He was a regular in The Green Isle Hotel, back in the 1990s, at a time when I was doing the graveyard shift in a local filling station. He was one of several people to turn up at my serving hatch in the small hours. Brendan Grace and Charlie Landsboro are two more that come to mind, though there were more that I’m forgetting. There were no airs about Joe. He was a decent guy, finished his work and not trying to make mine any harder than it needed to be. Always a Please and a Thanks, always a smile and a kind word, before he left. Sad thing is, because he was always there and I could see him any time I liked, I never did! The only time I went to a Joe Show was in the Gaiety Theatre, when I was trying to impress my then girlfriend, now wife of nearly 30 years! I remember hearing the announcement on Shannonside Radio, the morning after he died and we both mourned his passing. It’s true, you don’t realise what you’ve got, until you lose it!
