The reason Joe is so damn good is a combination of several things, I think. A lot of his best stuff involves simple and well-forecasted punchlines, ones that wouldn't be much on their own. But he delivers them while never cracking from the character of a sedate, low-tempo, but extremely unpleasant man. The joining of some extremely wacky prop comedy with a guy who only ever expends any energy at all if it's to be rude just hits SO WELL. And the secret third ingredient is that it's clear by the way the people he works with react to him that there is no way in hell that he is anything other than a lovely and wonderful guy when off-camera. So you can't help but be impressed by the skill it takes to portray this sleepy horrible gremlin of a man so well. And then, THEN, when he has lured you into expectations, he hits you with entirely different punchlines anyway. Several broken wine bottles in and suddenly; "there's nothing in that one." Absolute legend.

It's the same thing that made Sean so brilliant. Seemingly working class but with very well crafted, intelligent routines. Punchlines work best when they're unexpected and that is what Sean and Joe do. They take you by surprise.

I’ve watched this clip a few times and wondered why Vic and Bob react the way they do. It hit me the other day while watching a clip of the Shooting Stars reboot - Joe’s character is very similar to Angelos Epithemiou and I think they are pissed off because they think Joe has ripped it off. Could be wrong but it’s odd that they are the only two not laughing, so I’m sure it’s that

Yeah I think you've hit the nail on the head. A lot of people seem to think it's because they're jealous, but you can see them trying to stifle their laughs a few times. I think they're just trying to show their friend that they're on his side.

Speculating obviously but I think it might be because their brand of comedy is similar, so they have a greater understanding of the nuts and bolts that go into a bit like that, and that takes some of the funniness out. "I can see why this is funny, but I'm not finding it funny", sort of thing.
