They didn't call the first century the 0th century, therefore, it's always been 1 ahead. Technically, you're living in the 21st century (2000-2099)...once the year 2100 has hit, than the 21st century is complete, and you begin the 22nd century. So although a "century" is a singular term, it's equal to 100 years..therefore applying the term "21st century" to this century makes it sound wrong, but when applying it to this current 100 year span, it makes sense.
