It's stunning how far being humble and self deprecating can go. If Brendan was just as atrocious of a comedian as he is now, but he was humble about it and went along with the joke of how terrible he is, laughed about it and didn't take it serious, I bet he could have a real fanbase. Lots of times personality is just as important, or even more important than the actual content that someone makes. Not taking yourself too seriously is one of the most attractive traits to basically everyone.

You're exactly right and that's exactly why Schaub is on his last leg with EVERYTHING. He's had a harder road than most because it's obvious to everybody that Schaub is a product made by Joe rogan and because of that, he SHOULD BE THAT MUCH BETTER than other comedians to make up for that fact and the truth is, Schaub just isn't good...at any of this. He's got maybe a year before it all comes crashing down in my honest opinion. In my experience nearly all comics are self deprecating and when they’re directly mocked, they pile on at their own expense, with the exception of hecklers. In the simplest of terms, it’s called having a sense of humor. That is a key ingredient in the formula for comedy. If you’re going to mock and critique society as a comic, you have to be willing to mock yourself. Personally every comic can’t be great, but between being a habitual liar, and the kind of friend that would sleep with your girlfriend, he’s got no character left to stand on.

Brendan would of been fine if he hadn’t pushed to be bigger than he has the talent for. Should of just stuck with tfatk and left it at that. It was an fun show and Brendan could often be funny riffing back and forth with Callen. Instead he became the full on LA scene narcissist that he probably always wanted to be (just didn’t have the money for). Multiple podcasts (where his materialism and ignorance really began to shine) and his disastrous stand up career just projected to the world how little talent he actually has. Tbh I don’t think anyone would care if he owned it. If he was a super nice and humble guy who made fun of himself at how bad he was and how he only has his platform because of his friends. People actually side with that kind of humility. Unfortunately he’s an ego ridden man child.
