One of the most helpful equipment videos by far on KZbin. Thanks a lot for ideas like the Gaffa-pen or to backup JPEGs on the second memory card and leave it in the camera the whole trip.

Hi Joe! Thank you for the video. I share your frustration of finding the perfect camera bag. Especially if you are a traveller. Being that the backbag manufacturers have been able to build adjustable carrying systems that don´t paralyze the user I couldn´t for the life of me figure out how the camerabag maunfacturers just couldn´t learn from them. Went through a few bags myself before I found the F-Stop bags. Have you tried them? I find them really cool because of their ICU-system that lets you put more or less units in your bag depending on the amount of gear you need. So if are only on a daytrip, you just put one unit in and leave the rest of the units at hotel/motel/bnb. Also, when flying, you just take the unit out. But you only need one bag. I´m using the Tilopa model myself and I highly recommend it.
@joeallam8 жыл бұрын
I've not seen or used the F-Stop bags in person, but I've been linked to them before. I see they're functionally looking pretty good, but I just really don't like the styling of the bag, so I'd refrain a bit from going for it if I'm honest. I've recently picked up the Lowepro ProTactic 450 which holds a huge amount of stuff and is really well formed, plus it looks pretty slick. Let's hope it works out well for me!

With up to 4lbs on it, BeFree Carbon is amazing. I put an apron on it and put some of contents of camera bag on that to achieve greater stability when needed. Doing so in winds up to 20mph with 30mph gusts I've taken video and long-exposure photos without noticable shake. And man how amazing is that peak design capture pro!? It's all about being ready to capture the moment sometimes!! I've hiked 20+ miles on rough trails including scrambling on rockwith a 4 lb body + lens and been super happy w an extra backpack strap to hold down the long/heavy lens barrel on a long lens.

A great bag (I don't have one but I've watched countless reviews and I'm a massive fan boy of it) is the Brevite Design bag. Nice video! Thanks! I also love the peak design capture pro clip. One question though. I have an older version of this backpack, and the shoulder strap are heavily padded and super thick, which leaves little screw depth for the clip's two plates. I had quite a lot of trouble to keep the two plates securely screwed given the thick shoulder strap in between. Did you run into the same problem?
@camrondixon28608 жыл бұрын
I just went on an Everest Base Camp trek and the pro capture clip was my favourite photography accessory! I can't recommend it more, and it never fell out. I also have it high enough on my backpack that I can put my camera strap around my neck without it pulling on me, but if it does fall, my neck will just catch it! Great video mate, if you're ever in Brisbane and want to see some of the sites hit me up!

+Joe Allam I am thankful for your work as a huge inspiration for my own. I am still in school, I am photographing and filming since one year now an it's my passion and your work and and your likable type of presenting your work have a big influence on my own work. Can't say that enough thanks for that !! :-) I am planning to do a bit more filming for KZbin (your videos encouraged me to do this and Casey Neistat, but his encouragement does not stand for discussion haha). An hour ago I asked myself what would be your opinien on a 'daily (or every two days something like this) vlog week(a week or longer)' while you are on your trip or maybe when you arrived at Australia.
@joeallam8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Mehdi! Good luck with the new filming, I hope it works out well for you! I actually considered trying out daily vlogging back in June, as a preparation to going travelling, but then I just had too much ambition for each video that I wouldn't be fast enough on my edits. I then considered starting daily vlogs from January onwards, but my trip to Florida taught me that I would most likely struggle with energy levels at the end of each day and wouldn't make as high a quality set of content that I would be able to make. I have the hugest respect for daily vloggers who can sustain themselves, but I do wonder what the longevity of work would be and how they would introduce new projects and ideas. Even now, I'm trying to get weekly videos out, but I'm also trying to better each and every video which keeps the editing time considerably long. I'm not sure how the future will plan out, but as you know I'm an advocate for always wanting to produce the best I can!

Joe, just a quick question if you've got a mo', please - the Gorillapod Focus, I'm very fond of the robust design and the concept but have you 'got your money's worth out of it' or have you found that lack of conveniently placed 'mounting objects' has limited your shooting options? I'm thinking of purchasing the Focus but am a little concerned that availability of 'mounting objects' will mean I'll wish I'd purchased a little travel tripod e.g. Manfrotto Befree, Befree One or one of the myriad of other travel tripods available. Crackin' work with these videos by the way - the camera bag info is proving to be particularly useful!! Thanks very much!!

Your videos are super helpful! The camera body that I have is a Canon 7D, and unfortunately the only lens that I have is a 50mm 1.4. My husband and I travel quite a lot and will be out for most of this next year. Do you have any tips for using a portrait lens like the 50mm to capture landscapes/streets?
@joeallam7 жыл бұрын
Ah, the nifty fifty! That used to be one of my favourite lenses before I got some L class glass. You'll definitely find it a bit trickier with your typical wide landscape shots, though I personally prefer to crop in tight to an image than go fully wide. You should maybe try and target towards the details of a scene, rather than trying to fit everything in. Use lack of distortion to your advantage and try to find framing that matches similar to what the human eye can see! As for street photography, you'll definitely feel comfortable using it as it gets you 'into' a scene, without being too obvious!

Hey Joe! Nice video. I didn't quite catch last bit on travel gear on the plane? How are you traveling with your other gear, ie. clothes, etc.? I generally travel with a 45/55L backpack for clothes etc. ( 5 + mo). and similar camera equipment as you in a similar bag as the manfrotto- and I am still trying to find a better set up for when I am traveling/ carrying both bags, ie, on a local buses/ trains, etc. Primarily India so always mindful, How are you carrying stuff when in-country? One on front/ one on the back?
@joeallam7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I personally have my backpack for camera gear and then a rolling suitcase for clothing, chargers and other items. If I'm travelling in countries with less than adequate terrain, I switch to a hiking backpack and then wear the camera bag on the front. But in the past year, I've only opted for that once in the Philippines and it wasn't worth it haha

BlackRapid do make an attachment that would replace the screw fixing on the Manfrotto plate if you'd like the best of both worlds (amzn.to/1NRaF6N). The Capture Pro plate on my Sony fits into my Manfrotto tripod by the way, if that's any help?

Surprised you're not using the a7rii as your main stills camera given it's phenomenal sensor. Could I ask what case you had for your power bank charger thingy? Looking for one for mine. Cheers.

+Keith O'Keeffe Although the A7R II is a great stills camera and yes the sensor is phenomenal, I still can't switch to it being my full-time camera. It's simply not fast enough for me for a number of reasons. The write speed to even the fastest of memory cards is too slow with quite a small buffer due to the size of each individual photo (about 85mb 😧). Even after taking a single shot, I can't review it in playback until after about 1.5 seconds after which is really frustrating. It's simply not a camera geared towards fast paced shooting. The controls and size of the camera-not to mention the horrendous menu layouts-also make this a tricky camera to use fast. I find myself able to do pretty much every task faster and more naturally on my Canon than my Sony for photography, which is why I still use it. I feel like I've just completely slated the Sony here, but I really do love it. It's an incredible camera and does well if I'm taking things calmly for photography. It's also pretty much unbeatable (apart from the A7S...) in this form factor for video which is why it's my main video camera. The case on my battery pack actually came with the battery itself which is handy. It's the Techlink ReCharge (allam.co/2lis5)

Many thanks! Did you have a favourite product that was shown?

Of course I loved the bag itself and all your equipments. Anyway between the Canon G7X that your using and the Sony RX100 3 ,which one would u recommend for vloging. Need your honest opinion ? Thanks and continue your great work...From Nairobi.

I chose the G7 X over the Sony at the time because I felt the Canon was built much more solidly and had a better flip-up screen. The Sony's screen doesn't lie flat when flipped up which really bothers me. There is now a G7 X mark II which I have not used yet, and a potential Sony RX100 Mark V coming in the next few weeks.

Thanks! I'd never heard of that before now and I'm quite intrigued by it. I'll see if I can get a look at one somewhere.

It's probably the coolest bag ever!

Did you ever get a chance to check them out? They just released their new smaller bag on kickstarter.

Thanks for the heads up! I've still not seen one in person, though I am pretty happy with my current bag setup now. I've got an Incase EO Travel for my day/travel needs and then the Lowepro Protactic 450 for camera days...

I’m thinking of buying the DSLR Canon EOS 4000D & lense EF-S 18-135mm Should I? It’s going to be my first camera.
@kurtisgrant78365 жыл бұрын
I picked up a Canon T6i as my first camera. Canon tends to be a light weight camera great for walking around all day. I believe the 4000D would be a great first camera to find out if you would like to continue in photography without going broke. I have since moved on to the Canon 7D, a great camera.
