United is responsible to make sure there are enough seats for every paying passenger. United Overbooked the flight, in order to extract as much money out of each flight.

fitztastico lol, I want you to stop and think about what you just said. You don't care about their legal rights.... Do you REALLY think that mindset makes much sense, if any, at all? Further, by "right" I'm referring to what the contract says, which is likely one of the key governing documents here. Along those lines, I would like you to explain, and, perhaps, justify the passenger's response. If he simply listened to the police, this entire situation would have not escalated, yes?

Maybe wherever he needed to be, his REASON for purchasing a ticket for a specific departure to a particular place to arrive as close as possible at a designated time, maybe that plan of his was worth MORE than $800 and a hotel room. Since the airline's offer seems so absolutely irresistible to you, MAYBE you can imagine that ANOTHER passenger on that plane would have been JUST as impressed with it as you are. And if there wasn't ANYBODY onboard working with your set of thinking skills, perhaps it should have occurred to the airlines to DOUBLE or TRIPLE the offer until they had a taker, since it was SO important to them that they just HAD to resort to violence. NOW it's going to cost them WAY more than $800 and the staff members STILL didn't achieve their arrival goals. GROW a set.

It wasn't an oversold flight, where there were not enough seats for the paying customers. This plane was full. Simply full. United wanted to kick out the paying customers to accommodate their own staff. This man will have legal standing to sue because of that little fact. Not to mention the unnecessary force, bodily harm, false imprisonment, mental distress and what ever else happened off camera. I hope this little show of force was worth it to United Airlines. This will cost them multi millions if not a billion dollars after the settlement, drop in stock and boycott.
@selmaave9145
@selmaave9145 7 жыл бұрын
Right. If this were an oversold situation, the 4x people that didn't have seats would have simply not been able to fly if no one on-board was willing to give up their seats. This was actually a semi-emergency situation created by United trying to get their employees to another airport for an assignment. If this had been treated that way, they could have offered boarded passengers huge incentives and cash money until 4x volunteered to get off the plane.
@lunaticfringe896
@lunaticfringe896 7 жыл бұрын
K L Actually, no, you are not correct. United had the legal right to tell a passenger they have to get off the plane, even if said passenger is in his/her seat. Read the fine print, it's part of the contract. Further, it wasn't United staff that removed this passenger, it was the police department. There could be a lawsuit against United, but it has nothing do to with what you said.

Lunatic Fringe I'm not a lawyer and I haven't read United's terms and conditions so I don't know (or care) if United were within their legal rights to remove this passenger. What I do know is that this guy was treated terribly by a company that he had paid money to and that is a disgrace. United may or may not face a massive payout to this guy but even if they avoid that, the biggest cost to them will be in the public backlash against them and then also the possibility that a company like Air BNB will see this and recognise that there is a prime opening there for an airline that just provides a basic, decent and honest service to their passengers, rather than think of them as punching bags.

Heroic Love: That's a silly irrelevant argument especialy when it comes to planes, the seatbelts don't do much but add "security theater" when your planes going crashing down. (TofS) are being abused! and when there are only a handful of "choices" in a vital public sector it Gives the Corporation's Immensely Unfair Power & Control to Gang up and continually screw over the consumer more & more, little by little, raising costs and lowering service, so that it happens gradually & people just accept it. It's a race to the bottom rather then the top. It's simular to the very few ISP's in America, they can Write There Terms of Service to be So Anti-Consumer because there's no regulations & no other Options. So Consumers Have No Choice, There so Established & Protected in an Industry that Competition by Starting a New Buisness is Nearly Impossible because of the Insanely High Cost & Logistics. It's like David vs Goliath and Goliath is a Blackhole sucking up any competitors. It's why the law had to be made that Forced the Telecommunications Giants to Share the Existing Tower's so that in theory company's can't Bully Customers with No other Options. The only reason that was passed was because people didn't want 4 Cell Phone Tower's in there Town, When 1 can accomplish the same function and isnt as ugly as 4. Lets be Honest, in certain Critically Important Industry's where a Few Corporation's have grown unregulated & have unchecked Power, they act like a unfair Monopoly and Innovation Slows/Stops and Price Gouging Occurs and that greatly hinders our Economy. Whenever this internal shift to Competition for Maximum Profit over customer satisfaction occurs the public looses.
@IceColdProfessional
@IceColdProfessional 7 жыл бұрын
Kyle Shebilske Okay wtf does that rant have to do with this guy being a selfish jerk that didn't want to get off the plane? The seat belt analogy went completely over your head. And btw, corporations are people. If you can justify the $1800 a year it costs to keep it open, having a corporation is an extremely valuable vehicle to avoid paying ridiculous amounts in taxes. But I digress. That man was offered $400, then offered $800 plus a hotel to get off. After being asked nicely to get off, he was dragged off screaming and yelling. This kind of whiny victim mentality is why this country I'm almost there getting weaker and losing its standing in the world.

This is also what happens when you have customer service agents who don't use good judgement. I am a former gate agent for a major airline (12 years) and worked overbooked flights almost daily. United Airlines/Continental hires people who do not use their customer service skills; when you combine bad customer service and bad judgement, this is what you get. Same with the bad judgement on the brilliant idea of some gate agent who denied boarding to the 2 girls with leggings! Unbelievable.

The CEO of United won the "best communicator" award last month. During this incident I can see he clearly communicated to all American that how bad United Airline had become, how ruthless they treated their customers and how unapologetic they are toward any of their wrong doings. His message to all of our citizens are loud and clear: their crew's priorities absolutely trump any of passengers. Even you are a doctor trying to save lives, you are no competition against their crews who shouldn't be there so late at the first place. Yup, we have to thank the CEO for his great communication which woke millions of American to the horrible reality of today's airline industry. He should get another award for tanking his own company in order to wake us up. This is great sacrifice of him and all United's stock holders. Area of improvement: please, the "oversold" theory cannot trick a 5 year old. So next time he need to tell a better lie. P.S.: Last year there were 34,000 passengers got bumped off or kicked out of their flights. Incidents like this will happen again. It's only matter of time. So before traveling, we all need to be prepared for unfair treatment from the TSA, airline and the government. Don't expect other airlines will have better attitude. Just take it like a man, no, I mean take it like a dog and don't bark. You will be just fine.
@Pfromm007

They've gone too far this time. The airline simply shouldn't have had such a ridiculous and corrupt policy. You really think this wasn't going to happen sooner or later? If that man had gotten off, the airline would simply continue to extort passengers from the flights they rightfully deserve to be on.

Customer service is very questionable with Airlines - their attitude from ticket counter to attendances is rude. United I am sure has shot themselves in the foot with allowing this behavior and many many people will find other Airline to travel.

During a flight to Asia all passengers on our flight were given the option over the intercom to accept free round trip tickets to anywhere in the continental U.S along with accommodations at a 5 star hotel, free meals and a $20 per person credit towards any purchases at the hotel in exchange for waiting until the following day to take our connecting flight from Japan, due to overbooking. We jumped on the opportunity, were given two rooms for my wife and I and two teenage children at one of the nicest hotels we ever stayed in. The meals were excellent, the staff went out of their way to accommodate us and we used the free round trip tickets to fly to San Diego the following year. We considered it one of the best deals we were ever given. I can't understand why United didn't offer a similar deal to get volunteers rather than use brute force?

Should you be more clear about the reason he is being removed, and then let us judge if you had the right to do it or not?

4:55 "They could have gotten an Uber. It will end up costing them significantly less" Anyone want to take a stab at how much an Uber ride from Chicago to Louisville really costs? I'll give you all a hint, it's not what the guy is implying when he says it will be cheaper.

It was NOT overbooked. It was mismanagement in getting crewmembers to their next flights.

It shouldn't matter whether he's a doctor or a trash collector. No paying passenger should be treated that way.

Flight wasn't over booked, just a bunch of United employees without bookings put on plane in preference to those already accepted and on plane.

The more information that comes comes out, the more damning it is for UA. Passengers interviewed on CNN are now saying that another passenger who was also selected for de-planing was asked to leave (and refused) before Dr. Dao did the same thing. Yet he was the one targeted for forced removal. If that is true, UA has some explaining to do. They've continuously misrepresented the facts of this incident. Shareholders need to hold Munoz's feet to the fire until they get answers.

First of all, it was a crew with pilots who needed to get to work, crews are always space positive, meaning that they get preference over passengers, of course in coach. If no passengers volunteer to give up their seat, and by the way United was offering $800.00 per person for the inconvenience. The lowest ticket purchased is taking off the plane. The crew has to go to work in order to get passengers to their destination. However this usually happens before the flight is boarded. No one on any Airline is taking off the plan with out monitory compensation.

So it's worth 4 x $800 to get the crew to where they needed to go. How much business did UAL lose? How much to charter a plane to move the crew 300 miles?

Why can't they charge the officers involved? If they were following their training they would know that what they did is not included in it. They are not allowed to attack people just because they are in an airport!???? The man is not doing anything illegal, violent, nor is he drunk or causing distress to other passengers, even when he is set upon he is clearly trying to defend himself until they smash his face into the seat at which point he is clearly dazed, possibly concussed. Joe needs to explain that comment and what it it is that makes him believe that these officer shouldn't be charged. Yes the job is hard, but this is the reason why it is hard. Making the right choice is part of the job and knowing when someone is asking you to do something that is against your training is part and parcel with it. Finally taking responsibility and facing the consequences of your actions is also the responsibility of the individuals involved not just the airline. If the root of the problem is not addressed how can anyone have hope for a better future.
