It's important to note that while $34K/year puts you in the 1% globally, that doesn't take into account purchasing power differences between countries. In many countries $30K is worth what $60-100K or more is in America.

I'm aware you're relatively fortunate to be lower class in the US, when you consider cobalt miners in Africa. A couple things though. $34k goes a looootttt further in other countries, so it's not accurate to say you're super privileged to make a certain income in one location. Like, you're a lot better off earning $20k a year in Indonesia than you are making $34k in the US. And also, why settle for ok? If you look at the quality of life for a relatively low income earner in the Netherlands or any Scandinavian country, you'll see that they have it much better than their analogue in the U.S. No reason to hang our caps and say we're good to go because it's luckier to be an American fast food worker than a cobalt miner in Africa. So yeah... holding both of these truths, it's pretty good here, could be a lot worse, so don't forget to enjoy what we have, but we ought to also aim higher. And yeah, fuck that cobalt slave situation. I wonder what average people can do to help those people. Or if the best thing is really just to donate to non-profits who are trying to tackle the situation.

@@mitchellhedden1978 Why? The quality of life in America has already plummeted, since the Obamacare lie destroyed their healthcare system. He said "if you're happy with your healthcare provide, you can keep them". Not only was that a wilful deception, he knew he was full of shit when he said it; but then the insurance companies he was banking on providing this coverage all backed out of the deal. So what's good there? Every major city (all democrat "strongholds" by the way,) are in shambles. They're coming after your guns, they're coming after your gas stoves; your mason jars, and canning equipment. Everything that is conducive to self-reliance, the O'biden administration is now trying to take away. They can forcibly take "your land", while offering you a pittance for it, and they'll even fine, or jail you for *gathering rainwater.* They can jail you under the mere suspicion of terrorism, without trial, without informing your family. So as a very disappointed American myself, what is *actually* good about America right now?

The idea behind UBI isn't that everybody gets to do nothing. It's that you don't worry about being homeless or going hungry. People will still work to afford luxuries like nice shoes or alcohol or a million other things. Also, I don't think abstaining from buying a smart phone helps things. Like, if the world just stopped using cobalt, I really don't think the situation for all of these miners in the Congo is going to take a turn for the better. I think there is a better solution to help these people, but that's a long discussion

@@Dave_of_Mordor Frankly, I don't know how most people survive in our current economic/social structure; this might have some correlation to the unstable mental states we seem to be witnessing more of... suicides, mass shootings, political unrest, etc... I speculate people accept it due to a myriad of reasons; mostly though, it comes down to what other alternatives are there? One can try to vote for representatives to change the system; this is very difficult, though, given the power and money gained by controlling the system. Not many people are willing to give that up. I liken it to George Washington's stance on slavery - he may have seen the inherent evil in owning and exploiting another human and that we should do away with the practice... but he wasn't ready to lead by example and give up his own slaves; fearing he might not be as well off. One could do things the old-fashioned way; revolts & uprisings. This would typically require the general state of affairs to be quite dire, such that the average person has nothing left to lose. This is the grand key to remaining in power; let the general population have just enough so that they are distracted from the thoughts of a coup. There was a Simpsons episode that touched on this - "Let the fools have their Tar-tar sauce". kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmOYo4Nqp7mqaaM “To put it crudely, it’s bribing the population to be well-enough-off, otherwise, they’ll work for changing the system.” - Vinod Khosla

That's the thing with tiktok. It's a lot of cinematography and editing and planning out these hyper-focused trends and quick, punchy comedy. Is it high art? No, fuck no. It's stupid, kiddish nonsense. But it takes real-world EFFORT. In 10-20 years we're going to see a boom of film because so many people are going to decide "You know I liked making tiktoks a lot, I should make more stuff with my camera" and slowly develop into directors and cinematographers and editors. We already saw a (significantly smaller) boom from youtube, but youtube's barrier of entry for kids and teens was WAY higher. TT doesn't have that, and so you see a much younger crowd buying in on it. Which is HUGE for pushing this kind of thing. I dunno, it's gonna be really cool I think.

The other day I was talking to my Dad and I was telling him that I had just put down my cat and I had a vet come to the house to do it, afterwards I had her cremated and I was telling my Dad that it cost about $600, when suddenly I hear him laughing in reaction to this and he starts telling me that back when he was young they would just take a sick cat and put it in a pillowcase and throw it in the river. And I was literally pulling the phone back from my face in disgust! But then I realized, not unlike the Tibetan Monk that Louis was talking to about his dog, that my Dad, a product of the 1950's was just reacting to how insane it seems to him that we as a society have grown to use our wealth to care for others and not just shit on each other instead? Even if it means we also have a fuckin iPhone and don't realize how brutal that can be as well?

Maybe things don't need to be so great all the time. We need to zoom out a little, care a little more about our planet than we do. Yesterday I read an article about blocks of ice in the size of 3 183,7 km² breaking from the main ice land in the north pole.

Lol Another great example of how Rogan will just agree with whoever he has on, and has lost so much "credibility" over these past few years.. with me at least.. just my opinion, and if you disagree that's totally fine of course.. to each their own.. but he keeps seeming more and more lad DDtely like basically all those other "stereotypes" of him lol. For example, Joe was a HUGE Andrew Yang fan, and his (Rogan's) main reason was that he really liked and kinda really supported Andrew Yang quite a bit, and Rogan loved and became a big "component" (forgive me, I think I may have used the wrong word here, but you should still understand what I'm saying/trying to get at) to the U.B.I. (Universal Basic Income) policy, aka the "free money"..?.. "just being given out" .?.. and "for no reason"..?.. (I would love to elaborate on those last few quotes/statements, and explain everything wrong with them, but I unfortunately don't have enough time right now lol, sorry).. and here Rogan is speaking like it's the craziest thing he's ever heard all of a sudden and if he changed his position since then, the that's ok I guess, but he didn't even mention how he once supported it, and why he doesn't now.. again, if anyone disagrees with what I'm sayin then that's totally fine, to each their own.
