I think the better way to look at it is that Bill was trying to think best long term interest of the team. He had 2 great QBs. Use them.
@johnre5342 Жыл бұрын
Not really…bill admitted making a mistake by using 2 qbs because it wasn’t working and ONLY when Mike Holmgren told him to make a choice , and it was Montana , did the team start doing great again. The real reason was when Montana broke his back in 1986 and then got blasted by jim Burt of the giants to end that season…..Walsh traded for young in 1987 because he thought Montana would not recover and his career would be over….Montana made a full recovery and won the Super Bowl in 1988 in bill Walsh’s last game.

@@JeffRoss1122Brady played in Joe Montana's era he would have maybe two super bowls. You could take the quarterback and smash them into the ground there was no throwing the ball away, receivers could be pressed and pull the entire time down the field. That's why you're able to have quarterbacks with small stature right now. Steve Young retired early because of hits in the helmet and concussions but he was still very young as well and could have kept playing if he wanted to Also don't forget if the Seahawks run the ball on the one yard line they win, Atlanta just runs the ball and milks the clock and makes it impossible that's another one That in the tuck rule there's never been somebody to spend more Lucky in their life

The 1988 to 1990 teams were an absolute a cheat code. It started with Montana throwing passes to Jerry “the 🐐” Rice along with John Taylor (all 1980s team, 2x Pro Bowler, 1x 2nd team All Pro), Brent Jones (4x Pro Bowler, 2x 2nd team All Pro), and Roger Craig (first 1000 yard rusher & receiver, 1x OPOY, 1x All Pro, 4x Pro Bowler). If Montana went down, Young (7 straight Pro Bowls, 3 straight 1st team All Pros, 3x 2nd team All Pro, 1x OPOY, 2x MVP, HOFer) was ready to step in. And the o-line was solid with Jesse Sapolu anchoring at center. Bubba Paris at left tackle (ranked in the top 100 tackles of all time) with Guy McIntyre at left guard (4 straight Pro Bowls) protecting the blind side. And we haven’t even stared on defense… Arguably the most talented and physical defensive back to ever play…Ronnie Lott. People forget how good he was. Besides the 10 Pro Bowls. Besides the reputation for toughness, backed up by stories like having part of a finger amputated so he wouldn’t miss a game. He made All Pro at Left Cornerback his rookie season. A few years later he was moved to Free Safety, where he proceeded to make 5 All Pros. That was impressive enough. Then, as he “slowed down” towards the end of his career, he was moved to Strong Safety. And he proceeded to make All Pro again. No other defensive back has done that. Then there was Charles Haley (5x Pro Bowl, 2x All Pro, over 100 sacks, 5x Super Bowl champ, HOFer). The rest of the defense was balanced between veterans like Michael Carter, Matt Millen, and Eric Right, along with youngsters like Bill Romanowski and Eric Davis. The kicking game was elite with Mike Cofer (1x All Pro)…this was before he completely fell apart. And let’s not forget the legendary coaches and coordinators; Bill Walsh, George Seifert, Dennis Green, Ray Rhodes, Mike Holmgren, Sherman Lewis, and Jon Gruden. They led the team to back-to-back 14-2 seasons capped with Super Bowl victories. And it would have been a 3rd straight if not for that hit on Montana (losing out on making a Super Bowl because of a hit on our QB, hmmm, sounds familiar). Top 3 defense year after year after year, even though they were considered to be an offensively led team. An entire offensive scheme, the “West Coast Offense” was born from these teams.

Maybe, maybe not. People forget that in 1990, the Niners were terribly one dimensional. You have two big personalities that want to be THE MAN at QB for the 49ers. Steve Young was begging to be the starter while Steve was the established guy. I could understand wanting to unload Joe because he got hurt a lot and the 49ers wanted the young guy in Steve Young. That Leonard Marshall hit was the excuse to put Steve in and that elbow injury in 91 really hurt Joe's chances. Steve wanted to prove himself as the man. It took until 1992 for Steve to actually have his hall of fame career, but Joe still had it. In 93 he took the Chiefs to the AFC Championship.

Montana had half a back by the time this was happening. We all love him in SF, he's an all-time great for a reason, and he was obviously a competitor but his time as #1 was quickly running out. Maybe the Niners make 3 SBs in a row with no Steve Young starts but there is no way, after that extra usage, that Montana is beating the Cowboys in the 90s. And without that experience in the 80s, Young probly doesn't take them to the SB in 94. It's a business at the end of the day.
@johnre5342 Жыл бұрын
The 49ers would have had a better chance beating the cowboys in the 90s than with Steve young. To support my argument is that Steve young never played well vs the cowboys in the early 90s. Although the 49ers were 3-3 vs Dallas in those years young was 2-3 while Elvis Grbac blew the cowboys out in 1995. Young played poorly in the big 1994 nfc championship game and only won because of 3 straight turnovers by the cowboys spotting the 9ers 21 points in the 1st qtr. young went 13 of 29 in that game for only 155 yds. And in the 1992 championship young had 3 turnovers. Joe don’t play like that in big games.

And people think Bill Belechick was ruthless lol. Walsh, the person, was a really nice, well spoken guy. Walsh was told in an interview that Paul Brown was sabotaging his job search to be a Head Coach after being passed over for the head coaching job of the Cincinnati Bengals. "The word going out on you isn't so good, Bill. People are hearing you're great with X's & O's, but you're not a leader." (Sound familiar?) Walsh felt a deep sense of betrayal. He left the Bengals and headed West. We beat the Bengals almost all the time in those days. Now we can't beat KC at all. Joe Montana on KC team still beat the Steve Young led 49ers team that went on to win a Superbowl that year. 3 decades has passed since. Curses might really exist. The Sins of the Father shall be bestowed upon the children. What Paul Brown did to Walsh made the 49ers the team of the 80s. What Walsh did to Montana made the Chiefs crown their dynasty on us. Thank God I got to see Superbowl 29 live as a kid and was aware enough about it to appreciate it. None of these kids will ever see us win another superbowl if these curses are true. Curse of the great bambino? Yeah, these things exist. Notice how 1994 was our last, and Steve's, only Superbowl victory? Notice how the loss of Garrison Hearst stopped the last run Steve had for another Superbowl ring? (And was the start of the Madden Curse because Garrison Hearst was on the Cover) Notice how Mr. D was forced to give the team to his sister? Notice how our current owner said, "We don't raise NFC Championnship banners, we hang superbowl banners", then says "It's not a complete failure to not win."? We might have a curse. I don't recall Mr. D ever flip-flopping like that. We were promised Jed would strive for a Superbowl and to hold him accountable when he doesn't. So bye bye to that pipe-dream. At this point I just hope we get lucky. We have all the talent in the world and still can't win a Superbowl with a head coach who's allergic to running the ball in the 2nd half. Walsh would have had back to back superbowl wins by now with this amount of talent on this team and would have loved Brock Purdy. You know how I know? Because Andy Reid is a branch of the Bill Walsh coaching tree. Kyle Shanahan took CJ Bethheard without even attending Patrick Mahomes's pro-day at the 2017 draft. And we wonder why the Chiefs have gone undefeated against us since Mahomes became the starter. Rant over.

I trust Paul Brown. He saw something in him for him to turn away. The 80s were great in football. You were the best in that time. Marino was great also but you played football. You played, Giants, Washington, Minnesota, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta. Tough men tough defense. It was unfair. You gave it all. Took the hits. You were so good sometimes it seemed like it was easy for you. I like Staubach also. They screwed him. Staubach was great. Successful in anything he does or did. But Bradshaw. Great. I thank God. I got to watch Joe in the 80s and 90. One last thing. Don Shula is the greatest coach in history of the NFL. Most wins. 2 Sb. Perfect season. It's just the truth. Deal win it. Chuck Noll sp. Second.

The more I learn about the situation and the more I hear Joe Montana talk the more I lose respect for him in his level of leadership. Maybe it was Bill Walsh's fault. I think they wanted to use a good quarterback to light a fire under Joe montana, the problem is they were using a quarterback that was actually better than Joe montana. The only reason they didn't win more with Steve Young is because the controversy created a divided team. It wasn't until they fully bought into Steve that they put up one of the most dominant Super Bowl runs ever.

Manning couldn’t run, Brees was more of an all around QB so he is up there, Elway could run too albeit not very athletic with his pigeon toe stride but he also threw alot of INTs, Graham..again played in a much slower less athletic league. Marino couldn’t run either…so that leaves Young, Brees..I would take Young.

To this day, I get upset when I see Steve Young who I happen to love & respect playing while Joe was on the bench. But that’s what made Walsh the TRUE GENIUS he was! It helped both players. One (Joe) learned to be humbled, Steve learned how sweet the starting position was and how difficult of a role the starting QB has in a football team and we won. We won SUPER BOWLS during Joe’s era AND prepared Steve well enough what Joe moved onto KC (which broke every niner fan’s heart), we learned to love Steve Young & won the 94/95 SUPERBOWL which to this day is the last time this team was excellent. THE LAST TIME MAN! We’ve been patiently waiting for over 19 years for another ring & it hasn’t happened yet! Who knows how much longer we got to wait for ring #6 man…
