@@Izaan2810 What commercial film had DDL done?
@Izaan28103 жыл бұрын
@@catchbooker7257 Gangs of New York and Lincoln. Just commercial Oscar baity movies especially the latter. Former was a really mediocre movie so it didn't work out but it was obviously made for that reason. While I would agree that DDL was great in those regardless, Gary Oldman killed it in the Dark Knight movies as well be it commercial or art. His acting was superb and he nailed the role to the point that some critics thought that he should have been nominated at Oscars for The Dark Knight for supporting actor. So I don't know how Oldman doing The Dark Knight movies place him below DDL when they are some of the greatest trilogies if not the greatest trilogy to be ever made.

@@Izaan2810 I'll give you Lincoln, Oscar bait like the Iron Lady with Meryl Steep but we'll have to agree to disagree on Gangs Of New York. Very few 18 rated films are commercial success's. @@Garrus1995 I really tried to love it because Scorsese is always the consummate professional. Can't get away from a theatrical, corporate sheen over the whole project, though. DiCaprio and Diaz, talented and intuitive as they are, just hadn't yet attained the ability to be their roles. Hadn't put it into words before but overall, I'd say the tensions and pressures of the shoot appeared to take away from the tensions and pressures the story was trying to convey.
@mnb91625 жыл бұрын
@@Garrus1995 I think a lot of people have the opinion that it is a good movie now. Clearly gets a lot of views as it is re-run quite a lot. It was quite a new format at the time though with very close camera shots. It doesn't stand out as much today because a lot of movies do the same thing. But at the time it felt a bit cheap like they were cutting corners by shooting so close without any panoramic views. Basically a cheaper way to shoot if the wider shots don't look good. What year did you first see the movie?

A lot of Lincoln's dialog in the movie came directly from the massive biography on Abraham Lincoln by John Nicolay and John Hay. Nicolay and Hay were long time private secretaries to Lincoln who had been with him for many years of Lincoln's career, even before his presidency. In the movie "Lincoln", Hay was played by Joseph Cross and Nicolay was played by Jeremy Strong. They do not have many speaking parts in the movie but in nearly every scene with Lincoln meeting with his cabinet they can be seen in the background, listening and observing. Yes, it is impossible to know precisely what Lincoln said word for word, but much of it was reconstructed based on that biography. And there were perhaps no two better people to write a bio on Lincoln than his longtime aides and secretaries John Hay and John Nicolay. In fact, just about every single biography ever written on Lincoln is pulling information from Nicolay and Hay's books.

I was irish super heavyweight boxing champion at the time when Daniel trained at Crumlin boxing club, for the film: The Boxer. He had two couch's guiding him, Barry McGuigan and my own couch Phil Sutciff (the Chairman of Crumlin ABC). Incidentally it's the same boxing club McGregor trained in as a boy... Anyways Daniel trained twice a day and become very good on the pads and he loved skipping! He did spar often enough with the lighter lads, but only body shots. I remember him being extremly focused and it was obvious he absorbed everything like a sponge. However, (I'm smiling to myself now, thinking back) it was kind of off-putting the way he'd stare at us while we were hitting the heavy bag or zipping away on the speed ball! But he was always pleasant and engaging and most importantly without any of that megastar ego, bullshit. He said something along the lines about "boxing is a level playing field and it doesn't matter who you are, climbing through those ropes you've got to earn respect of your opponent the hard way!" It's no wonder he's so revered!

@@saintniccage2818 I can tell a joke when I see it, but I think it also carries the seed of a certain misconception about Lewis which I've seen repeated all over, which is that he's this braggart that uses his dedication specifically for external admiration, a snobbish badge of honor. He's been known to discuss his craft when asked, but never in the way that it's used by studios as a drawing point, and it tends to get blown to a proportion that the dude's not really comfortable with, as he's actually more of an introvert. So yeah, excuuuuuuuuuuuse me, princess.

Daniel Day doesn't stay in character all the time during filming, he keeps the voice and mannerisms but mentally he switches in and out of the character like a professional actor. People who do method acting can take it too far being a jerk on set (Dustin Hoffman) but real method actors commit to the part without abusing/confusing people and holding up production. But seriously, get Daniel Day on the show. He'd probably be very amused by talking someone drastically different than him like Joe.
