I'm not sure about date - but looking at Mike Hyman (drums) who was 13 in 1967 when Joe signed with Milestone in San Francisco I think 1977 is right (anyway that's the information that was given to me). It was filmed by Swiss-Italian TV company andf later shown (in the 90's I believe) by the French TV channel Messo. So this looks like it's a tour date - Anyone got any more reliable info? Anyway here's the line-up: Steve Erquiaga - guitar; Ratzo Harris - bass; Mike Hyman - drums.( I believe these three guys were active in the Bay area around this time too.)

I'm no saxo expert and I have never heard of this guy maybe because I'm younger but he is without a doubt in my mind among the best... Coltrane, Shorter, Dex Gordon, Rollins, and the other Sonny. Great music, nothing else to add

Joe Henderson recorded a LOT. By all means find as much as you can and check him out. He's one of the most consistently exciting players ever.

I come back here a few times a year when I need to watch and listen to a true artist, when I need to recharge batteries, when I'm down or simply when I want to have a great time. Thelonious Monk, Joe Henderson and Dexter Gordon live are the best medicine for the soul there is, and it's all right to be addicted!

What a compliment to Joe!! The first time I heard Joe was on Horace Sliver's "Song For My Father". This was about the same time I heard him with Lee Morgan on the Sidewinder. I liked him then and I'm still as impressed as ever. His solos are so lyrical and so well "thought out". What a blessing to be able to hear such giants!!

Steve Erquiaga is a pretty cool dude, I met him a few years ago and he showed me a few chord ideas that I was able to work into my bag of tricks. I'll always be thankful for that. Joe Hen is so unique, love it.

Proof of the strength of Henderson's compositional skills; a song like "Recorda Me" can sound just as amazing in this configuration as it did on "Page One" fourteen years earlier.

There was an obscure alley club we saw Joe at in S.F. at around that time. It was called Gold Street, just below Broadway, a couple blocks from the El Matador, a great Broadway club. Several blocks away was Keystone Korner. Those were great nights! Now the great room we heard Joe is called Bix, and they still feature live jazz. It seems that This date was probably filmed in Italy.

jazzaheadandbehind that’s Ratzo Harris and the young all star drummer. I know these cats. They were all in San Fran. His rhythm was young and super bad and picked by Joe. He was talking them for awhile.

Joe was such a sound musician. He was fearless and so exciting saxophonist. The tenor saxophonists of today make me nuts in how 99% of them just copy Trane, Brecker or Rollins. But Joe was totally his own man.

I love the distinctive wail he has in some of his stock phrases. The buttery timbre certainly adds to his elegant playing. It's all so f- - - -ing visceral.

Yes, it is 1977, probably around March: it was then when I saw this same quartet at the Bergamo Jazz festival, in northern Italy; from there to Lugano, Switzerland, where this set was probably recorded, its about an hour by car.

Fine comeback. I could post any video of Lovano that displays his incomparable time, articulation, sound, language, ideas, musicality, etc. but for some reason I doubt you would listen to it. It's funny when someone thinks they've figured it out, when they are really just missing out.

I think the sonority of Joe henderson's tenor was better in playing old instruments than new ones. So this sounded very comfortable to me.

Joe Henderson is an absolute master. Masterful sound, time, language, and concept. Truly one of the greatest. But it is NOT true that he is the last great improviser. Someone who believes Joe Lovano has an "obvious dislike for melody" seems like the one whose relatively new to this.

@kwamegeez When Joe plays it with that intro, and at this slightly faster tempo, he quite often called it as its revised name, "no me esqueca", as opposed to its original title, "Recordame".

@docsaxman

MrPartidoalto Joe plays a lot more harmonic changes than Wayne. Wayne is a personal voice but Joe sets a standard of playing changes in a new way that influenced Michael Brecker, Jerry Bergonzi, Branford Marsalis and myself. Wayne also influenced all of us yet it’s clear that Joe is a thinking harmonic man and Wane went a different way. For study Joe is one of THE go to cats.
