I mean JRB can get staked. Berkley has a $20 million backing deal. You dont think ivey could get backing deal for $10 million+ from a billionaire who is a fan of poker. He is one of the best poker players ever. Of course he can. Who cares if he is broke. He chooses to play less poker. He could play the highest stakesevery day if he wanted to.

I’ve been in recovery for 13yrs and Definitely what I believe after watching his last three podcast interviews. I was wondering why he never said anything until he said he was going to talk about it in another interview, in this podcast. Anyone who plays poker has at least some slight obsessive compulsive disorder which goes hand in hand with addiction. A lot of people in poker could benefit from his openness about recovery, but then again, it’s his choice. He might not want to put that weight on his shoulders and is understandable also. I was already a huge fan but now I’m an even bigger fan! The recovery family runs deep!

@billj4525
@billj4525 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, he was struggling with alcohol for a while, and had been losing a lot of money because of bad decisions at the time because of it. He started playing really well and started getting good results again not much longer after he cleaned up too. I have no idea if it he needed 12 step or wanted to go to any kind of rehab though. Possible I guess. Glad that Ivey was man enough to talk about his problems. Like he said these issues are all over poker. I mean Stu Ungar, who was a super genius and one of the GOAT poker players was an extremely bad drug addict most of his life, also a very bad gambling addict. Most poker players expected him to die pretty much every year considering how bad his health was and what he was doing to himself. He lived a lot longer than most thought he would though. He overdosed on cocaine in 1990 while having an overwhelming chip lead over 2nd place with 25 players left. and he almost died. It was bad enough to where he never was able to return to the table and he got blinded off into 9th place. Not long after he came back and won the 97 main event after not playing seriously for a long time and being in a drug induced haze. He was absolutely destroying everyone, and watching him and his skills while playing against the others was just unbelievable. He won a million dollars I believe. Not long very long after that, sometime in early to mid 98 he was found dead in a drug infested motel with drugs all over the room. A very very sad ending to one of the GOAT poker players. He was young, and only made it to 45, but considering the drug abuse, most thought he would have died a long time before. Stuey had many sad situations in his life. I have a lot of empathy for many of Stueys choices in life. He had tried to clean up for his family and daughter, but unfortunately drugs would always end up getting the better of him, and he ultimately lost his battle to drugs at 45. Sorry this was so long, but like I said there is a lot of this in poker. Stueys situation is obviously very extreme.
@billj4525
@billj4525 10 ай бұрын
@@EverDayBest I know alcohol specifically messed Ivey up a lot, which is why he stopped drinking. I had heard that many times about Ivey. Matusow talked about Iveys drinking problems and how it ruined his results, but he also said since Ivey stopped alcohol that he started to have great results again. I hadn't heard about drugs with Ivey. Yeah, the emotional stuff with woman and the heavy drinking went hand in hand as they many times do. They both feed off each other in many cases. People will drink because of the emotional stuff with women, and that causes arguments and fights, which then causes more drinking. So they feed off each other. I have seen others with that same problem.

Legendary podcast. Phil is the man. During the last WSOP I was standing in line to turn in my winner slip and seen him sitting in a chair off to the side. The guy in front of me was wearing a suit and told the cashier he was buying Phil into the Players Championship 50k tourney. The guy worked for Caesars and stood in line so Phil didn't have to, lol. Phil had his headphones on and was jus chilling playing an online cash game on his phone. I wanted to go say hi but when I heard he was getting ready to play the 50k Players I knew he was zoning in and prolly didn't wana be bothered. Was so incredible jus to see him irl tho. Thanks for this Podcast Joey and Phil. Was really awesome

This is a really enjoyable and revealing interview. They say don't meet your idols as they will be a disappointment, but this interview flowed so well, which was far from guaranteed as Ivey isn't really interested in the publicity side of poker. There was some gossip a while back that Ivey was having some unnamed problems off the table, and I have no idea if that is true, maybe there was drink, drugs, mental problems, money problems, maybe no problems at all. But it is clear he has taken a step back and is focussed on having a simple, clear life. And it is good that he is in a place in life where he can share that update on where he is at. Daniel Colman is a player who was not interested in interviews, but was really engaging in a recent interview of his I saw, and I wished he had been more keen to talk publicly. Ivey is also really enjoyable to listen to, and I hope he starts to enjoy interviews more. Maybe it is a case of him making sure he is interviewed by genuinely interested, knowledgeable interviewees like Joey, rather than silly interviewers who dont really know what they are talking about, or are just looking for silly attention seeking angles. Well done Joey, you really made the most of the opportunity to do this interview. And thanks to Ivey for talking publicly like this.

@@funniestshit2984 Alcohol problems was one of his issues. Matusow had mentioned on his podcast that Phil was struggling with booze for a while, and Phil confirmed it here, but he didn't give details. He was man enough to admit that he needed a much needed break. Most people are afraid to admit that, especially people with some fame. Rumors about drug problems too, but that I don't know, and that is nothing he has ever addressed. He definitely had some gambling issues that were made worse by alcohol. Mike said Phil was losing a lot because of drinking, but that once Phil stopped drinking that his poker results started getting incredible again. Phil also works out , meditates, and does many healthy things as a result of this issue as well. He had issues with his wife as well. I don't think he will ever explain all these issues in any detail either, but I think he has addressed some of them at least, which is great.

Seen a LOT of Phil Ivey interviews over the years.. I don't know if it's just me, but this particular one seems super genuine in comparison to the norm- v open, seemingly honest and tbh kinda vulnerable at times. It's absolutely refreshing and valuable and I just wanna say thank you for making this happen and uploading it for us. I've been playing professionally for some time and it's super useful to hear the input of people like this, and I've no doubt it will be even more valuable for the hundreds of new up and coming players.. good work as the interviewer.. thanks Joey!

@@christianburk7309 Well he basically says he had problems with alcohol in his life for sure. Glad he's sober and doing a lot better. He didn't necessarily use AA though. AA has good principals sure, and Ivey could definitely be mentioning those concepts because they help him. I don't think that he means he goes to meetings though. I mean it's possible.

Yeah, a lot of people are afraid or embarrassed to tell others about their struggle and issues with alcohol and or drugs, especially once they have a certain level of fame. Ivey may have left out details of his alcohol problems, but he was honest for the most part, which can potentially help others struggling too, which was a good point by Joey. It also made Ivey take a look at his life and make many positive improvements. Sounds like he's exercising and doing meditation during this time as well, which are two very very healthy and important activities in my opinion. I hope Ivey is still clean, and still focused on these positive life aspects. Keep up the good work Phil, you're a beast.

Hell yeah, people make mistakes, and Ivey is man enough to talk about his problems with alcohol and other things. Joey is right when he said Ivey mentioning his struggles might help others put down the alcohol too who are also struggling. Most people don't want to talk about these things publicly, especially when they're famous. His poker results started improving a lot once he got that under control as well. He's also meditating and exercising every day too. All this is very very positive stuff, and i'm glad Phil is doing so well lately.
