This song reminds me about my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there is some pain, I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes, I will miss you to the core! but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people. This song actually makes me cry! I was only 9 & knew most of the lyrics to this song, I didn't know what it meant back then, when I finally understood what this song is abt it made me realize that ppl are cruel & narcissistic, I already knew that but it really sank in when I was 24 & getting divorced, I didn't know anything at that tender age & had 2 children, this song helped me to get through a very difficult time in my life. I know a couple who have been together 29 going through the same thing he's singing abt in this song. I adore Mr Joe South's music, lyrics & the down-to-earth type of person he was. This is my fav song by him & my 2nd fav song is Walk A Mile In My Shoes. He wrote alot of music that he didn't get credit for! When Loretta Lynn first sang I Never Promised You A Rose Garden ppl raved, they went crazy, Joe South wrote that song. Hush, a song that Deep Purple sang & even put it on one of their albums was written by Joe South, there is alot he didn't get credit for & many, many ppl today don't even know who the original artist or lyrics were written when Johnny Cash sang his song, Elvis, there are alot of others he wrote music for. Some do say that Joe South wrote a song for their band but for others who sang his songs w/o acknowledging him.

Back in the 1970’s I watched on TV this song in the country of birth and I was amazed about how perfectly Joe South described people back then, Today in live in USA and we “the people” can be described much worse than before in this beautiful song lyrics…Thank you

It's so lovely go back in time to my childhood days of hearing music on the radio airwaves. And now it's a whole new world of music on our phone in the palms of our hands.

My dad's band played this song back in the 70's when I was a little kid. Such memories! I just had a friend send it to me--and he is only 32 in 2024--so it's not just boomers who are listening; the young ones are finding it too. Great art never expires.

Woah! I still have this single. I'd forgotten about Joe. In retrospect his tune defined my youth. It is such a melancholic song.
