I have a brother whose behavior has changed significantly ever since a rash of incidents he was involved in, including a few street fights and a four-wheeler accident. He used to be a great hockey player, full of spunk, great with the ladies, protective over me and my sister, funny as hell and just the best big brother. Now he's been depressed for years, suffers from paranoia, can't hold a job, struggles with eating and his sleep cycle is way out of whack. He ended up in a psych ward for a few weeks after an episode where he just stopped eating to the point where he couldn't get out of bed without our dads help. They doped him up on meds which kind of helped but really only masked what was really going on. This podcast has given me hope that maybe, just maybe there is something out there that can help see what is going on in my big brothers head, and possibly help get him back to even 75% of his normal self. I now have hope thanks to Cat for being vocal about her injury and her struggles.

Still dealing with some of my military career PTSD (and I got out in 1999). Doing MUCH better but chased a lot of "remedies" over the years as well.. some work (meditation), some don't. Thank you for being so open about this Cat. Wish I could give you a hug and let you know you're not alone, but I'll just wish you (and your son) nothing but the best.

@Vpzoe10 ай бұрын
@universesixhit642 I don't mind at all. If there was one thing I could only do from this day forward, I'd take meditation in a heartbeat. Supposedly, it's the only thing that can physically improve the structure of the brain. At 1st, I could only manage a minute or 2. Now, a 34-minute session is regular, and there's a noticeable difference in my day if I do it or not. A calmer, more stable foundation to my emotions and thoughts throughout the day, if that makes sense. Minimal alcohol, good diet, hydrating... and smiling as often as possible. (Fake it til you feel it 😁 )

I'm not sure if Joe Rogan even reads all of these comments or not, but here goes nothing... While watching this... I emotionally fell apart. I was on my break at work, pulled up this clip and the next thing I know I was balling my eyes out. I wasn’t ready for this! I'm a career veteran dealing with PTSD while simultaneously trying to help others find the courage to seek help, and educate those around me by dispelling the stereotypes that tend to dominate this topic. This interview absolutely broke my heart in that it's the best, most raw description of what me and so many in this circle have experienced!!! In listening to Cat I relived things I thought I had put to bed. I could see the faces of others I know in the fight. It's not all encompassing as everyone's experiences are there own but she absolutely nailed what me and many in my circle have struggled to express. I’ve learned that trying to explain what you are feeling is one of the most monumental obstacles for many to overcome. Which oddly, is one of the essential first steps in healing!? In many cases YOU know what you are feeling, but it’s so hard to put it into words and feel heard or acknowledged. For many, this compounds the confusion. It compounds the fear. It compounds the shame and makes you feel further broken. For many who are supposed to be “tough” (especially guys and fighters) this is manifested as anger and in turn spirals towards depression (if you're not already there!) or worse. Just in dissecting my issues I've discovered there are levels to each of the common or consistent symptoms. Like with fighters, military members are conditioned to "Succeed at all cost!'' Anyone with that Self Sacrifice mentality really. So for me, the "Gas pedal/ adrenaline" aspect was on point! That was my life for the last 10 years! The aspect of being present but not recollecting anything to the final moment before "GO!" then the panic that ensues because you're lost so you hit the gas harder and just try and “be first!”, absolutely resonated with me! EVERY facet of what she described just hit my psyche. I mean literal mouth open, jaw dropped, stunned! This completely touched me, but again, broke my heart. I hate this disorder and that so many suffer in silence so I try and advocate for them but I never considered the fight community in all my contemplation of who to relate the condition to. With one of the biggest misconceptions of PTSD being "Who" it affects, through my journey I've continually increased the demographic to go as far as encompassing the 7 year old who just lost a pet but somehow missed the fight community. With knowing several local fighters and having been one (decades ago) I never considered or realized the correlation. Never again though! Thank you for prompting this discussion Mr Rogan and thank you Ms Zingano for such an open and absolutely raw representation of your struggle. Many of our struggles! I tuned into this clip because I've always had a respectable "thing" for Cat Zingano. Never in a hundred years did I expect to be shook to my core like this. If you are still reading this comment and you have someone in your life struggling with PTSD I ask that you share this clip with them. See what they think and if any of this resonates with them? There is no single catch all fix for PTSD, nor are there any two people suffering in the exact same way. But everyone's story can help another. There's always someone who can relate to Your situation. I’ve been dedicatedly studying and researching this topic and STILL this caught me and triggered an emotional response. Most importantly, it further inspired me to do more! For me and anyone else who I can bring on this journey. Thank you Cat Zingano! And thank you Joe Rogan! This is going in my toolkit.

She is so incredibly beautiful it hurts. Rooting for her now as a BA fighter, and just as a person. Cat, you will never read this..but I have the same issues from PTSD and many of the things you describe going through are exactly me. I have tried every way you can imagine, including being hypnotized(Didn't work🤣), just to force myself better. I'm going to look into this therapy now that you have used it, this could really help someone listening. Thank you for bravely sharing your truth, and showing me that we are never truly alone in our struggles. It could always be worse, and it won't get better with inaction. Mental illness can create a daily struggle to find a sense of peace..inside your own thoughts. Working out, running, and getting myself physically exhausted has helped channel some of the symptoms. I'm tired of meds and endless trial and error..so here goes nothing! Anyone going through mental health issues, you are not alone, seek help, you got this.❤

Why cant people figure this out its hell of obvious. Once you fight or live through combat its not possible to go back to normal life. Your Brain is wired different, plus you’re relationship to society changes. Society only sees feelings positive or negative. When you fight you have that dark energy. Makes you feel like you’re in a void.

You battle trying to balance trying to deny you have an issue vs. wait why am I on a roller coaster and what is wrong with me. When you are young or an elite athlete, it is hard to admit you are not all there with TBI. One took my eye sight in my left eye for a week. I had a head trauma caused by car accident, when I as 8. Some months only moving my right arm. A lot of fisiotherapy, OT, musictherapy, rehabilitation center... Some faith. Some time passes, my left arm comes back, listening to the radio, wanna pee, heey, hello legs. Gradually. . Yet at some point the recovery just stopped. I can't to this date play any musical instrument whatsoever (which is fully ironic by itself, because my father who caused the accident is a professional musician) I remember that before the accident my school's music teacher at the piano played some song and gave me a big drum which you hold laterally on your thigh to play it. I remember she instructed everybody with a certain rhythm, which I was the one able to do it + add something else to the mixture and go with the flow. I remember to this day the eye of approval she gave me and how fun that was. . After the accident I could barely hold the drum, while vertically on the ground. . Always the last guy picked in sports.... well. More recently attained to martial arts too. But (if you're commited you don't even allow yourself to think about it but, yea) yea, you miss the little silly things you know you would could do, and that make a lot of difference in the medium run, if not the fact that you just can't. At the least with the left side of the body in my case. Compromised coordination, compromised strength. . It's really a pity cause I really have (innate) passion for both of these arts. (in music I, never let myself go much in the proccess of creating it, cause I know for me it will be of no avail. Many tries in different instruments, same result. Even as the passionate classical/metalhead I am) . Well... Drama pause. Just want to say that the fear of checking in just to find out that you can't be fixed is VERY real. Aside from logistical/family reasons, is definetely a presence of why I didn't for so long. 24 years... Man. Yet, this gave me REAL hope for the first time in MANY years. Thank you Joe, thank you Cat. :')

Gaber820 yeah i definitely get it, but if someone gets lung cancer from smoking 2 packs a day, they probably shouldn't go back to smoking as soon as the cancer goes into remission... The only problem i have is the way she keeps acting like they know how to fix CTE now because most of those therapies aren't nearly as effective as she's letting on and are almost a placebo. I'm not mad at her haha, I understand it's easy to get excited about something you think can help you, but that gives some people false hope and can even keep some young people from realizing how serious CTE actually is.

I took a 2 gram dose of psilocybin mushrooms for a trip and it made me feel like my brain got a tune up. i had a speech impediment with pronouncing the letter r.now i can say it like the english do with a roll cos thats how im suppose to say it in my language norwegian. i also had a lack of what the psycologist call "super ego" that also fired up for the first time 25 years overdue.didnt develope that in my teens due to both a bit of aspergers and living in a very dominant subdued envoriment at home in my upbringing. i can hear songs better when I play them in my mind and nature and colors have gotten a slight richer hue to them. it seems that the psilocin in psycedelic mushrooms have fixed some things and tuned up some tings in my mind. maybe it can also redeem injured braincells due to trauma etc. im only guessing. but i read somewhere psilocin can create new neural paths. it sure makes sense to me.

I looked up the procedure and it's still experimental patent pending and not yet FDA approved. Even if it brings you back to apparent normality we don't just how long the remission will last. Like the boxing and football types of brain damage that can take a long time to cause physical and mental illness we don't know where these MMA fighters are going to end up even if they show no signs now. Cat already has considerable brain damage. That puts her at super risk if she gets hit again. Cat is great athlete and I love her. It would be devastating to me to see her end up a basket case or dead. Imagine her poor soon losing another parent.

She should’ve been given a rematch against Ronda. Dana protected Ronda because if she lost, his cash cow would dry up. Same with McGregor before he lost to Diaz.
@luvfreedom14704 жыл бұрын
Not how it works. The only person who gets an automatic rematch is a dethroned champion. Cat needed to win her fights after Ronda but she didn't.

She's right. Grew up boxing. Working white collar job. Loud noise triggers me. We have catlike reflexes that just starts itself. People who never fought don't get it.

I can completely sympathize with her plight I got into a car crash about 14yrs ago and got a really bad concussion and I had very similar symptoms for years after. The doctor tried putting me on antidepressants which just made it all worse. The drug had the effect of like flushing all my brain chemicals out and I was just dull for about 2 years. It was pure hell (like zero joy in life, no brain stimuli brought joy or sadness just DULL, no effect from good tasting food, sex, etc.) and thankfully my brain just naturally brought itself back after several years. I don’t wish that on anyone. Oddest effect out of all of it was my bowels, I’d go into it more but it’s TMI.

This girl is getting treatment for CTE and she keeps fighting. It's like a drug addict going to rehab while using drugs. If you get your pituitary gland smashed, no treatment will help you there.
@speedygonzales14112 жыл бұрын
I thought she retired because of her brain injury but she’s competing in Bellator. In the end it will get worse. CTE is no joke Probably she have no choice and need the money.

She is a good looking lady with a good personality that has had some bad luck in life with husband death and now brain issues. Being at the end of her career in fighting with maybe 2 or 3 years left to fight competitively she should quit while ahead and become a fitness model, gym owner or personality. She always had a rockin body in the ring and pretty sure if she ran a gym plenty of women would join because she has toughness, vulnerability and competed at the highest level.

I once hit my head on the concrete real hard. I was NOT knocked out, but I also was punch drunk afterwards. I started shaking after that. I was experiencing anxiety and startle reflex also. I just assumed I was getting old. I wasnt like this before. Now I know I have brain damage.

This is true. I got headaches and a few days latter I went to the hospital and got my head checked. It is documented. I have startle reflex problems. Can't control it. Not in fear. It is reflex.

8:00 Joe if you're surprised insurance won't cover it then welcome to American healthcare. I get the feeling that MMA is going to have lawsuits from its fighters like the NFL did to cover these kinds of injuries that are clearly sustained while participating in these sports and should be covered by insurance. M4A!

Cat is a beast. Could’ve beat Ronda and had all the skills to do so after finishing Pennington, Nunes and Tate she was on a hell of a run. She fucked up charging in on Ronda. Would love to see her with the belt one day. Shame when she smashed the current champ only a couple years ago.
