I'm 41 and the older I get the more I prefer lower output pickups, even for metal. PAF style pickups are more dynamic. If I need more gain there are always a gain knob on my amps or I can use gain/boost pedals. I even love single-coil pickups with gain, for the dynamic and rawness, I just hate the noise but I'm about to buy a BOSS NS-2 to solve this drawback.

Gojira is one of these bands that even (open-minded) non-metal fans surprisingly often enjoy.

@@Roonagu I think it's because of the amazing balance they have in (almost) every song of theirs. They don't just focus on being brutal, they've generally always focused on melodies as well. They throw in dissonance and almost always "fix it up" with a melody that sounds like it's coming from a soul or some angel at times. And the vocals are more acceptable since it's not just some death metal growl (sure Joe throws them in/ or threw them in rather), but it's actual singing - whether distorted or not. +The amazing drums to fill the riffs, it seems like the whole band just works together in some perfect synchrony.

What I love about Gojira is their often usage of tapping in their riffs (while most metal bands utliizes tapping mainly in solos). I thing it's quite original and help them to give their music a unique flavour. Besides that a great guitar. I love classic telecaster shape, but I also love the heaviness of humbuckers, so for me it's a perfect combination ;-)

The only problem with the Tele shape is that traditionally it doesn't have any contours, but both the Jim Root and Joe Duplantier signatures have a gentle forearm contour, and the Jim Root has a pretty generous tummy cut, and the Joe's has some very nice looking carves behind the horn. I've only played one Tele-shaped guitar (my G&L ASAT), and it can be a bear to play without that forearm contour. If it weren't so expensive, I would be really eyeing up that Duplantier signature model. Seems very nice, and probably pretty versatile too, if the pickups are as he describes here.

If you'd like something a bit closer to a genuine Tele than Joe's and Jim's guitars I'd recommend the Kotzen telecaster by Fender. And it's got DiMarzio pickups too

try the pinch technique in different spots on the string around the picking area, theres a few different spots that have different pitches and its different for every guitar

Also make sure your strings are not too old, pinch harmonics sound very dull on old strings. Not saying you should change every week, but they're starting to sound mellow and dull, it's time for new ones. If for whatever reason you can't get new strings, you can kind of resuscitate the 3 lower ones by boiling them, though the pot you use for that purpose cannot be used for cooking afterwards, there's a video from SpectreSound Studios explaining at length how it's done.
