Quite often the result of a discussion or debate will be that one side fails to properly defend their arguments. Here Matt failed to defend his arguments because he wasn't willing to openly state the first principal position that they're based on, that being the prioritisation of religious teachings over individual liberty.

Super late on this video, but the “50% of all marriages end in divorce” is actually only a half-truth. It’s more like 1/3 of all 1st marriages end in divorce, and after that the divorce rate gets progressively higher the more marriages you end up in afterwards. I believe the statistic is that almost 70% of all 3rd marriages and beyond end in divorce… which makes sense. Poor communication, serial adulterers, and generally “toxic” people tend to not maintain healthy, long-term relationships.
@DangerRussDayZ65336 ай бұрын
Actually, this isn't at all bad for Matt. You're outing yourselves as not understanding what Matt is trying to say. Joe does not at all understand Matt's position, and Matt is struggling to explain it in a way that Joe understands. Most modern people don't understand the point that Matt is making, because we have lived all of our lives in a mostly secular society that has long ago lost the understanding of the important of our traditions. What is marriage? It's a simple question. If it's just some secular contract 2 people make with the state, which is basically our modern understanding, then there is absolutely no reason to be against gay marriage. However, if you understand marriage to be an institution, that is commonly found throughout all of human history, with the goal of creating the family unit. If you understand it to be a contract between 2 people, God, and their community, it takes on a completely different meaning. Furthermore, with no fault divorce, it's the only contract in your entire life that any party can cancel at any time for any reason and then take half of your stuff, which has only further served to destroy the institution of marriage. As it stands now, why get married? If 2 people love each other, why get married? What does marriage do for you? What is marriage? "5:49 who cares what a marriage is, why do we need to define what a marriage is?" If you ask yourself this question, about literally any other word, perhaps you'll realize just how stupid of a question that is. If we can't agree on the definition of words than we can't have a conversation.
@applepie88416 ай бұрын
Except in division of assets, it's usually because the person receiving "your" half of assets sacrificed their working years to raise the kids, make the home, and support your career instead of their own. Your assets before marriage are exempt(unless your spouse contributed to renovations to your previously bought home--one example). It is meant to protect the financially disadvantaged partner from experiencing a significantly diminished quality of life while seeking a living wage with a resume that doesn't exist. Your best bet is to enter marriage with someone either making similar money to you, or don't get butthurt if the person you marry makes more money than you. Pay for daycare instead of letting one person quit their job (or they'll then have "favor" over the marital assets). Like it or not, until the government takes their hands off marriage, then it will continue to be more secular (the gays want to marry) than sacrament (for procreation and symbol of God).

I don't believe in the stuff that a small but loud minority on the left is saying (people that people like Walsh would like to present as "the left as a whole"). You know, they decide the pronouns of their unborn child and so on, just bullshit. Almost everyone on this planet is, and will be, either a male or female and that includes trans people. 5% to 10% are non-heterosexual. Oh the irony: symbolism is embedded within how Christians, especially Catholics, perceive marriage. It's meant to reflect the union of Christ with the church. Symbolism does not make something lesser, it's a necessary thing that humanity and society use to understand things, including institutions. Marriage in particular is communal on many levels: two people communing with their deeply held love, demonstrating that love in a ceremony with friends and family, being recognized as such within their society. Christofascists like Matt take their privileged position for granted and act like gay people getting marriage waters it down. The social priority to get married like it's an accomplishment and that pressure is the problem: no fault divorce can be exploited same as marriage can, doesn't make either of them useless, just prone to potential issues

Allowing the rampant divorce? Does he think they should just micromanage marriage? Again with how hypocritical he is: supposedly not caring, yet also acting like someone else's actions somehow hurts an institution without showing any real understanding of sociology or psychology. People can cohabitate for years before they marry, I still know a couple that's engaged since 2014 or so. I fear they may divorce if only because of the sheer strain that may be happening with the woman really wanting kids, yet they've tried for years. Obscuring language like changing “constitutional republic” to “democracy” when they both mean very different things, is an actual tactic to mold a society into thinking a certain way. Words can only mean one thing, that is something we observe hence why we need to call it something to begin with. Way to drink the Kool-Aid bot.
@noneofyourbusiness32882 жыл бұрын
@@XX_MelobraacRedux "Words can only mean one things" .... no they dont. Here are some examples: "kite" could be a construction made of cloth flying in the wind, or can be a term applied to movement in video-games. "Bolt" can be something that holds a screw in place or it can be slang for a card played in magic the gathering. a ship can be a vessel made to move on water (or space I guess if you are a scifi fan) or something a fandom does to two (hopefully fictional) characters. An essay can be a piece of writing or a scientific experiment. There are countless examples of words having multiple meanings and those are just some with completely different meanings, when you get to slightly different meanings it becomes even more complicated. There is a reason why semantics often takes up a large part of debates and why legal documents have very detailed definitions of any important term in them. also: People who go with the "republic not democracy" line are way too happy to abolish democracy. Be careful with that rhetoric, especially in times when internally and especially in the US fascism is on the rise. Also also: democracy and republic are not mutually exclusive, most democracies are in fact republics and most republics are democracies.
@XX_MelobraacRedux2 жыл бұрын
@@noneofyourbusiness3288 So are you arguing that “they can change meanings” argument or sticking to the “they can mean different things” argument? I did bring up that things have a set definition, however for marriage, it *is* one of those things that have a set definition: a tradition that joins together a man and woman, most prominently based in religious beliefs. A civil union is something you might be referring to which something like a government can approve of, but it is not the same thing. That is where problems arise when you conflate the two when it goes against the tradition and religious beliefs of many. That is why people are rightfully angry. No one is saying you can’t be together, but calling it a marriage just to make you happy in your mind isn’t enough, especially when you proceed to trample on other’s faiths and want to get divorced anyhow. Also, please spare me the lecture about what I said about democracy. I bet you learned that in a government sponsored community college and I’m not interested. Thank you for proving my point by brazenly shilling for this kind of obfuscation of language.
@noneofyourbusiness32882 жыл бұрын
@@XX_MelobraacRedux Ok lets go through this point by point: 1) marriage already changed its meaning. The nuclear family is a relatively new concept and the oldest forms of marriage are contracts between families for political or economical gain. They also were usually "one man and however many women he can afford" not "one man one woman". 2) While often officiated by religious officials, that was the case for most important contracts at the time. They dont necessarily have a religious nature. 3) Nobody is trampling on anyones religious believes when marriage includes LGBT-couples. I swear right wingers have some kind of victim complex going on. YOU dont et to impose YOUR believes on somebody else. That is the entire point of secularism and religious liberty. How would you like it if pastafarians changes the meaning of marriage to "one man and his noodle sieve" and now your marriage is illegitimated? 4) If you want to say a religious institution can refuse to officiate a marriage, I agree with you. I would not force a priest to do a church-wedding for an LGBT couple, or an interracial couple, or any couple if he wants to be a dick about it. But people have a right to a government-wedding. I would also say that if you are discriminatory you should wave your tax-exempt status (though I dislike the idea of untaxed religion in general). If you want to be bigoted you dont get tax breaks. Still not infringing on anyones believes. 5) "Omg government community college", no I learned that in middle-school. Still government funded yes, but not part of some crazy conspiracy. 6) Republic = temporary head of state, not life-time inherited title. Democracy = control of government institutions is distributed to as many people as possible. Usually be some kind of voting mechanism that elects representatives (representative democracy, though direct democracy does also exist). 7) The US has both: it has elections (democracy: check) and it has a temporary head of state(republic check). I grant you that it is a pretty shitty democracy with very outdated systems (otherwise there would be more than 2 parties and Republicans would not stand a chance federally), but it has some degree of democratic control. Functionally it is closer to an oligarchy and with Republicans bringing Moore v Harper before SCOTUS it might slip into out right autocracy. But as for now, still a democracy. Though the right is trying very hard to change that.

I think he has realized that in the USA these views are not mainstream, and only supported by maybe 10,15, possibly 20% of the population. Therefore, he has decided to try and reframe his view based on other reasons that might be more palatable for most people. That is why this feels hollow, because his real views steam from the fact that he (backed up by a small amount of like minded people) interpret the Bible to say homosexuality is a sin. This really has nothing to do with procreation or any of that other nonsense, it has to view with his interpretation of the Bible.

Tommy tends to fall victim to these American conservative grifters. It's a bit frustrating seeing him shit on these people for their abhorrent beliefs, but then still entertain them as ideologues. Most people don't actually care about these topics. Tommy has just fallen victim to conservative grifters tainting the public discourse. He is playing their game. To me a marriage is a promise of commitment in philosophy while in practice it has evolved into an institution but I don’t think that institution is bad. It just makes life easier for married couples to function for one, financially like with taxes and the ability to move wealth between each other as well as medically since it allows for certain hospital visitation rules to be passed and it allows for the other person to be able to make medical decisions about the partner if that partner is incapacitated. So I get that marriage is an institution but I don’t get why that’s a bad thing.

@leryx2665 Жыл бұрын
Of course anyone can get married, and even get married and not have children, it's a personal decision that no third party other than the couple should meddle with. What happens is that throughout history it has been shown that marriages between men and women are the ones that have given the best results in terms of prosperity, wealth, longevity of life, etc. Those who marry the same sex or even among heterosexual people who marry and do not want children have to accept the consequences of their decisions. In other words, for example, couples who have children later when they are old are the children who take care of the parents so that they have a better quality of life, they can have health insurance, but ultimately there are always the children who take care of from his parents. Same-sex couples and heterosexual couples who do not want to have children have to accept these consequences, therefore when a statistic is made saying that couples without children or same-sex couples have a worse time than heterosexual couples with children, they should not ask the state to make others pay the consequences. That's the real problem. They should not want the state to pay them a compensation, making that loss have to be paid by the rest of the people who happend to have a traditional marriage.

I consider myself to be very right wing, but I've never really understood why people oppose gay marriage. I think the only thing that should be put in place is that you shouldn't be forced to marry a gay couple if your religion doesn't like it, like forcing a church to have a priest marry a gay couple in the church or something, let them choose if they want to or not. I know Tommy's take on religion is that of an edgy 14 year old Redditor who just learned about Atheism. But most religious people don't actually oppose gay marriage, they might not really like it, but they're not going to protest it either. Only the very extreme ones like those psychos over in Westboro Baptist Church genuinely oppose it. As a Christian myself, I will be the first to stand up to any religious person who holds a sign saying "God hates gays" because you're a blasphemer if you say that. We're all God's children, and he loves all of us, a true father isn't going to hate you because you do something that maybe he doesn't fully approve of. There's literally no reason to oppose it other than you just don't like it. But at the end of the day, unlike certain other things this topic doesn't fundamentally change anything. It doesn't even fundamentally change marriage. All it does it give the right to gay people to marry so there is quite literally 0 reason to oppose it.
