As a native brazilian-portuguese speaker, I can assure you that, although Mackenzie Dern speaks portuguese fluentely, she does have an accent when she speaks portuguese, sounding a little bit like a foreigner sometimes, and that's all good because she wasn't born here in Brazil anyway.
@levity903 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Do you think it's odd that she now speaks English with a portuguese accent?
@fredalt3 жыл бұрын
@@levity90 I think it's definetly weird, because even if she's spending her whole time together with brazilian-portuguese speakers, even if she was living on brazil,, her mother tongue would still be english, therefore she would be able to switch to it almost instantly. For those saying that when you move to another country, you pick up on their accent, I agree 1000%. When I moved to England I definitely started saying some words with a British accent. However, she speaks fluent Portuguese, and she moved to Brazil and probably 99.99% of the time spoke Portuguese. That should have almost no effect on her English, because why would you speak English to Brazilians when you speak Portuguese? Makes no sense

On another video about her accent someone explained that speaking portuguese 99.9% of the time worked different muscles in her tongue and mouth so when she switched back to english her 'English muslces' were underworked while her 'Portuguese muscles' were overworked leading her to pronounce english with her portuguese muscles. @BigUriel5 жыл бұрын
I know right she obviously didn't try that hard. That said the weight in system is bullshit and basically encourages fighters to rig the system by dehydrating for the weigh in and then actually fighting at a much heavier weight. Hello Joe Rogan, im a big fan of you here from Brazil. Just to help with the analisys, i heard she speaking portuguese, and she speaks perfect Brazilian Portuguese, her accent is perfect... What i think that happened was that she started to speak more and more portuguese and there are a tongue's position difference between portuguese and English, so the more your tongue get used speaking portuguese, the more you will get difficulties to go back and speak english again... Its because de muscles of the tongue and the way they are demmanded differently on these two languages... A similar thing should happen with the ears and the way your brain processes the sound. Portuguese have much less vocals sounds than english.. Hope i helped you guys with this point of view. Best regards from Brazil mates!

ill explain to you why fighters dont fight at their natural weight. lets say five of us are 150lb and fight at that weight... there will be a guy that walks around at 165lb that will lose weight for the weigh in to fight us at 150lb and it will give him a huge edge and the rules cant prevent him from doing that. where there is a stake there will be people doing everything they can to win. so you cant just say ''fighters should fight at their natural weight'' u need to come up with a realist solution to prevent that.

I saw my barrister cousin's two year old's daughter speaking perfect English, full sentences when she was barely two years old. Two years gone by, after some time in elementary school, she was telling a story about herself and some friends. "We was going to the library..." Her mum interrupted (in mildly appalled tone): "We WERE going." My cousin's daughter picked up that weird colloquial slang from school, not her parents. With her training in Brazil, Dern possibly spends more time around non-native English speakers than she does native English speakers. Acquiring (and consciously or unconsciously imitating) accent is possibly a sign of verbal intelligence. I started modifying my speech when I spent two and a half years teaching kindergarten in Taiwan. It's a human development to absorb your surrounding language. So I cut her some slack in this accent progression. Regarding her unfair weight advantage, that was outrageous and shows a disinterest that will limit her growth ceiling.

It happens alot actually it depends on the foot position for the "reap," or potential "reap," in good faith. If the entry is leg entanglement "ashigoroma," some times the inside foot can go past the hip, some refs will call "that," a "reap." Moreover the "favoritism," was insinuated or eluded before the technique of the "reap,"- "potential reap," or presuming foot position. I wouldn't advice going for leg entanglements from sidemount or mount anyway in "IBJJF," in the past because limitations in "gi." In the past also when was the match, what were the rules for leg locks? Was it gi or no gi because of the allowance of heal hooks in no gi it is a more dynamic option to "drop," for leg entanglements because the finish rate multiplys. But if it's just straight ankle lock, toe hold, knee bar ext it might not be the best option because of potentially loosing side mount, or mount. Especially if you already had point awarded. I have had been "DQ'ed," After passing a guard and having other complications with freeing the arm, my arm. After Awared the points I was DQ'ed for wearing a cup despite the fact that the cup did not have anything to do with the match. Disaponting really.......

I deal with the "Brazilian" thing in my class too. Never competed, but even as a white belt, I have been in class long enough to see where the trainer who is totally Asian, but was born in Brazil, talks mostly to the other girls who look totally white, but they speak portugese (?) ... some days are different than others, but I feel like as long as I am not winning at something, they are satisified. Whenever I try to be friendly & just have a normal chat with them, it's like they only want to hear about 10 seconds & then shift their attention elsewhere. There is also another older white guy that thinks because he is friends with the owner that he can be an undercutting tool towards me too. ... Although my personally demanding scheduel does support the reason I cant make it a lot (though I make sure my child makes theirs), they dont like the fact that I can walk in & still do well. Last time I was in, they were trying to "tell the class" that "you have to keep practicing & training over & over. You guys need to get you miles in so you can roll for a little bit after class if you like." ... I know what they are saying but not saying based on how they act friendly to my face for 10 seconds but generally cold should me in coversation aaand they wonder why I (also) dont attend much. Everyday that I decide to go can give a different mood. ... anyway, yeah the "Brazilian" thing DOES exist!

When people in my country go to Italy for 6 months and work there, they speak Italian nonstop. When they come home their inflexions of the voice and pronunciation changes drastically. We are wired to change the way we speak so we are more akin to people around us. However, changing the full vocabulary or forgetting it, that's just bullshit.

As for it's proper lower body control for leg submissions banning it makes leg locks more difficult to finish. ... As is most often used for leg locks and heel hooks and the danger in those submissions is torn ligaments and a year off from competition, there is no way they will be legal.
@RamseyDewey6 жыл бұрын
Man, every time I've competed in an IBJJF tournament and tapped my opponents with straight ankle locks, I've been disqualified for knee reaping. No matter what adjustments I made, no matter how closely I followed the rule book, no matter how much I checked with the refs about the details before the tournaments, they ALWAYS call it knee reaping.

6:52 "accents are weird to begin with, like why do people talk the way they talk in the first place? because they sound like the people around them" No. It's because different languages use different muscles, and when you use the muscles of one languages with another language you get an accent. Try speaking a language that isn't your mothertongue with no accent for the first time for a whole day. You will NOT be able to do it because your face will be too sore after 2~3 hours and you will wind up slurring.

So what about the difference in accents between English speaking countries like America, Australia, and those in the UK and such? Or the differences in regional accents like New York vs Tennessee or Cockney vs Scouse?

Some people change accents some people keep their accent all their life no matter where they are. And some people pick up the accent of the people around them pretty fast. I do it sub consciously and consciously at different times. Some people change languages mid sentence and don't realise it. People are weird and amazing.
