get into a woeful liverpool team. Doing well in France is hardly a big victory either. There were better people ahead of him from 2010 onwards, he was finished at the top level.

Confirms what all Spurs fans knew. Redknapp's head was turned and he thought he was a banker for the England job. Didn't get it, then loses 10 point lead over the Gooners to miss out on the CL, what a clown....

Joe shoulda stayed at WH. He would've been their top-ranked player after the other internationals left with the kind of status Declan Rice has now. Joe went to clubs who had other players who could do his job instead of being the only and obvious choice at WH. He could've been outstanding every week instead of in the shadows.

In hindsight, he wouldn't of won anything with Hodgson anyways and he was spared criticism from the horrible British press also.

Literally impossible to pick Cole during that period, he was so, so poor. One of the worst I’ve seen. Even when he came back from France there was nothing to his game.

Poor deluded soul. He wasn’t playing well so wasn’t selected. To claim it’s valid to get a place because of some old boys club arrangements sounds board-line criminal.

Lazarus He was a great player on his day. Unfortunately he wasn’t consistent. He has admitted wasn’t in form at the time and missed his chance. That’s the way things go. Hodgson picked the players that impressed at the time or were already regulars. He was seeking to be picked on what he had done in the distant past rather than current form. Quite rightly that didn’t happen.

He's not blaming Roy. He said it himself Roy never saw him play well and that's why he wasn't getting in. His point was Harry threw him a lifeline and when he didn't get the job he knew he wasn't getting in under Roy.

When Joe Cole signed for LFC I thought oh great another quality player , but it didn’t work out for him or us , sent off in first game and he never played to his potential . Too injury prone and just never achieved what he should have done .
