I recently saw the latest documentary on George Foreman and in it he tells the story of how after he lost to Ali, the only person who came to his locker room to console him was Joe Frazier. I had always liked Joe Frazier but Foreman's comment just solidified, in my mind, what a great and compassionate man Frazier was.

Joe Frazier was my mothers favorite fighter in the 70s. Frazier looks a lot like my dad did back then. Coincidentally, I have a soft spot for Joe even though I was too young to have ever seen him fight as he was done by the mid 70s. I was old enough to remember Alis last 3 fights with Spinks, Holmes and Berwick. I remember being a kid and feeling so sorry for Ali in the Holmes fight. I remember asking my parents why doesn't he fight back? Years later as a Senior in High School and being someone who befriended a young up and comer named James Lights Out Tony who dated my next door neighbor at the time invited me to meet Ali at a signing event. It was a great day.

Joe Frazier was a world class gentleman. Very gracious and humble man who didn't appear to have a vindictive bone in his body. I was always struck by how easy going and amiable and at ease Frazier was in interviews. The complete antithesis to Ali who relished denigrating this man for some odd reason at every opportunity he could in interviews. After learning what really went on while ALi was banished from boxing and the support Joe Gave him financially and morale wise, it was disturbing and ugly to see how this decent man was treated almost like a leper within the black community all because of Ali and his character assasinating rhetoric. This had absolutely NOTHING to do with fight promotion. This was something personal and Frazier deserved a hell of a lot better than what he recieved from Muhammad and the fawning liberal press at that time. Rest in Peace Joe. You were a CHAMPION as a father, fighter and human being.

@@sleazyfellow Floyd character was designed to react to losses in that fashion, because he worked really hard in training & took those losses personally. But their is no shame in Floyd taking on those steps. Frazier on the other hand, as you stated hit it right on the head of the nail. He was comfortable & confident. Realised & Accepted it, plus he realised at that point their was only looking forward. It happened & that’s the end of it.

" There ain't no right way to do wrong. There ain't no wrong way to do right" - Joe Frazier. Other than a bit of Chuck Wepner thrown into the mix, Joe Frazier is the real Rocky Balboa. You can just see Stallone taking notes on Frazier to make those movies so great. Damn, he even got a statue in Philly where it ought to of been Frazier. Everybody ought to know that. The man was a lovely, honest, humble, courageous human being. He was brought up a God fearing kid. Went to Church, worked the farm. Loved family life. Respected his parents. Loved his siblings. His own kids adored him. Nobody can ever really say anything bad about this guy. Most champs would play around, be all ego, some false, some in with bad folks. This guy was working for his family. Earning with his hands and sweat the best way he could. He genuinely loved people and would of given his last dime to help someone less fortunate than himself. I guess this is why he also didn't die financially wealthy too. Joe loved Ali, and Ali loved Joe. Their lives were judged by their differences to a point, even their fight styles. Joe helped support Ali during his exile. Ali went on to publicly humiliate Joe building up fights. I don't think many believe Ali meant to hurt Joe, but he did get hurt by Ali. But inside and outside the ring Joe brought to people what was real. He had so much integrity. He could of said so much more against Ali, but he instead said the least he could and kept it cool. I remember seeing that slow motion of Frazier literally lifting Ali off his feet in fight one. Frazier said " I reached all the way down to Alabama for that one" But then he said that he didn't think he'd get up, and that for a time i didn't like the guy, but that in the ring Ali was a man. These two had the highest respect for each other. There will never ever be anything again to match this rivalry. People aren't made like this anymore. You gotta love Joe Frazier. Always said the truth. Could be real funny. Really relaxed and full of fun and pleasant. He was also one tough son of a "B". Yeah I must say I was upset the day he died. But then I never get upset thinking about how he lived. Thanks Joe for sharing some of your life with us. Love you man!

Dont disrespect Joe by saying he was the real Rocky...Joe was way too good of a fighter. As much as he came right at you, he didn’t get hit with a million punches on the way in and didn’t get knocked down a hundred times. He was a hard man who worked his way from nothing to the top and was one of the nicest guys ever. That’s where his similarities with Rocky end. He actually was a very good fighter and it’s a shame it took Philadelphia until damn near his death to get him a statue.

I know what you are saying, sure. Frazier really shines in this interview. Sadly there aren't enough of these. In fact I can't recall ever seeing Joe Frazier so lucid and self-confident. No doubt he is charming here but history shows that Ali had better talent inside and outside the ring. If that weren't the case we would be calling Frazier "the greatest", comparing him to Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano and we would have seen a dozen movies made about him. True enough he handed Ali his first defeat, but most of the WORLD wanted to see Ali lose anyway mainly because of his courage/boldness to stand up against WHITE RACIST! Yeah he taunted Frazier & every other boxer. That's what made Ali different from ALL BOXERS. The ability to have sarcasm & back it up in the ring! No other boxer in HISTORY did this but Ali! If he didn't talk as much, the WORLD would've loved him more, but that would not have been him. That's how Ali got his edge over most! He couldn't shake Frazier with TALK in fight 1, so he came different in the next 2 fights & won! Absolute GREATEST at adapting to ALL FIGHTERS, esp his #1 rival Frazier!

Definitely was looking for this comment 👍. I felt the same way. They are focused on this one opponent why? Didn’t mention his fighting style or other opponents he beat up or the preparation for the fight. Why are you talking about this one thing his entire visit 🤷🏽‍♂️ wtf?

Couldn't agree more with the comments below that Joe was a first class gentleman. Ali on the other hand, for all his carry-on about Islam and God and Vietnam and principles and doing the right thing, absolutely didn't always acquit himself well in his treatment of others; Joe and Malcolm X being two obvious examples. In fact if what I've read is true about the way Ali left Malcolm out to dry, it really was quite appalling. I love watching Ali for the spectacle and the talent and the laughs and the entertainment - and he was every inch the boxing gift that he claimed he was - but he really let the team down in terms of his moral compass a few times.

Ali was a reverse racist. Had no class & in fact i feel out of two equally trained boxers the larger one always wins. But Ali had no class nor gratitude towards Joe.

+CalvinSinh kid Do Your Fucking HomeWork! Ali only took mick out of smoking joe to Hype up the fight and at that time Ali had a right to be agaisnt The White People,After he converted to 'Mainstream' Islam his Views Changed on white People,That everyone is equal and are on the same level i don't blame Ali for having so much hate for the white people at that time because of what the white folk were doing to the black people.

Chizarano Rehmano Joe himself has spoken of how Ali's insults went beyond what he considered in the spirit of just hyping the fight. He said he was hurt by Ali more from his words than by the punches.

Ben can you imagine how fast he would have ran through the heavyweight today.A prime Mike Tyson is probably the closest thing to Frazier in the past 25 years and even Tyson would not have been able to keep up with Joe's stamina and would have gotten KOd around the 8th round

Joe Frazier was a wonderful man, a true role model who knew how to conduct himself as a champion. If any man ever deserved to be respected it was this man Joe Frazier, an honest, respect, a blue collar worker, who got to wear the white collar for a few years. A man who gave it to Ali better than anyone else ever did while Ali was still in his prime. Those 3 fights that they fought against each other, definitely shortened their career's. I also have to say that as great a fighter as Ali was, he could be verbally cruel and abusive. I can fully understand why Frazier hated him so much, for causing him, and his family so much grief.
