Jimmy had the skills but never the size or strength of a natural heavyweight to deal with the likes of Smokin' Joe. What struck me about this rematch was the courage of Jimmy Ellis. Simply getting back into the ring with this guy after the first fight and giving everything he had said it all. Jimmy was a Warrior.

For me, Joe Frazier was the most exciting fighter ever! While boxing's Golden Age was dominated by Ali, Frazier, and Foreman, the tier right below them was excellent, with many fighters - Ellis included - who could have been champions in other eras.

To reinforce what you are saying about the heavyweight division in the 1970s, I was watching a 1973 bout between Earnie Shavers and Jerry Quarry. Before the fight the announcer says: "Shavers is 46-2, with 45 of his 46 wins coming by knockout...18 coming in the first round. He's won 34 fights in a row. He is currently ranked SIXTH in the division." Unbelievable that kind of record got him ranked sixth among contenders at that time. (Of course Quarry was a decent fighter also and proceeded to knock out Shavers in the first round).

Always had the impression Joe held back on this one....Jimmy Ellis fought alot of top heavyweights, but considering he had Angelo Dundee in his cor er only helped about a quarter of the time. He was a blown-up middleweight with 5 losses when he made the jump. Call him and Patterson and Quarry heavyweights, but these guys were giving up 15-20 lbs. A fight, at least.

@sportshistorybuff
@sportshistorybuff 5 жыл бұрын
Those who want to argue that clutching and holding are legitimate parts of fighting need to ask themselves why Referee Bob Foster warns Ellis to stop doing that early in the fight? Thousands of referees have done the same thing over professional boxing's history. It is why Henry Akinwande was disqualified against Lennox Lewis, and why Ali's "victory" over Frazier in 1974 was so fraudulent. Professional boxing is about aggression, and clinging to your opponent is not aggressive, it is an avoidance of fighting which cheats both the opponent and the spectator.
@davidbrandel1311
@davidbrandel1311 4 жыл бұрын
sportshistorybuff several of Ali’s “victories” could not have been accomplished without his constant holding. I also think that Buster Douglas and Lennox Lewis were both aided by excessive holding against Mike Tyson. In Lewis’ case it was extreme, as he was not only holding Tyson, but leaning his entire body weight on him in the FIRST round. Anyone who has ever wrestled in high school or college could tell you how exhausting it is to try and free yourself from the grasp of an opponent that won’t let go. Getting back to Ali, I think he did more to ruin the sport of boxing by normalizing holding.

Like a lot of fans of heavyweight boxing I'm from Philly and a huge Joe Frazier, admirer. I'm 5'11 and I met Joe Frazier in 72 shook his hand and he wasn't as tall as me. For a small heavyweight he was Dynamite. With a huge heart. That second Ali fight in New York where Ali was holding him Ali should have been disqualified.. he held Frasier all night. But Joe was never going to be Foreman, Joe style was made for Foreman. In the old adage of a big heavyweight will be a a smaller heavyweight almost every time. Joe had nothing to be ashamed of what a great career. He was awesome, Rip Joe.

I’m not even sure why they matched Ellis with Joe Frazer. He was coming off loosing streaks & knockouts scores against him. So how can the commentators say he was one fight away to challenge for World Heavyweight Championship, when he was loosing to sub par opponents. For Frazer to fight Ellis was seen as a easy fight. He wanted a tune up fight & that was what it was. Frazer could’ve fought better opponents, but he did not want to take risks.

quality333 Frazier fought in a division that was at the time the deepest in its history. Fought Foreman and Ali multiple times both of which are top 4 of all time. Everybody here say that Ellis wath only the shadow of 1970,but what to say about Frazier?In 1975,if Ali "boxed" him,he would dominate him easily,but his strategy to "fight" him was almost suicide.
@blite13
@blite13 9 жыл бұрын
Frédéric Avalli you don't understand fighting. Joe put on pressure that MADE his opponents fight him. Ali couldn't just box him, he had to fight him. Same with Ray Leonard vs Duran in Montreal. Leonard had to FIGHT, Duran was just as fast as Ray that night and Ray had to fight. Same with Ali vs Frazier, Ali had to fight him, when your opponent can cutoff the ring as fast as you can move around the ring....you have no choice, you have to fight.
@fredericavalli
@fredericavalli 9 жыл бұрын
blite13 You think to be a specialist,so you will find an answer to my question:how the hell Ali beat Frazier (my idol anyway) or Leonard and Leonard beat Hagler?
@blite13
@blite13 9 жыл бұрын
Frédéric Avalli How did Ali beat Frazier? Watch the fight. How did Frazier beat Ali, watch the fight. Ray beat Marvin because he waited until Marvin's legs were shot before he would fight him. Ray beat Duran because Duran was so out of shape he could hardly throw a combo of punches and his foot work was horrible. In Montreal,Duran was just as fast as Ray. In '71, Joe was just as fast as Ali and Joe was a lot tougher than Ali thought he was. If you let a guy 'box' you and you are being outboxed, you deserve to lose. They way to beat a 'mover/boxer' is to make him fight. That's what Joe did, same with Duran, you saw the results.
@blite13

Frédéric Avalli Same way Marvin beat Hearns. If Marvin would have boxed Tommy, he loses. He made Tommy fight and it was a good strategy.

@fredericavalli 9 жыл бұрын
blite13 But he lost against Leonard.Hearns was K.O. after 3 rounds because he was overconfident and fought to K.O. Hagler in spite of boxing him:here too it was pure suicide.He could have danced at least 7 or 8 rounds winning several rounds,Hagler had always been a slow starter "studying" his opponents in the first 3 rounds,excepted the bums he could K.O in the very first round.
