Yeah there are always exceptional bright spots in the sea of safe. Conan on Late Night back in the 90s was probably more edgy than anything else. That was golden and subversive and irreverent as corporate TV talk shows got.

I was sad seeing Conan in the thumbnail but I'm very happy to find that the majority of the comments are just people defending Conan and crowning him the GOAT and the true king of late night . He didn't do it the traditional way,he did it Conan's way. He flipped it around and made it genuinely fun and he is naturally funny even funnier when it's unscripted. he treats his employees well and interacts with them which is way more fun to watch than just some interview with a celebrity(except for legends like Bill Burr, Norm McDonald and Don Rickles).And he's got the best sidekick of all time with the best one liners that steals the show,he's loyal to him,they got great comedic chemistry, easily he best late night duo. What I like most about him is that he tries to make his guest comfortable when they're nervous and makes fun of himself instead of mocking others to get a cheap laugh and he really connects well with normal ordinary people all over the world. His brand of comedy works internationally. So happy to see him succeed even though he had to go through some shitty things. Can't wait to see what he's got for us in his new show on HBO. I miss Craig Ferguson. He just had people on and improvised. No pre interview no questions..he even tore apart the "paper with questions" as a meme. This also meant he only had guests on who were comfortable doing that and it was very natural to just show up goof around

The Alpha Male yes Craig was good. Never took himself seriously to the point that the guests were never sure what to say or do. Never felt that there was any agenda with him other than to be different to the other shows but he got pushed out and replaced with James corden who is trying to be the same as the other shows where he is pandering to guests and have scripted questions and story’s as they got something to sell or promote.

And as you noted, whenever he was called out on those biased inaccuracies, he would fall behind the "we're just a comedy show" defense. He's more than willing to use his platform to promote his agenda...but completely unwilling to accept the responsibility and culpability he has in/for the messages that are spread from it. His show was clearly an attempt to influence the minds of a younger, less informed, generation. His show wasn't always like that. They used to lambaste everyone. Until he sold out to the 'us vs. them' mindset of the MSM...and that was that for impartiality. I lost a lot of respect for Jon over the years...although tbh, Trevor Noah is a whole lot worse.

I just can’t take Colbert seriously. I feel like he’s always in character, an annoying character at that. Jimmy Fallon is just NOT FUNNY. He’s never witty or clever.
