Curious is the whole spool dunked in wax or is the thread stripped off and treated then re-spooled?

While it is a lovely fly and probably hundreds of thousands of them have been tied I have never understood why many of the so called "classic" Catskill patterns for the Red Quill, Hendrickson, Blue Quill, and Quill Gordon have matched woodduck flank feathers for the wings when the naturals have dark dun wings. Any idea why the woodduck was chosen?

So beautiful. But how would the fly be without the wings, just hackled?

It will work fine.

Tim, Ive noticed in alot of your videos tying dries with more than 1 hackle, you always wrap one, then the other through the first one. This seems like the hard way to me. it seems to me that the second hackle would bind down fibers from the first, and that binding them down in the head one at a time could lead to an overly large head on the fly. Im no expert, but when I tie them I wrap both hackles together. I think mine turn out pretty good looking, so im wondering if theres some advantage to wrapping them separately.

Brad Knowles MI would think it's just personal preference, but then again, who really knows! I perceive fly tying as a hobby of persistence, problem solving, and relaxation. find what works for you, as long as it works 😉 tight lines.

Hook: Standard dry-fly hook (here a Daiichi 1170), sizes 12-16. Thread: White, 8/0 or 70 denier. Wing: Two matching wood-duck flank feathers. Tails: Medium-dun hackle fibers. Abdomen: Quill from a Rhode Island red hackle feather, soaked. Hackle: Two medium-dun feathers, slightly different colors. Coating: Thin coat of varnish or head cement over the abdomen.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Apologies, I was looking for the wax recipe used to treat the thread, I should have made that clearer.

@@tightlinevideo great video! I am also interested in the wax recipe. Is it more than just beeswax?
