@@shaundouglas2057 from what I've been told Joe helped Ali it's well well known that he helped him out financially during his Ban, when he returned to Boxing and they were to fight each other Ali treated the promotion like he did before with every other Fight let his Mouth go & started criticizing Joe also name calling but to Ali that was part of the Game then realising what this had done to JF Ali spent the best part of 40yrs apologising to Joe he accepted the apology but would usually bring it up when drunk and actually tried attacking a Parkinsons inflicted Ali at some Awards ceremony now my friend told me this he's big Boxing Man, his Source IDK but I've no doubt to disbelieve him, if anyone can give me an account of their relationship it would much appreciated?✌️👊

Let's not forget that this wasn't a totally selfless act. Frazier couldn't be fully accepted by the public as the HWC without defeating Ali. He also knew that he wasn't going to get anywhere near the record $2.5 Million (in '71) fighting anyone else. Without Ali getting back his license, Frazier'd have to fight 5 other guys to earn that.

Robert Matthews Think of all the celebrities and public figures out there. How many would you want to associate with? Extremely few. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to think of a single famous person you'd let into your home and sit on your furniture and drink your beer. But George Foreman and Joe Frasier are two guys you'd love to have for friends. I would have given my right arm to have spent an evening with Joe Frasier. What a mensch!

I once met Smokin Joe in the mid 70s when I was a teenager up in Seattle, he truly is a unique guy and I feel bad on how his life eneded, he was basically broke, living upstairs of a boxing gym. I hope his family is fine these days

@cptamazing12 well,his gym That he built out of his own money got shut down,in his last days he was living in a tiny flat above his closed down Gym.and it was only after he died that philly decided to give him a statue.and it isnt the first time Philly has shunned their world champion,After winning the world title sonny liston came back to his home town of philly and expected the heroes welcome a champion deserves.when he got off the plane,nobody was there.Philly has a reputation of neglecting their hometown heroes but praising a fictional character in Rocky.

I like the question "are you embarrassed?" we all too often seem to love stepping on people who have achieved greatness when they're down. 99 percent of the people on the planet at that time would have had no business stepping in a ring with George Foreman, and here's a guy who's defeated Muhammad Ali, he loses to another great fighter and he should feel embarrassed to leave the house? That question just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Completely agree. That question pissed me off, even more because Joe is such a nice classy guy. If he had been arrogant or whining, it would have maybe been a fair question. But Foreman was like early Tyson, most people, good fighters, went down hard and early. And Joe at least got up again. Knocked down but not out.

I had an opportunity to meet Joe Frazier in Tulsa, Oklahoma when he sang and had a band. I got to sit in his dressing room with him and have a drink for about an hour after his show. I read alot of the comments and I can assure he was one of the classiest athletes I had ever met. As a American, not only because he was an Olympic gold medal winner and a heavyweight champion, we should honor his journey from humble beginnings. I never saw anything from him, even after all his victories, of not being the classiest heavyweight of all times. RIP Joe and thanks for that special time spent together.

I know talking bad about Clay/Ali gets many people in a rage, but I'll never forgive what that guy did to Joe Frazier. It wasn't about "head games" or "hype." It was an endless barrage of horrible, devastating insults. Frazier exhibited class time and again throughout his life, and he didn't deserve one bit of that crap spewed by Clay/Ali. I encourage every fight fan to go read about it - read how many times he insulted Frazier and the actual terms he used, and the hateful, condescending tone. I celebrated every loss Clay/Ali had after that.

Ali apologized to Joe for maybe taking promotion of his fights too far he apologized several times, in public and tried 2 privately but all jealous bitter Joe chose to hold on to his jealousy and his bitterness and NEVER DID apologize to Ali for his low class way he treated Muhammad.

Ali'd throw any such ridiculous thing out - not because Ali believed any of it - but because Ali believed in SELLING fights. Now he's the template for the Nick Diaz's, the Conor McGregor's - the Nate Diaz's et al. "Raise Hell during the pre-fight buildup/ publicity." It's why we wanted to see Cowboy fight Conor - i.e. their hysterical press conference together. "I'll bend your ass over - KNOCK the Lucky Charms out of y'all." (Cowboy to Conor a couple years back). I was only 6 in 1973 so I knew very little of Frazier. He was not fighting when I became a fan. I stumbled onto this clip and must say this guy appears to be a class act, humble, and with a great sense of humor... What a great time in boxing - and really cool how Benny and Cosby played into his sharing of his story of his fight!!!

@theloosegoose333 Muhammad started it when he called Joe an uncle tom before their first fight, at the time they were friends, but Muhammad ruined that friendship to make a few more bucks. When Joe called him Clay, it was a response to 'uncle tom' and a way of promoting the fight even further. They promoted the fight into being the fight of the century, and lost a friendship in the process, but Muhammad threw the first stone!

Ali also called himself pretty while referring to Joe as a gorilla. When their careers were done, Ali gave a sincere apology both in private and publicly. They also became friends. Joe cried when Ali passed away.

Smokin Joe Frazier. A real gentleman, he kept going. The heart of a Champion that I have always admired and respected. I always found it sad that Ali and Frazier didn't get along very well during their prime. It was years later that they straightened out their differences, which even made me feel better as well. I think that Ali pumped himself up more by being loud and walking that line that raises eyebrows. The game of Heavy Weight Boxing has never been the same since Ali, and Frazier are out of the sport. RIP Joe
