Nice piece of German history. Extremely rare outside Hungary, Poland and Croatia. East German people did not really want it as the wind of change blew their way in 1990.

What's interesting about the Wartburg 1.3 is that it actually had an EA111 engine by VW that the engineers somehow had to fit in in this car body which is almost the same like in the 60's. Very rare car nowadays, especially the station wagon (Tourist). My father still owns one. Good video, Joe!

My late grandfather had one exactly like this many years ago (except that it had the gear shift lever on the steering column and a fluffy, orange upholstery 😊) and he used to drove my grandmother and I to the village grandmother's kin! Such lovely memories from when I was only a small child! Greatings from Romania!

My father used to have a 1.3 in "every metal door in industrial areas is painted this color" blue, before that he had a 353 that he used to race Ladas with and often ended up winning, because the 353 accelerated better than the Ladas, if the distance was longer the Ladas overtook him. He modified the 1.3 to have a push ignition.. because the cylinder broke and turning it to the starting position did nothing, so he wired up a button that worked as a replacement, put the cylinder into the second position and then the button worked. He bought a Suzuki Ignis sometime after 2010 and the used car dealership accepted the Wartburg for trade in and sold the Wartburg not even a month after that.

In this model, there was only the four stroke engine with 58HP. But the predecessors all had two stroke engines.

Dali neko može povjerovati. -na vartburgu i prikolici 🎉25km daleko na jedamput dovezao sirove jelove fosne za letve. Za krovi kuće 10×11 m. A ISTINA ŽIVA ja dovezao. A da ne pričam sav kamen za temelje u autu vozio. I sam se pitam dal sam bio luđi ja ili vartburg.

Fuel gauge - uses a series of LEDs rather than a needle. Similar design to the "econometer" used in some Trabants, where the coloured LEDs would light according to how heavy you are on the throttle.

@@kidjay2679 They completely stopped production in 1991 as both the overall concept of the car and the manufacturing facilities were very outdated and no one in Germany really wanted this car by then (introduction of the West German Mark in the former GDR meant prices for these things went up quite badly and people there were rather keen on used Western cars). I think the plant was sold to GM and Opel vehicles are produced there.
