Part 8: • Joe Torry on 2Pac Gett...
Part 10: • Joe Torry on Unknown 2...
Part 1: • Joe Torry on Getting A...
--------
In this clip, Joe Torry shares what it was like to film the cult classic "Poetic Justice" back in the early nineties. He praises the great Janet Jackson for her professionalism, off-camera, before mentioning 2Pac's exploits with female admirers. The actor revealed that female fans interacted with 2Pac so often that the producers eventually insisted on an Aids test just to make sure that their investment in Janet was protected. As the Q&A session moves along, he reveals that he had a crush on Janet, while they were filming just like John Singleton and 2Pac did. He also revisits an incident where they all nearly died when 2Pac was driving them in the Jeep Cherokee that he received as a birthday gift. Elsewhere in the interview, he details clashing with 2Pac over his tardiness on set, ad-libbing in the film, coordinating his fight scene and the cast being visited by Oprah on set.

He’s right about the paranoia around HIV at the time. That film came out in 1992. Magic Johnson’s announcement was barely a year before. And Joe is being nice about it, but he’s basically saying Tupac was reckless with women on the set. So yeah, you can’t blame her.

I am so glad Joe Torry told exactly what it was. That was around the time you was hearing about hiv/aids on the news but nobody knew a whole lot about how you got it. I remember this first guy I heard had it, when I was a kid and he was in his 20’s, and considered a ladies man because he dated so many girls. He ended up in the hospital with it. His parents didn’t understand it but he died quickly. At that time, you heard about a lot of rappers being with a lot of women. Thank God times have changed and there are better medicines now until God sends complete healing. That’s why it’s so important people, not to sound preachy but make sure you’re getting yourself tested. Nothing to be afraid of. They have better medicines out here now. During that time, people were dropping like flies but now it’s so much better. So don’t be fearful about testing and make sure you’re being careful. Not fair to the other person you may be dealing with.

I really enjoyed this interview. As someone who's favorite movie has always been Poetic Justice, and who's favorite rapper has always been 2Pac, this is why it's so important to hear different perspectives of a story. Of course it's human nature to spin a story in our favor, so I'm glad that Joe Torry was able to paint a different picture in terms of Janet's professionalism and some of the scenes of the movie. Definitely need to go back and watch this movie again, looking at it from a new angle!

If you 30 and below you probably don't understand the magnitude of how Janet Jackson was IT in the early 90s. I figure it's the same way I can't appreciate Pam Grier to the fullest extent because I wasn't born until '86. Who is this generations IT woman? 🤔
