Paul Newman said Cruise practiced for 10 hours a day, and could've gone pro if he wanted to. They didn't just set up shots lol...he was legitimately nailing shots that were just amazing. Dudes dedication is unreal

In the original movie….Jackie Gleason made all his own shots…he was a unbelievable pool player

Did you ever see Jackie’s 60 min. interview? He asks Morley Safer how much money he has on him when they are playing. It’s good
@jlobiafra3 ай бұрын
Jackie could play convincingly but you can see by the editing and camera angles all the tough shots were done by the great willie mosconi

You guys nailed it on the head. An actor doesn't have to be able to do it but they have to look like they can do it.

Just like if you star in a movie about baseball or football. You don't have to actually be able to play those sports but you have to make it appear as you could.

Waiting for a 3rd movie to come out where Cruise plays the old man hustler.
@DarthBusey7 ай бұрын
100% should do this. Pool isn't what it used to be, so it might have to be another hustle.

That is correct that scene was filmed at Chris’s billiards in Chicago. We used to flock there to play pool after this movie was filmed. Great scene

Newman should have won for the Verdict. So they gave it to him for this.

That was Paul's seventh nomination and first win he said the academy awards were like pursuing a beautiful woman for twenty years and finally she relents and agrees to be with you and you just say I'm sorry I'm tired now. He wasn't even there to collect his award or give a speech. The Hustler was a much better film imo such a well written story comparatively though Scorsese did a nice job modernizing Eddie's character. Paul was devastatingly attractive in the Hustler it was believable some woman would kill herself over him. The supporting cast were all perfect Tom just couldn't recapture that eras magic.

" Although Tevis did author a screenplay for the film, having adapted the storyline directly from his novel, the filmmakers decided not to use it, instead crafting an entirely different story under Tevis' title. Except for the Felson character, none of the characters in the novel appear in the film, and except for him the characters in the film are not in the novel."

Wicked movie and everything ... and the stories are pretty good. But from a writer/screen/creator perspective ... Walter Tevis wrote the book of "Color of Money" (sequel to The Hustler) The book has absolutely no connection to the movie. The book is a lot stronger in most aspects, but could not be used as a Tom Cruise vehicle. Richard Price wrote the screenplay for Color of Money. Richard Price also wrote The Wanderers (my fav!!!).
