Post -match interviews and prizegiving. Joe shows he's a genuine champion, with great respect for Steve Davis. Steve shows how to be gracious in defeat - always try to be a good loser, it doesn't mean you have to like it... I know this, having lost a few finals myself...

Snooker was amazing in the 80’s and what a great presenter David vine was, great times 👍

I remember this happening, because of the crowd reaction to Joe's win. What I didn't realise was that Joe Johnson made the most gracious winner's speech afterwards. He was the epitome of a champion, and I showed it to my son so he could see what a true champion is. Both Joe and Steve should be proud of themselves in the gracious way they acted.

Brilliant from both players. Joe Johnson was a great winner. He won this title out of the blue, had a poor season then rocked up at the Crucible in '87 and nearly won it again.

To see the look on Joe's face a mix of hey I'm world champion and how the hell did I just do that, such a down to earth guy,as an out and out potter Joe is right up there with Ronnie ,judd trump and another guy who was an amazing potter Steve James, but everyone loved an underdog and wanted Joe to win especially me as after he beat Terry Griffith's I believed his name was on the trophy and put £5 on him to win at odds of 25/1 pity it wasn't the 150/1 lol

What a sweet celebration. So nice to see all that affection being displayed. I remember seeing this in match in 1986, unlucky for Steve Davis, but a really deserved World Title win from Joe Johnson.

I'm glad Joe bigged up Steve at the end. They say Joe was a flash in the pan, but he did get to the final the next year, where Steve made it 1-1.

Mark thank u so much for showing us this uploading it. I remember it well - how Joe gave his praise of Steve before he said anything else, it will live with me forever. Just also the way he won, he couldn't believe it, the way he sank the last few pots when he knew it was won. This is the definition of humility. And the icing on the cake was that the following season joe had a pretty bad year but then at the end of the season he came thru again to be in the final vs guess who - yes Steve Davis!!!

Great tribute from Joe to Steve after winning world title even though Steve didn't play to the high standard we all knew back then. But Joe played great whole championship & played better than an exhausted Steve Davis from his crushing quarter final & hard fought semi final over thorburn!

Joe was an absolutely worthy champion, anyone who thinks he was a fluke winner should take a look at his brilliant play throughout the championship. He spoke magnificently, as did the great Steve who took defeat with such grace, (despite the slimy idiocy of the awful David Vine).

Remember it well... as a teenager I was watching it with my mum, who after two failed marriages with Yorkshiremen always held something against them. She automatically took a disliking to Joe and was rooting for Steve, but after this interview she said, "What a lovely man."

Joe deserved to win and played brilliantly but Steve's game was in tatters in the final session and he placed no pressure on Joe. None of that was Joe Johnson's fault, Joe kept potting the balls and Steve kept missing the balls. If ever there was a fairy tale win, Joe Johnson defeating the (then) world number one Steve Davis has to rank as one of the greatest upsets and wins against insurmountable odds in sporting history! What is perhaps even more remarkable is that Joe Johnson remains the nearest man to ever defend the world title after a first world title win. Joe clearly had a lot of respect and admiration for Steve and it showed in his winner's speech. "I got away with it today", who would have thought Joe would be standing there uttering these words 17 days after the tournament began!

By the look on Steve's face you can tell how pissed off he was especially after losing the year before when he lost on the black ball to Dennis Taylor and that spured him on to win three successive world championships in a row. 87. 88 & 89.

2 successive defeats for Davis from far lower ranked players, and he lost to Tony Knowles in 1982s first round, Davis wasn't indestructible. Joe Johnson was 150/1 for that success 😊

Wayne Holnes Johnson reached the World championship final the year after losing 18-14 to Davis so a bit harsh to call it a fluke. The long format of the world championships usually means the best player wins. He reached 2 successive Embassy finals and that takes some doing
