I was sparring the owner of my Muay Thai gym earlier. Managed to land a kick to his side which knocked him down. He was on the ground with a massive smile on his face saying he's happy to see I've improved. Martial arts are great. Also I'm a former bully victim who learned boxing when I was 17 and haven't dealt with bullies since (I'm now 29).

Bullies are more of a elementary or high school thing. I'm actually surprised if you had bullies still past 17 years of age. Most guys are naturally so strong or vengeful when they grow up bullying would escalate to really nasty dangerous shit.

Just learn some martial art, do some psychedelics and if you make it through, you will be a better person. Joe Rogan in a nutshell.

It all comes from knowing yourself. Martial arts teach confidence in your ability and a mindset where you understand your surroundings, mushrooms bring you an understanding of your deeper self.
@spooky0.0685 жыл бұрын
@mark d I want to do ayahuasca so bad; if I can even get my hands on psyches then its lsd/shrooms. My largest of both has been 1, 4 tabs of 105ug and 2, about a quarter ounce of mushrooms. 2 crazy, perspective altering experiences. Total vulnerability of the mind and body, followed by total ego death. Learning who was, who I really was through the looking glass of my phsylosibe companion, changed me. I'm looking forward to doing more, especially DMT, I think I'll have to go out to BC to find any.

Yep, but it's important to remember you have value outside of that. I love to weight-lift and train, but it started to become all I thought about and took up a large part of my personality and conversations with friends. That can be just as damaging as having no self-esteem, in my opinion at least. I think we should be striving to be as balanced as possible, and not heavily using one thing as a crutch or just dangling our feet over one side of the scale.

@@simonoconor8149 No.... Teaching your kids about consequences and the difference between right and wrong, is more important. My brother and I both learned karate when we were kids. I took up Thai Boxing back home in England when i was 15 years old in 1988. I did it for 5 years and it was one of the best i did at a young age. I lifted weights two years before that but getting involved in Thai Boxing was the best. I went on to Box in the Army for a Short while after as i had low self esteem as a kid and i got picked on at a very young age. I would say to anyone no matter what you early back ground is that Martial Arts or Combat sports is very good for Self Preservation .

I suffer from tremendous anxiety with roots in the lack of self-confidence. What I can’t figure out is the connection to my childhood though. Although my father divorced my mom when I was a year old my mom, by all accounts and my observations, has done not only the most she could have done in that situation, but she nurtured me so well over the years. No physical or emotional abuse when I was growing up, yet I feel like an immature manchild most of the time. I’m 25, have a master’s, have a decent job, yet I find it incredibly hard to talk to women (especially since I had to wean off benzos that I picked up in grad school) and find myself playing video games as a shitty form of self-actualization. I know nobody gives a fuck if I place in the top .01% PvP ladder in WoW. I know many more people would give a fuck if I decided to more aggressively climb the ranks in my career. Anyway, I credit Rogan for helping me enroll in a BJJ studio just last month. It’s been doing wonders for normalizing my energy levels but I’m still socially awkward and anxious af. Hoping this just goes away with time.
@carlynielsen23435 жыл бұрын
Outplayedx you'll be alright. Time takes care of all things.
@ashutan21305 жыл бұрын
nobody cares where you rank in WoW but, the thing is to do it for its own sake. Better to focus on your job more, sure, but if that's to make "more people give a fuck" that's a bad reason to work more hours. Even if it's not playing games, putting time into anything is all for its own sake, you don't gain anything but doing the thing. (Good for doing BJJ though, martial arts are a fine way to spend good time.)
@Outplayedqt5 жыл бұрын
Ash Fooly Thanks for sharing I appreciate your input. You’re totally spot on. Trying to please people has been one of the worst core traits of my personality all my life. I know that “successful people cant achieve success without enemies” or however that butchered idiom goes, and other than reading The Game in high school and attempting to get rejected by women everyday (that lasted 2 weeks before I dropped that lol), I’m not sure what I else I could reasonably do to reduce this daily symptom that rears it’s head in p much every single social situation I’m in. Like many, I experimented with drugs in college and stimulants, by far, helped me the most in this regard. Although I haven’t touched them in years by this point, it’s disheartening to see that I’m unable to mimic that headspace when sober. I guess it’s particularly harsh because it gave me an “idea” of WHAT I could be and my potential, so being all the more far away from it, I think, makes it particularly harder to bear. I know that I simply can’t compare my sober self to to another time when I was on strong drugs, but where others have logged their strengths and weaknesses by my age and learn to capitalize on their strengths and base their career off that, I’m still trying to chase that damn Tony Robbins dragon because I’d feel like a failure and that I’ve surrendered to a life of complacency should I learn to come to terms with and accept my faults. When I was 18, I thought I’d be less worried and put-together when I was 21. 21 came and went, and I thought that by 24, I’d ACTUALLY get my shit together. Now I’m 25 and I feel more lost than I’ve ever been in my life. And I hate reading what I just wrote. Sounds like a bunch of immature whining with way too much emotional investment. Fuck. I always criticize myself without praising whatever few strengths I have and I’m just tired as fuck at this point. I appreciate the comment above yours about time healing things, but I can’t say that makes me feel better. All I know is the years are passing by way too fast.

Learning a martial art is the best thing a man can do for himself. What some people forget, it’s more than breaking bones and choking people out. It’s more than that, it’s about becoming the best version of you, you can possibly be. Not only will the training prepare you for a fight should you need to defend yourself, but the confidence and mental fortitude to know when enough is enough. The confidence to stop fights from beginning altogether

Society supports bullying. I’ve always been one to fight back and I have an assault and battery charge. The bitch that tried to act hard on me was seen as the victim😂 but one of the reasons kids don’t stand up for themselves is because the one that stands up for themselves usually gets into trouble like the video with Matt Serra the guard was lightweight blaming it on Serra. Another reason is parents. Most parents today are soft and naive especially the ones that say treat people good and they will treat you good back. That’s like swimming with crocs and expecting not to be eaten because you didn’t eat the croc. At the end of the day it’s kill or be killed

I am born in 97, so not as strange of times as kids born in 07 or later but, it was allready a lot like today. Back when I was in primary school my dad told me one thing, if somebody bullies you, beat him up. That was allready an outragous thing to say at that time. So I did exactly that, I was very good in school, so the "cool dudes" wanted to sort of push me into the nerd corner. Well I beat them up and we became friends later. But one thing I will remember is, my teacher at that time, was a rather old lady, she went into retirement shortly after. When she asked me why I beat them up, I told her they had bullied me and that my dad told me to do so. She accepted that and I got a minor punishement. A year later when something similar happened and I head to report to my teacher, a yound man, he absolutely went up the roof. Violence is part of human interaction, people who don't understand and accept that have just as dum as those who think it's the only means to get what you want.

Muay Thai changed my life. I was depressed with temper problems, I was unmotivated, going through a break up and on top of that addicted to pot. Thanks to my trainer and training partners, they helped realize my self worth, made me believe in myself, physical strength soon translated to mental fortitude. Today I’m engaged to the most amazing person, run my own successful business and haven’t lost my temper in 3 years. I shall never stop practicing in my life, as long as I can move a limb I will train. I wish I could tell my trainer and training partners how grateful I am.

The first time I elbowed a kid in the face it solved my bullying issues physically but the psychological bullying never ended. Martial arts is liberating both mentally and physically.

That was an eye opener, and a shock to the system - my system - I became a bit crazy through my life because of something like Joe described. Well, not just one thing, a few things...a lot of things. I'm regretful of my lack of choice in myself back then. Defining moments in one's life make the man.

Psychologically trauma (when you a child especially) has a huge impact on oneself for the remaining of our lives even if we don’t acknowledge it. Learning martial arts helps channel that resentment, anger, upset etc Its not all about the ability to be confident in a fight Total agree with J.R in saying Every child should learn martial arts the world Would be a better place 🙏🏼

I am happy that I learned to find inner peace. I just don't want to react with violence to violence. I never was afraid of getting hurt. I would go berserk, I would throw punches and kicks until I was beaten unconcious, won, or collapsed from exhaustion. Martial Art taught me to control my inner hatred and to channel my love for combat and glory through combat, into just wishing to find an equal. I could never hurt anyone weaker than me, equal to me, stronger than me. I, now, just want both parties to be unharmed and go their seperate ways. Any martial Art is a powerful tool to teach you composure, self-confidence and control. I would never hit someone weaker with full force. I broke a girls rip by huggin her. I never want to inflict that level of pain and misery onto someone else. I am convinced that Martial Arts make you a more confident, happy and well-rounded person. Addition: I apologize for any spelling, or grammar mistakes. English is not my first language.

The physical training, even at the most basic level, is mentally and emotionally fulfilling... It reminds me of Christopher Reeves in preparation for the role of Superman in 1978... He said (to this effect), "Because I feel stronger than I was going into this, now I have the confidence to play this role convincingly because I feel the part."

Man it’s crazy how similar people’s life are. I got into boxing kinda the same way plus having an older brother I had to consistently scrap with I knew I needed to learn how to defend myself. Also the confidence issues I’m steal dealing with but, sports specifically combat sports helped me with that. Anyone who has any issues I seriously recommend a combat sport. 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

The last point made by Joe's guest was very important. When a young man doesn't have someone to go to when bullying occurs it can send him into a spiral of self-hatred and depression. A young boy doesn't know how to process those feelings of fear, and humiliation. I grew up in Oakland, California and I was basically invisible in school. The difference between me and Joe is the bullying occurred throughout my childhood. The worst time was in middle school and I can remember feeling very depressed (didn't realize it till I got older) and if I wasn't so clueless about suicide I probably would have taken my own life. Before I decided to learn Karate (then later Judo, Boxing, Jiujitsu) I suffered more frequent and severe episodes of bullying. Martial Arts changed my life, or I should say saved my life. And Joe was right, that bullying shit stays with you for life no matter how important you've become, who you married, how much money you make, or badass you've become. Living in the past is not healthy, but I can't help going back to those memories over and over. I think it's brought out sociopathic behavior like increased aggressiveness, and I'm almost void of empathy. It's been a struggle to fit in as a result. There is a price.

Learned wing chun for 6 months + casually once a week back 9 years ago. This cocky 6'1" 13 year old guy at our school thought he could take me, but it wasn't an all-out scrap it was a fight at light sparring intensity because he didn't want to get hurt. I didn't want to trigger him into swinging like an ape so I just kept it light. I really was not good then, all I really did was "control the centerline" and I rushed through him the chain punches that I drilled. I overwhelmed him and his head fell on to a vertical surface. I asked if he were okay, he replied that he was fine but out of frustration he used most of his strength to shove me back really hard. I was caught surprised and didn't have a good stance then so I flew backwards. He asked that I went again but i kept winning. This guy ended this weird ego exchange by saying that I was not bad, but if he used grappling he would have destroyed me. "But why didn't you do a takedown?" I wondered in my mind but I didn't want to argue with this idiot so I just said 'sure'. 9 years later, I am still doing wing chun and man I could have sent him to the shadowverse with my current skills

My life was shit and I felt so sorry for myself for a while but I took up martial arts cause my dad noticed I was in a shithole and I said sure cause I was so bored all day and didn’t have much going for me. I took up Thai boxing and Jiu Jitsu and I loved it, plus Thai boxing came easy as I did Karate pretty well when I was 8. Now I got my life together and my grades in HS are good and I’m training harder so I can compete in Thai Boxing one day 💪

Society supports bullying. I’ve always been one to fight back and I have an assault and battery charge. People need to just not fear the law or fear society or fear losing a fight. Go down a warrior rather than a coward, kill or be killed. Parents should not raise there kids to be victims, I hate when you all say treat people good and they will treat you good back. That’s like going to a lion and not expecting to be eaten cause you don’t want to eat the lion.
