How do you define, "perfect"?
Joe Rogan has owned a number of sports cars. Over the years his cars got more powerful but seemed to lose that raw, connected feeling that many of us love.
Then he found the GT3, and fell in love.
But he missed the power. He wanted more. So he bought a GT3 RS and sent it right to Porsche performance experts, Sharkwerks. They gave him more. A lot more.

If you all claim that you want to have the best "auto content" on youtube charging for the experience isnt the way to go. Why would i pay $3.99 for add free longer content when i could download adblock and watch MotorTrend's videos. I used to admire you guys as the little guys trying to make a difference. Now you're just money hungry savages. This is definitely not the future of automotive content.

It really bothers me to hear Rogan say things like “it should be Illegal”. Nothing should be “illegal”, because what that really means is that other people have decided that you are a criminal by simply owning the wrong thing. This is nothing more than man’s childish desire for a parental figure in the form of totalitarian government.

I have the feeling tha /DRIVE channel is killing a business that they had so much time and work invested to grow, and now are in risk of killing by being greedy. A LOT of other youtube channels managed to get away with some advertising. If your channel is desired by the audience, i'm sure that even car and aftermarket manufacters wouldn't mind giving you guys a small fee to review their products Sooner your paying content will be on torrents, and then you won't be making money on Drive+ subscriptions, and you won't be making money of your regular youtube "wage" Good Luck /DRIVE

I'm not sure I would go so far to say that they're being greedy. They have a high quality product and they know it. As the saying goes, "If you're good at something, never do it for free." I just think it is inappropriately priced compared to a cable channel. I would have no problem paying 1 or 2 dollars a month, but 4 is a tipping point to where it isn't a negligible cost at the end of the year

Inspector Poirot Welcome to the present and welcome to the internet, where the grandpa saying doesn't always work. The words "pay" and "internet" don't work that well because in the internet there's always an option to not pay. While with /DRIVE they made some money, but now nobody wants to watch teasers, and nobody wants to pay for /DRIVE+ because their content is too good to not be copied in torrents. This is how the internet works

Those "other" youtube channels don't spend $9000 to film a McLaren P1... $39 for a whole year's worth of content from the best automotive channel in the world sounds a whole lot better than $80 than the HBO package on your tele.

Dr. Weird I seriously don't understand peoples logic behind that sort of statement. Take Pewdiepie, the biggest KZbinr, his cost for a video is like $10 and he posts 2 times a day giving him 4+ million views, that doesn't happen with car channels. Same goes with those who make proper videos like ERB or Freddiewong, they easliy get over 10 million views, even if their costs are high they are making up for it in views. People aren't that interested in cars for it to be viable for /Drive.

We've spoken with Joe about this, and he is a subscriper of Drive +. He can give his content away for free because he makes it for $0 from his own studio. He doesn't have to travel or do really any of the things that we at /DRIVE need to do in order to make content. Joe may believe that it's better to give content away for free, but he also believes that a business that can't support itself is not a business worth getting into. It's nice that all those other publications can lose money every month on the backs of their print mag parents, but we don't have one of those.
@Zukes
@Zukes 10 жыл бұрын
TheSmokingTire If I had Joe's money I would also undoubtedly be a subscriber myself, as I know that the content is always stellar whether it be on /DRIVE or TheSmokingTire. But this is KZbin, not cable TV, and I draw the line at being expected to pay for it, especially not when it has been free to view since its conception in 2005. If a content creator chooses KZbin as their platform, then why not use alternate means of generating revenue like every other KZbin creator does, mainly through sponsored ads/endorsements

Zukes no other channel in our space makes money. None. All other "A" level automotive channels are marketing arms for either TV networks (like XCar with CBS) or magazines (like motor trend, evo, autocar, etc). /DRIVE is the only top-tier youtube channel that needs to be self sufficient.

Unfortunately I can't even afford to pay the phone bill for the phone I am writing this on so even as cheap as it seems I am sorry guys, I can not afford it. I am a youtube producer myself and all though my channel is growing fast it is no where near your numbers. Kinda worries me to be honest. We provide free entertainment and all that we ask is that you put up with 5 seconds of advertising and we can all be happy... But nooooo that is just too much to ask! Gotta get friggin adblock because you really need that 5 seconds! I'm not mad at Drive. I'm mad at the selfish little pricks that use adblock! All good things get ruined by selfish people. Tricky D YT producers rely on selling ad placement to generate income. Its how we can offer relevant entertainment without charging the viewer yet we can still earn a living. People that use adblock are taking our earnings away and still viewing the content. Effectively taking food right off their favorite shows table. Its piracy. It makes it really hard for guys like me to continue releasing videos.

Thats why Top Gear (UK, fuck Foust) is as popular as it is. When the Dacia Sandero is shit you don't have to listen to the host fumble for nice things to say about it. errant3 Why should KZbin cancel their channel? I mean, they funded the project at the beginning then they cut the funding. How is Drive supposed to make a profit? And if the platform allows you to make a per per view channel why would they cancel it? Just because most of the videos here are free it doesn't mean they all are. People just got used to watch tons of free content. Don't want to pay? don't pay. As simple as that.

Just one question to /DRIVE, why does it need to be so expensive? Although 3.99/mth may not seem expensive to you, it is to a lot of us. If you made it $0.99/mth OR $10.00 for the year, if 10% of your subscribers payed the $10, you would have $115k. While that's small, that 10% is rather conservative. I'm sure a larger percentage would be willing to pay $10 than $40. Thoughts?
@drive
@drive 10 жыл бұрын
Because of a key word: "if". If everyone that pays $4 only pays $1, then we're screwed. If twice as many people pay $1 as $4, we're still screwed.
@CruzinKrispy
@CruzinKrispy 10 жыл бұрын
/DRIVE I think your screwed ether way you got your consumers used to a certain quality of video and now your putting up teasers, it would be different if you cut the time of your free content by only a small amount and had more epic longer style videos on the payed for sorta like topgear even if it was a few longer videos a month. im not sure how you call a 1min review with 3 min of filler a worthwhile product but hey its your show.

/DRIVE I'm sure you used the word "if" when calculating the minimum number of payed subscribers necessary to create your desired revenue. Yes at a $0.99/mth, you would need 4 times as many payed subscribers, but it seems more plausible than at $3.99 I was just highlighting the fact that most people might see $10 as being viable, and would be more willing to pay, rather than $40 which is seen as a substantial amount of money for the casual KZbin viewer.

They have to add value to justify the 3.99 price tag. If paying that much gives me 6-8 more minutes of content, that's not worth it. I can rent a movie from redbox for 1.50 for a bluray that is longer and makes my 1.50 look like a good value. Cutting us off and saying hey I'll need that 3.99 is not a sustainable model, since YT generally doesn't charge to view it's video. Or $8 on Netflix gets me thousands of movies to watch. Drive hasn't given me a reason to pay the 3.99 to be like... "Oh wow nobody offers anything like this"

I rather pay a one time fee or a season fee. Now everything is on a monthly base. Spotify, Pandora, Netflix, Google Storage, and now youtube channels at the end of the day all this adds up. Anyways i believe a Season Package should be available as well. How long will your Seasons be?, How many Videos are you planning on posting in a Season? $3.99 is too high price and it is /DRIVING your viewers /AWAY+

If you want to pay for the content, PAY. If you don't want to, don't. SIMPLE. Judging from this huge backlash though, I would speculate that either they will revert back to the FREE system or the whole channel will be lost. Personally, I think it's a BAD move and It's just an excuse for them to gain more profit. If youtube hadn't introduce this pay channels, they would of strived find other ways to earn profit. If this channel starts this "pay for viewing" strategy and succeeds, this trend will spread to other channels and we'll end up paying for the whole youtube. Which in my mind what KZbin isn't and it should be FREE

Now you are charging me for a channel, when i have my internet subscription, netflix subscription, spotify subscription, tv subscripcion, etc, etc. this is fucking nuts, everybody charging for something. Thanks for so many great and FREE videos, it was awsome while it lasted, good luck making paid videos but I will not pay for them, Sincerly your friend and viewer from Mexico, Jorge Gonzalez

I just don´t get it...instead its only getting hate from us, its loyal fans until not too long ago...Well, I guess I´ll have to watch the review of this car in the "Jay leno´s garage" channel for FREE. The problem with drive+ is that it is half the price of netflix with no where near as much content. I love drive and I look forward to their content everyday but this new drive+ stuff is a bit much. I really hope that channel pay subscriptions does not become a thing on KZbin. Like what is the point of using a free video streaming service why not just get rid of your youtube channel and only post on your own website that requires a fee. Yes I know that one person unsubscribing probably won't make a huge deal to you guys but still I feel like just because I can't spare the money to subscribe that I should get almost no content at all.

I don't usually comment on youtube (or comment on the internet in general) so I hope the /DRIVE folks get to see this. I think given the problem you guys had, a subscription model makes sense. Premium content like yours (that sometimes can rival anything from the BBC in my opinion) definitely costs money. But keeping the free content as some kind of teaser is really insulting. How about just reducing the budget of the free content? Think of it like product lines. Drive and Drive+ (horribly name by the way), each one needs to make a profit. I'd rather see a 20min video of some idiots driving a Toyota corolla through the bush for free on Drive than have a 2min teaser video of some weird Indo-Englishman in Italy driving a German supercar. Bottom line is; figure how to make each product line profitable with the revenue streams associated with each.
@drive
@drive 10 жыл бұрын
Filming a car, no matter how much that car costs, costs about the same. So 20 min of some idiots in a Toyota costs just as much as filming a La Ferrari. In fact, private cars cost more, because there's no company paying for a flight. Quality content is what brought you (and the rest of the people) here in the first place. To reduce costs is to reduce the channel's quality, and then we're no longer /DRIVE.

Here's the scoop whingers. They were losing money putting up free videos. They had two options: (1) cut their losses and stop making videos or (2) start charging for them. Would you prefer you had no DRIVE videos at all? Nobody is forcing you to pay. If you don't think they're worth $4 a month DON'T PAY IT. Most of the other popular youtubers are blogs or video game footage which costs bugger all to produce. You can't compare doing a let's play ($50 for a game, $200 for a capture card, an hour of your time) to a track video (multiple $1000 cameras, petrol, 3-4 people each spending at least 3-4 hours then editing for a few hours). And that's just a basic "turn up to a local track with a press car". The fucking entitlement complex is infuriating.

Drive, if you still think this business path is a good idea; look at the dislike bar. The way to do this is not to charge for people to see your videos; these "teasers" are not worth their salt in enticing most people to pay for the other videos. The way to do it is to give people access to videos a week, or even a month, early, in exchange for a payment. This works for a lot of other people.
@oranjizer

>>>> This is a response to everyone who is in favor of new "pay to watch" idea. 1. Why do you guys forget that because youtube was free to watch, /drive got so many views and viewers. If it was a pay to watch from day one, i bet the viewer base would be tiny. 2. I will never own a Laferrari so why d fck should i pay to watch a Laferrari review? I would watch such stuff for my entertainment and my passion for fast cars, which i can satisfy by watching other free channels. So your use freaking mind to understand that as long as people give away stuff for free, you cannot charge money and still be ahead of them for almost the same content. 3. Everyone wants to make/save money, everyone wants profit. So do we.... We want profit by watching stuff for free. Why blame us for being cheap? why not blame them for being greedy? how is it OK for them to be greedy and not us? If you say that they put too much of an EFFORT to produce these videos, did they not put the same effort for all these years and still give us content for free? I thought it was about passion and not money. So if you are questioning the viewers passion why dont you question drive's passion cuz they now want MONEY!! TL DR: Im just arguing with some valid points and being very practical as to why people should not blame youtubers for expecting free stuff :D KZbin IS ALL ABOUT GOING VIRAL and you cant go viral with a "pay to watch" attitude :D PEACE

This video showed my why I probably won't sign up when it's availabe for me even if I thought I would. If you launch a paid channel, at least try to launch it that way that everyone on this planet can go for it at the same time, not that some people have to wait. Wouldn't watch all the stuff anyway, and - even though I didn't expect I'd say this anytime soon - Harris's drifting gets boring after some time. Also it's amazing how /drive shoves the fact that this video is nothing more than an advertisment for drive+ into our mouths... There's enough stuff out there that comes up to their quality. It's not like they were _that_ much above everyone else. On another note, I'm asking myself how the people over at xcar or petrolicious do it. Maybe because they have a website, where they advertise stuff and get money for it? Something that /drive never managed to get it done... Don't get me wrong, I like /drive. But you guys should've at least tried to do it a bit differently...
