One very important thing to consider is that Conor does a lot of techniques that require a lot of big motions and drain a lot of energy. Spinning techniques for example are a huge drain on your stamina for a potentially high reward. Conor does a lot of these very draining techniques over the course of a match because he wants to end fights early, which leads to him gassing faster than someone who fights more conservatively.

Low v02 max is not the same as what he was describing, though both your statements are true. V02 max can be trained; whereas, the type of muscle fibres you have and the insertion points of your muscle tendons are genetic. This wouldn't predispose Conor to having a significantly lower V02 max than any other fighter though. In theory, the guy's answer sounds interesting as to why Conor would gas out in a fight, but lower V02 max than Diaz let's say and/or his fighting style at the start of the fight being more aggressive would be greater factors as to why his oxygen deficit spikes initially in fights (due to exertion with quick knock out mindset as they described) and is unable to be recovered well in the later rounds (due to possible lower V02 max). The two things the guy mentions are valid talking points as to why Conor may have the edge in striking power; however, these alone would not suggest Conor would not be able to improve his late game stamina. With training, of course anything can be improved, sometimes at the cost of other abilities. This may be the case with improved V02 at the cost of striking power, but it certainly would not handicap him more than it could improve his fighting, i.e. spending more time with conditioning and increasing his V02 max. On the contrary, because of his genetic make up for striking power and quick knock outs, had he been focusing more on v02, maybe he would have had less time to maximize his striking potential and not seen as many first round wins. More than likely he had never had to train his endurance as much as other athletes due to these two differences in muscle genetics. As others have begun to find ways to defend against his knock out power (I don't really follow UFC so I refer to the Mayweather fight), Conor will certainly have to train himself to maximize his striking power throughout the later rounds. I just don't see it as an impossibility due to his genetics!

Dominic Cruz has come back from a long multiple year layoff and won the title. If Conor had gotten a turn tuneup fight, would the outcome have been any different. If Conor had an extra fight to warm up, and wasnt allowed to blatantly grab Khabibs shorts for dear life, the inside of his his gloves, the cage, knee illegally from the bottom, etc. What would have changed if Herb Dean wasn't on crack that night?

Fun fact all of your skeletal muscles have some ratio of fast twitch to slow twitch muscle fibers. The type of training you do will determine the recruitment of those fibers so you can actually train to change that ratio and make any muscle to be fast twitch dominant. Explosive high intensity type of movements tend to recruit more fast twitch muscle fibers
@dee-taylor Жыл бұрын
Response from the future: Some are genetically predisposed to be one or the other by a wide margin. Sure, you can train explosiveness and endurance, but some people are naturally explosive without training a day and others have endurance without cultivating it. Those people are freaks and I've encountered them many times playing football, wrestling and later grappling.

Fast twitch fibers easily fatigue quickly as they use the glycolytic pathway that builds up lactic acidosis. Slow twitch fibers are more red in color and are loaded with myoglobin. These fibers don’t get fatigued. Your diaphragm for instance are 55% slow twitch fibers which is why you don’t get fatigued while you are normally breathing. I completely agree the Conor probably is loaded with fast twitch fibers.

Other than doing a muscle biopsy, I’m not aware of any real way to tell how many fast twitch fibers make up your skeletal muscle. I know that your diaphragm makes up around 55% slow twitch fibers which makes it resistant to fatigue. Same goes for the muscles in your hips are made up of a large amount of slow twitch fibers so you can stand for large periods of time without fatigue.

foxybrown2 I’m a nurse anesthetist student that has studied anatomy vastly. What are your credentials to say that this isn’t true? What did I say that wasn’t true? I want to add that the third most important factor to power is the mechanics of your strike. Different technique will leverage different muscles to produce power, certain muscles will be used less or more depending on how you do the move. So, if you want to strike like a specific fighter, you have to imitate their posture somewhat and engage your muscles the same way they do.

At 1:50 he nails it. I believe that this is true, whether it's a light guy like Bruce Lee, or someone heavier. Those people understand their own body and abilities and know when they can strike with authority. They also know when to avoid circumstances when they are not in authority. This is the mental aspect of fighting - knowing one's own strengths and weaknesses. It is truly an art. And this requires a very smart individual who has that "vision". The best fighters are very high-IQ people with that special vision.

I know what he's saying sounds good but I'm not 100% sold. Manny Pacquiao has never gassed out in a fight, and homeboy has fast twitch muscle like no other. Sure genetics plays to some factor, but I think what a fighter or his camp chooses to focus on during training determines that too. #1 the Diaz brothers are tri-atheletes. Whereas they could focus a big chunk of their time to weight lifting for power, they train marathon style hence the amazing cardio. #2 Mike Tyson while possessing massive power and fast twitch muscle, was also asthmatic. Which is why he trained and approached to finish fights early. #3 Connor gasses out simply because cardio is probably on the bottom of the list of his training focus. I'm not saying genetics dont play some role, I'm saying dont ignore what the fighter or his camp chooses to prioritize during training.

😂😂😂 you're right. I don't buy a word of what he said. Conor's fighting style is exhausting. 1. Super active kicking game. Bicycle kick, spinning kick etc. to put pressure, push opponents to the cage and make Conor counter their right with his left. 2. Not to mention how much force he puts into his left counter. He looks to end the fight, not to get into striking exchanges.

its all that but also how relaxed the fighter is- floyd and manny - they never got tired- they have been doin it since they were toddlers- theyre comfortable in there with their energy consumption. conor expends ALOT of energy quckly- and explosively, screaming - throwing power shtos- trying to end it quickly

Mayweather exposed McGregor two ways: 1. His power is not that powerful. He caught Floyd a couple of times, but he didn't rock him. I think technique matters as well though. In the Diaz vs Connor fight for example I didn't see Diaz throw a single powerpunch with great power technique. All they were was arm punches, he didn't put his body weight into them or rotated his torso for full effect. Even if he does that it doesn't mean that he will have the touch of death but he would have a way easier time knocking people out.

I remember a guy wrote a book about 20 years plus ago that had Taboo in the title. It was about genetics. European Caucasians have the strongest upper body strength. People of East African descent, like Kenya abd Ethiopa, have a high content slow twitch muscle fibers making them the best diistance runners whereas those if West African descent have mostly fast twitch muscle fiber content making them the best sprinters! Genetics are EVERYTHING!
@Axe_Slinger4 жыл бұрын
@Grannvale Flame Emperor So you likely have more fast twitch muscles then slow twitch. Like the African genetics were explained in the book. East Africans have mostly slow twitch so they always dominate Marathons but you will likely never see a Kenyan or Ethiopan who is a top notch sprinter. Then again the best sprinters are West African, from memory I can't name the countries like I know Marathon runners, you will likely never see a top notch West African Marathoner. I'll see if I can find the name of the book. I never read it but I heard a 1 hour interview with the author when the book came out some 20-odd years ago. Also as I said about Northern and Eastern Caucasians are much stronger then Blacks GENERALLY are, I mean Mark Henry is an exception. Most power lifters and World's Strongest Man winners are Scandanavian, Icelandic, or Slavic (Russia, Ukraine, Poland etc.)! I honestly don't ever remember a black man ever winning World's Strongest Man and I've followed it for about 35 years!
@Axe_Slinger4 жыл бұрын
@Grannvale Flame Emperor The book is called "Taboo: Why black athletes dominate sports and why we're afraid to talk about it...." Written by John Entine in 2000. While Africa is the mother-lode of the running world, talent is not evenly distributed across the continent but is concentrated in three areas: a swath of western African coastal states, notably Senegal, Nigeria, and Cameroon, extending south to Namibia; the northern African countries of Algeria and Morocco; and a long stretch of eastern African states from Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Kenya to mountainous South Africa. However, there are a range of structural traits shared by genetically-diverse African athletes: low body fat, longer legs in comparison to the rest of their bodies, and narrow hips. Although sub-Saharan Africans share many characteristics, different environments also have left distinctive evolutionary footprints. Athletes who trace their ancestry to western Africa, which has been geographically, and genetically, somewhat isolated from the north (by the harsh desert climate) and the east (by the Great Rift Valley) - are the world's premier speedsters and jumpers. Studies have shown that athletes of West African origin hit a biomechanical wall after about 45 seconds of intense, anaerobic activity (distances longer than 400-meters in sprinting and all measurable distances in swimming, in which Africans are believed to be genetically disadvantage on average) when aerobic skills come into play. Such absolute domination is even more remarkable considering that African athletes have clearly had less access to the latest in sports medicine, technology, coaching, and opportunity. Yet it is indisputable that the highest level of athleticism among males athletes is disproportionately linked to Africa. For all practical reality, men's world championship events might as well post a sign declaring, "whites need not apply." Remember the last time a non-black set the men's world record in the 100-meter sprint? One has to go back to 1960, when German Armin Hary won the Olympic gold medal in 10.2 seconds. The best time by a white 100-meter runner is 10 seconds, which ranks well below two hundred on the all-time list. There are also no sprinters of note from Asia, which has more than 55 percent of the world's population, even with the Confucian and Tao traditions of discipline and an authoritarian sports system in the most populous country, China. Relative advantages in these physiological and biomechanical characteristics are a gold mine for athletes who compete in such anaerobic activities as football, basketball, and sprinting, sports in which West African blacks clearly excel. However, they also pose problems for athletes who might want to compete as swimmers (heavier skeletons and smaller chest cavities could be drags on performance) or in cold-weather and endurance sports. Central West African athletes are more susceptible to fatigue than whites and East Africans, in effect making them relatively poor candidates for aerobic sports. White athletes appear to have a physique between central West Africans and East Africans. They have more endurance but less explosive running and jumping ability than West Africans; they tend to be quicker than East Africans but have less endurance. Today, blacks of West African ancestry monopolize the 100 meter distance. They are quicker out of the starting blocks and demonstrate blazing speed. Former "world's fastest human" Donovan Bailey clocked a mind-bending 27 miles per hour at the mid-point of his record-breaking sprint at the Atlanta Olympics. Dozens of blacks have cracked the 10-second barrier. While blacks of West African ancestry hold the fastest two hundred 100-meter times, all under 10 seconds (which no white, Asian or East African has ever broken) they are hapless at longer distances that demand endurance. All of the thirty-two finalists in the last four Olympic men's 100-meter races are of West African descent. The likelihood of that based on population numbers alone-blacks with ancestral roots in that region represent 8 percent of the world's population - is 0.0000000000000000000000000000000001 percent. There have been a small handful of non-West African 200- and 400-meter runners over the years. In 1979 Italy's Pietro Mennea shattered the 200-meter record running 19.72 seconds, still the best time by a non-African. Although he ran in Mexico City's 7,300 foot altitude and was aided by a tailwind of 90 percent of the allowable limit, Mennea's moment-in-the-sun is invoked as "proof" that whites can run as fast as blacks. Mennea's record held for seventeen years before being pulverized in 1996 by Michael Johnson in a stunning 19.32, an improvement of more than 2 percent, an unheard of breakthrough in sprinting. Intriguingly, Mennea traces part of his own ancestry to Africa. Many southern Europeans, who are disproportionately stand-outs in running, trace a significant percentage of their genes to Africa as a result of interbreeding Whether or not genes confer a competitive advantage on blacks when it comes to stealing bases, running with the football, shooting hoops, or jumping hurdles remains the $64,000 question. Since the first known study of differences between blacks and white athletes in 1928, the data have been remarkably consistent: in most sports, African-descended athletes have the capacity to do better with their raw skills than whites. Blacks with a West African ancestry generally have: relatively less subcutaneous fat on arms and legs and proportionately more lean body and muscle mass, broader shoulders, larger quadriceps, and bigger, more developed musculature in general; denser, shallower chests; higher center of gravity, generally shorter sitting height, narrower hips, and lighter calves; longer arm span and "distal elongation of segments" - the hand is relatively longer than the forearm, which in turn is relatively longer than the upper arm; the foot is relatively longer than the tibia (leg), which is relatively longer than the thigh; faster patellar tendon reflex; greater body density, which is likely due to higher bone mineral density and heavier bone mass at all stages in life, including infancy (despite evidence of lower calcium intake and a higher prevalence of lactose intolerance, which prevents consumption of dairy products); modestly, but significantly, higher levels of plasma testosterone (3-19 percent), which is anabolic, theoretically contributing to greater muscle mass, lower fat, and the ability to perform at a higher level of intensity with quicker recovery; a higher percentage of fast-twitch muscles and more anaerobic enzymes, which can translate into more explosive energy.

@richard julien I'm wondering what a few of examples are! You still see sub-saharsm dominate distance races and although it's been 20 years since the book was published but when you see that west african descendants had the 200+ fastest 100m dash times. Also, as I spoke about whites, especially Slavs, Brian Shaw, and Scandinavians dominate World's Strongest Man competitions! There will always be some outliers! Think of Federer, Djokovic, Cristiano, Messi, Canelo, Golovkin, Lomachenko, Usyk, Fury, Miocic, then expand that to other disciplines dominated by whites, ice hockey, swimming, world's strongest men, rowing, crossfit etc... The list is endless. It takes more than slight genetic variables to class a race as more athletic. It takes time, hard work, dedication, knowledge, discipline, mental acuity, intelligence... It sounds like this book was written by someone who loves the African race, or despises his own, depending on where they are from.

Before that he could throw volumes of punches even into 2nd and the 3rd rounds. Either the larger weight has sapped his tank, or he's off some form of Ped's. Alot of these guys beat the system just like lance armstrong did for years, until these last 3-4 years when the testing became even better, and catching all the guys we thought were legit.
