Nice job, very interesting! Just wondering about the graveyard where Joel Lane, other members of the Lane family and many of the town's citizens were interred. It use to lie a few feet east of Boylan Ave. and about 35 yds south of Morgan Street according to the book, "Joel Lane, Pioneer and Patriot", by Marshall D Haywood (1900) pgs 26-27. It says that after Joel Lane's death, his son Thomas sold the residence and land to Dr. Gilchrist (who married Lane's daughter) on Dec 31 1808. It was later sold to Peter Browne and then in 1818 to William Boylan. When Peter Browne owned it, he thought the bury ground was an unprofitable piece of property so he had it plowed up and planted cabbages! Is this really true? The book also said that Browne is buried in an old graveyard about a mile and a half east of Boylan Ave on Morgan Street. Does this graveyard still exist? There's no mention of Browne moving any visible burials to another burial site. Sad to think there is a restaurant covering the spot where Joel Lane and others may still be buried. This could be a worthwhile adventure for a history seeker! Who knows what you'll uncover in the old county records! You can find the forenamed book online.
