I was in a coffee shop in Freemantle Western Australia during the 1986 Americas Cup yacht race and met 2 Americans who decided because the racing was a rest and repair day they were going to hire a car and drive to Sydney for lunch and see the harbour bridge ! They would not believe me that driving to Sydney from Perth was 48 hours non stop, each way! I dont know how they got on, we parted ways with a handshake and a good luck from me!😅 I have no doubt that when hiring a car they were met with uncontrollable laughter! 😂🤣

I used to drive trucks interstate in Australia and sat down one day and worked out that i had completed over 850 trips to Sydney & back from Brisbane over a 15 years period. In that same 15 year period i had done Brisbane to Townsville & return roughly 130 odd times and Brisbane to Melbourne return probably about 200 times. I reckon I've clocked up about 3 million kilometres around Oz. The difference is most of the US (outside some parts of the west and southwest) are populated with towns and connecting roadways with regular stops of cicvilozation every 40-50 miles or so, even in the rural parts. Australia on the other hand has like 2 or 3 populated areas around the coastline and then mounds and mounds of nothingness. Bot countries are actually very similar in size and scope. As an Aussie we shouldnt brag too much about the long drives in Aus as USA is just as big with a lot more ppl in between. Its good to hear a familiar accent on the JRS but.

WA is insane. I live in Darwin, right at the very top of Australia, but it doesn't seem as isolated as some of those towns in the Kimberley or over on the Gulf. There is no way I would drive the 3000+ km to Adelaide but people do it - truckies are a rare breed.

Half an hour to my local store for milk on a dirt pothole ridden road. Further for work and school. Dirt dirt dirt. 2 hours to a shopping centre. I just drove 8 hours straight to care for me elderly mother. 16 hour round trip every 6 weeks. My son spends 1.5 hours on a bus, in the bush to get to school. Yep it’s 100kms not miles, to anywhere in Oz. But how lucky are we!

Travelling around Europe and telling people how big Australia is, some get it, most don't. Some of them try to compare it to driving from Edinburgh to London... I just smile because no amount of explanation will get them to understand it until they do it themselves.

We talk about building a high speed rail to connect Australia. What if we just made a 4 lane road with barriers to protect from animals getting on and had no speed limit? It would make a big difference in travel time being able to do 200 instead of 110 if you're going from Perth to Adelaide and what not. It would also be a lot cheaper than making a high speed rail line.
@sdm605410 ай бұрын
No, no it wouldn't be cheaper. Those roads are expensive to build and expensive to maintain. Germany spends a lot of time and money maintaining the autobahn. Both would be crazy expensive to build and keep running, there are no cheap options for Australia.

The animals need to be able to cross roads. The consequences of reducing or increasing the number of animals in certain areas can have catastrophic effects to the landscape.

Western Australia is about 1/3 of Australia. The capital city of western Australia (Perth) is the most remote city on the planet. The closest city to Perth is not in Australia it's in South Africa 😂. Australia is a fkn big country with a shit load of desert and fk load of things that are trying to kill you. Im just glad we don't have Bears, Drop Bears on the other hand 😂.
@batubop65110 ай бұрын
I always grew up with conflicting statements about this, it seems the dispute depends on city population/classification and how the distance is measured as in flight path, roads, or straight line on a map etc. So just to play geek, Google is saying Adelaide is the closest city if judged by 1mil+ population (2,136km). If under 1 mil, Denpasar City, Bali is then the second closest (2,580km). But for actual capital cities by flight, the closest is Jakarta (3,012km) followed by Singapore(3,912km). In general Perth is closer to several Indonesian cities than most Australian ones! A dab of Vegemite on your nose keeps the drop bears at bay, stay safe.

My only conditions were they pay for fuel & buy me a few beers when settled in Darwin. Because a proper tow for their car from there would have cost a shitload. They never contacted me after.
