You should also take into consideration that these parents weren't dealing with predatory loans, and investment firms buying up all the property. We can't compete with the incredibly low interest rates these firms get, then factor in hey're paying it all in cash. Adjusting for inflation means many things. It was, by far, more affordable to live in your parents' time than now. My grandparents could live on one salary with a mortgage and two kids to support. That is impossible now, solely based on the cost of living. Inflation existed even in our parents' time, but the cost of living is increasing at a greater rate than inflation is.
