I miss the days when Marcelo was competing. A different era of bjj where drama and online trash talking wasn't a thing. The only improvement I like since those days is the development of the leg lock game.

leg locks are cool to a point though. The only thing worse than a butt scoot is two 10th planet guys diving into each others legs and playing footsie for 6 minutes.
@adamabbas1487
@adamabbas1487 2 ай бұрын
@user-br6ve4lz6n that was mostly due to the ebi rules rewarding that strategy. It doesn't happen nearly as much with ebi rules/competitions becoming redundant. Adcc, ibjjf or hybrid rules are more popular so it matters if your guard gets passed if the leg lock entry didn't work. They won't immediately get someone's are or back by stalling till the overtime. The only thing the ebi rules improved is back and arm bar defense/escapes.

An old trainer partner of mine (110kg of pure muscle, Black Belt, Intelligent MF), went to train for a month with MG. This is the guy that would towel almost everyone, only a select few could compete/beat him. He was solid in terms of technique and fitness. He said that Marcelo was unimaginably strong, his grip was like nothing he'd ever felt, all round, super, super strong - freakishly strong. He felt like a beginner against him.

Joe is incorrect here that his legs are part of his finishing game here. Marcelo was one of the first bjj players to prioritize the "seatbelt" grip over the hooks (legs.) His philosophy is that he can stay attached via a strong seatbelt and wait for the hooks come in, or roll you via his upper body control to expose the opening for hooks. His freakish legs come into play with how he can off-balance and elevate you for sweeps. I've felt it first-hand and when he dives under for that hook sweep and elevates your ass is going for a ride.

Not to sound disrespectful, but what about Alexandre Dantas cafe? I noticed he has like 3 wins over Marcelo García and was 5 times world champion ... however, no one talks about him as much as MG..?
@jsl8461
@jsl8461 3 жыл бұрын
First of all, Cafe only has two wins, Marcelo beat him once. Also, at the time, Cafe competed in 100kg, whereas Marcelo competed in 82kg, so that's a massive size difference. In terms of titles, Cafe is only 2x IBJJF World Champion at black belt in his weight class. He also won 2003 World Championship in Absolute, but for a heavyweight like Cafe, the Absolute is usually less competitive because a lot of your opponents will be smaller than you (whereas in weight class, all your opponents will be as big as you). So at best he has 3 world titles at the black belt level, all in the gi. Compare that to Marcelo, who is 5x IBJJF World Champion and 4x ADCC Champion, for a total of nine world titles split between both gi and no-gi. Marcelo is also one of the few middleweight grapplers to have successfully submitted numerous elite heavyweights. Also, keep in mind, middleweight categories are a lot more competitive than heavyweight categories as there is a much bigger talent pool (true in pretty much all combat sports). If you want to compare Cafe to heavyweights, then Roger is the king. He was 7x IBJJF World Champion and 1x ADCC Champion in his weight category. On top of that, he had 4 more world titles if we include his Absolute accomplishments. In many of his title runs, he submitted every single one of his opponents. Xande is another heavyweight great, who is 5x IBJJF World Champ and 2x ADCC Champ, with an additional 2 titles in Absolute. He's also beaten Roger 3 times, which is incredible considering how dominant Roger was at that time. Both of these men have far greater accomplishments than Cafe in terms of IBJJF and submission grappling.
